Open Debate: What Should This Mac Book Mini Hold?

Everybody has an opinion and at YD we encourage it. However this time around I want to do things differently. I came across these renders for a Mac Book Mini by Isamu Sanada (he is a devoted Apple freak). Prod as I did, he didn’t have any suggestions or ideas on what exactly this book should hold. Except for the fact that it has a very convenient sliding track pad, the design gives away nothing. Heck we are a design site so lets get some ideas from you erudite guys.

Lets deliberate/debate and see how we can make this Notebook the ultimate Apple Book…. just for fun! Are you guys with me?

Leave your ideas, opinions in the comments.

The best render I’ve ever seen. It’s better than any Mac out there–I can’t think of anything I’d change, except the color.

  • jason says:

Terrible. That trackpad is a flimsy mess.

  • Lu says:

The idea of the trackpad is excellent ! It would be perfect if a pen tablet.
But I find the shape a little too ressembling to my Dell XPS… It doesn’t really look like a machintoch to me.

  • Shuji Miyamoto says:

The shape looks exactly like the Sony P Series.

  • nishita gill says:

    graphic tablet….

    • Noah says:

That’s it! That would work well, also it could have a sketchbook program (it takes a picture of something and puts it on the screen for you to draw on).

  • VoReason says:

I should hold Windows XP or Ubuntu (you know, an OS that actually works)’_~

  • Kidder says:

The problem with ultra-slim laptops is that they have to sacrifice quite heavily on the hardware. Whilst the screen can be good (Sony have some fantastic quality screens on their ultra-slim laptop models), you always have to sacrifice in the rest of the hardware.

I am going to pretend this is not an Apple concept and just an unbranded ultra-slim (because I have no love for Apple). I would love to see any ultra-slim with a Core 2 Duo Intel chip, NOT an Atom chip because, let’s face it folks, the Atom is pretty good for low power consumption and heat, but runs stupid slow… 1 GB RAM bare minimum and possibly two harddrives (one 32 or 64 GB SSD for the OS and a 160GB HDD). The SSD is not really necessary if they can figure out a way to get a Core 2 Duo to run on an ultra-slim without cooking the user’s hands and also large capacity SSD’s are actually prone to failure after only a few write cycles. The point is that something this “portable” should be almost “instant boot”.

A dedicated graphics card would probably be asking for too much, since even regular sized laptops don’t sport much more than an integrated gfx card. Also a fingerprint scanner would be sweet (pretty much standard on the high-end VAIO and actually does make life just that little bit easier).

Could people stop making Apple mockups? They’re quite literally never as good as the real thing, and often, they miss the mark by a long shot. Worse still is something Apple would never come up with, yet bears an Apple logo because the designer thought it would make their product look better.

What should it hold, the topic is? Should we even care? Netbooks are all the same, by and large. Atom, WiFi, SSD, and a few other odds and ends.

    • Jimmy C says:

Luke, if you're not going to participate properly, then go take a time out. We asked you to give your opinion about what should be inside, not to criticize what's on the outside. And if you don't care, then you shouldn't be visiting this website.

First, why is it red? If you’re going to mock up an Apple machine, at least follow their aesthetic so it looks half convincing.

I like the slide-out trackpad, but question how well that could be implemented.

  • Savox says:

Why are there so may designers that see Apple as the grand example of design? If you can’t get attention to your product without the (ab)use of the Apple logo, you are very likely not that much of a designer. Apple is just some company, not the holy grail. Your design is a true winner if it wins on its own feet.

Back on topic: Although I really like the sliding touchpad, Isn’t it much more convienient/compact/Apple-alike to implement a multitouch touchscreen? Or maybe even a multitouch touchscreen for keyboard like the OLPC XO-2.
And for the colour: Red is Bad for You!

  • v2nx says:

The slide out track pad seems like it would make using it on your lap really terrible, and being an ultra portable, I’d imagine you’d want to use it like that quite often.

  • Avisioncame says:

Sorry, but apple would never make something that ugly and dell-esque. Why aren’t concept designers catching on to this? I mean RED? Jesus.

    • emschelle says:

I think the bright color is due to the fact that it is a mac “Mini,” and colors like the iPod nano lines could be integrated for more awesome. I’d buy a red one- =)

  • snoop says:

the tables reflection is much too high. looks like a second “foot”

  • Anthony says:

I think the touchpad should go on next step after they got multi-touch point function like drawing etc.
so in this design I suggest to enlarge the touchpad to full screen size, and think of how to use it as Tablets with or without pen.
Even remove the keyboard, get printing of keys on touchpad, use the touch sense as a real keyboard!(multi-touch can use as ctrl+alt+del function)

  • Nishita says:

Can we assume that it is the perfect piece of equipment with only the littlest problem that the sliding tray doesn’t as yet have an adequate function???? can we FORGET about the stupid renders! comment on it when the product is actually in production or something 😛

Let me introduce a phrase called HYPOTHETICAL SITUATION. ASSUME, therefore, that you have a fully functional laptop with a sliding tray over the keyboard & you HAD to add a function to the sliding tray- What Would That Function Be.

    • Jimmy C says:

YES! EXACTLY! THANK YOU! SOMEONE, FOR ONCE, HAS UNDERSTOOD WHAT THIS WEBSITE IS FOR!

  • adela says:

the touchpad looks very fragile after it is extended
and the last row of keys doesn’t look like it can be used at all with the trackpad platform in the way

  • StanS says:

I agree with one of the above posters, people need to stop making ridiculous apple mockups, of notebooks, betbooks, iPhone, iPods, etc.

it’s all fail. Your wasting your time. This is wasting our time. It’s BS and ridiculous. Dream more but keep it in your head and stop littering the net with this crap already.

  • Jerome says:

I disagree with all the shitty people saying ” stop making mockups”

It help inspire others. Inspiration mean to help you in future ideas, help you to get unstuck when you don’t know where to search.

It makes you dream, thus make you human.

I really love the idea of that design. I copy of the viao P with a sliding mouse pad.

  • Jerome says:

if you not happy with the colour go check his website for a white version different mousepad mechanism ( that does not make sense )

  • Chris Burns says:

It should be a blog machine. It should come standard with every browser, Taco HTML Edit, RBrowser for FTP uploads, Photoshop, Tweetdeck, Text Edit, Preview, Adium, and that’s it.

I’m talking Mac stuff, of course, and no mention of processor power n stuff. Whatever. Bloggers should be able to work on basically any machine, no problem. Travel size = excellent. Not too small, not too large = yay!

  • Chung Dha says:

I rather have a touch screen then a giant trackpad.

  • paman says:

I disagree with Jerome’s shitty comment. It’s fine to dream, but this is a nightmare. What a craptastic failure. He’s right, the internet has way too many of these stupid concepts out there.

Chris Burns: You can get an Asus netbook to do all that. And watch hi-def porn, with a superior battery life to blog all about your porn experience everywheres on teh nets! You’ll help on reducing Smug emmissions by not buying an apple product too!

    • Jimmy C says:

what on earth does apple have to do with emissions? you're like my eight year old brother, you have to talk even though you have no idea what's going on.

  • Clinton says:

It looks just like the sony p series, with the camera on the opposite side and a added touch pad which flips over keyboard.. Have to say not impressed.

  • rjp says:

Why do you show projects like this???? GARBAGE!!!! im going back to designboom…

  • Billy May says:

I think it does a good job exploring efficient interaction with our devices. Alot of times you only check your mail, some blogs and maybe your calendar, never requiring text input. This would accommodate that minimal amount of interaction by supplying the minimal amount of input devices.

Nobody wants to walk around with a full desktop workstation strapped to their back, so why impose every typical input device when only a mouse is needed?

    +clever keyboard-trackpad interaction
    -unnecessary Apple-ing and reddening

  • matcloud says:

    it’s horrible….

  • Alex says:

It should have changing colors 😉 . Like the macbook adjusts its brightness depending on the lighting, it should also adjust the color.

  • Ishaan says:

I quite like that concept, but what would really improve it is if the keyboard and trackpad were like a touch screen where the keyboard and trackpad would usually be on a nomral apple mac book. Just an idea, any opinons?

  • Zuzia says:

I agree..the color is awful! But the idea could be taken further. I think someone here said it before but if the slide-out track pad would actually be a tablet…now that would be awesome! You would just have to work on a hard surface and it could never be a “lap” top…

  • Nishita says:

Thankyou zuzia.. i was waiting for someone to agree! graphic tablet would be fun wouldnt it!

    what else could it be?

  • Xolü says:

    Cristal Keyword

Friendly ergobomic touch for wrist area.

At the black area of the screen, some:

    volume, brighness, mosaic, music…

    touch screen control.

    Have a great day.

  • Hollis Ervin says:

Personally, I would get rid of the stupid-ass “innovation,” the sliding trackpad. Firstly, a trackpad doesn’t have the kind of pressure resolution to function like a good graphic tablet. Second, use of the trackpad now requires movement of the whole forearm instead of one finger. Third, it COVERS UP the keyboard. In other words, this “innovation” is harder to use, adds no benefit at all, and actually hinders the owner’s ability to do real work.

All that, and it will snap off in about a week. This is a complete failure as a design. And what is that screen ratio? Why the hell would anyone want LESS vertical screen?

If you remove the sliding trackpad (that is, if you remove the only thing unique about this “concept”) you’re left with a very small netbook with no specifications or compelling difference of any kind.

    Terrible.

  • Jade Doel says:

Yes and No. But that’s what concepts are all about.
