Fruity Water Gate

This project is completely apolitical. It IS literally a gate of water. This project goes by the name of “Water Shade” and keeps a shield of H2O around the fruit it is sworn to protect. It’s both a dish and a cover, working with water to keep freshness in and everything larger than Oxygen OUT! Designer Yitu Wang doesn’t want to keep you from your delicious apples though, so there’s a built in detector that sees your hand in approach, and thus is does desist.

Moisture is locked in. Freshness is locked in. Flies are locked out. Dust is locked out. And when you come up and decide you’d love to have a strawberry, as soon as your hand gets near, the streams in that area stop. You’ll remain dry. How very keen!

It told you. It keeps the moisture in, the freshness in, dust out, and flies out.

I don't really know anything about this other what it describes in the diagrams. After reading a few of the comments though I see a lot of people claiming that this thing is a waste and is pretty much stupid. WELL IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO REPLACE A GLASS LID!! It's just something different, unique, unusual, interesting, cool, and something that none of your friends will have so THAT'S why you would get one! People need to lighten up and appreciate art.

    • Debussine says:

It's aesthetically pleasing, but -not- art. There is a difference.

      • Hadden says:

I would say that’s art! Water sculpture that is also functional! How creative! Would love to have one!

This is plain stupid. Have you considered the water splashes when you turn off and on? Messy table you will have.
Do you know a constant wet fruit can make them rotten faster?
Do you know that only low temperature can keep the fruit fresh longer?
I bet you don't know this..

i think this is a great concept, but there are many factors that have to be taken into consideration. i wont judge, but i would like to see this as more than a 3D model

Brilliant idea and to the people with "not enough" attitude – do it yourself man!

Make something better – put something incredible on the table and stop complaining.

    Respect!

I don't know about you, but a fruitbowl is a perfectly adequate storage space for my fruit. Unless I've left it there for months it doesn't get mouldy, or covered in dirt or insects, and I usually eat my fruit pretty soon after I buy it. So everything this is designed to do is actually pretty pointless.

  • satisfEYEd says:

water will splash all over the place. The power and pump could fluctuate at all or the water stream will over or undershoot the catchment well. Not very “green” to use energy to run when a simplt net would do. Other than the hip[ gimmick factor, good design is usually the simplest.

  • This is such an awesome design. It should be used in some sci-fi books/movies. However, I agree with satisfEYEd. The water will spit and splash all over the place which would make a mess.

Are you going to be keeping the device outside? In the heat? Are you going to keep the heater on inside? True the water will eventually evaporate; however, if the device is inside the house, while the air conditioner is on, it would not only evaporate slowly you would also be around at some point in time to refill it.

Why are there SO MANY obnoxious comments repeating THE EXACT SAME THING.

On a separate note, I think this design is super cool, and has a lot of potential (centerpieces at parties like someone mentioned earlier?). The design is definitely not perfect and needs to be refined, but props to the designer for a good start! 🙂

who cares if it has a few flaws in it, do you think the cell phone, the radio, the computer was perfect when designed? what about the battery, or the lightbulb? even something as simple as a fork! keep going with this! try and make this work! if it happpens i can guarentee you there is one person right here who will buy one!

  • zeqojyft says:

    Nevermind that
A- Most fruits have an accelerated rate of decomposition in the presence of moisture, and naturally the humidity inside a water curtain would be high
B- The design doesn’t seem to account for the fact that water won’t fall in a perfect shape, it will naturally splash a good bit unless the outer ‘moat’ area is much wider, meaning the thing will take up more counter space
C- I see no filtration unit on that counter sculpture, and even if there was one it’d quickly get used up with water pumping continuously through it, not to mention that it would make difficulties with water pressure. But with no filtration unit, you’re having dirty fountain water all around your produce, which will get full of bacteria and mold spores. And again since you’ll have a lot of that water building up inside the dome in humidity, you’ll have all that stuff actually held in close contact with the food, instead of kept out as you’d hope.

It’s a cute design for a fountain, but it’s just a terrible idea for this application. The designer may as well just abandon marketing it for food preservation, and sell it for what it is.

I would totally buy one of those only really big so it would go around my house that opens to a retina scan and use holy water to keep the vampires out.

  • Darvocet says:

I’ve carefully read over all the comments, arguments and general stupidity and futility. My simple response to all of this: Screw it! This thing looks cool. Who cares if it works? I’d buy one just to own it. It’s a neat conversation piece to say the least.

  • hgp says:

Nice looking design but it wouldn’t work.
Water doesn’t behave in such a controlled manner. There would be splash droplets both inside (on the food) and outside (on the table). I work with water fountains all the time so I know the water would evaporate and moving water accelerates the process. I suspect a glass dome lid would be more effective and practical but I appreciate the idea.

  • jillian says:

It is better because ethene escapes. If you could get the water figured out it would prevent fruit, especially bananas from over ripening. We have bad fruit flies here but if we enclose bananas they last about a day.

    A waste of water!!!
