YD Showcases: Born in Sweden

When Pascal Charmolu, an innovative designer and Kim Vejsholt, a keen businessperson, decided to work together, the resulting partnership gave birth to ‘Born in Sweden.’ Driven with a passion to combine highly innovative design with unexpectedly simple product solutions, the company has grown to accommodate a mix of creative individuals who see and do things differently and have a wealth of international experience. We’ve handpicked for you a collection of their best works; and with this season of giving round the bend, maybe you end up being gifted one!

The Lace Vase by Milk Design Limited provides a super easy way of turning plastic bottles, glass jars, or any other unused container into a simple and elegant vase. The stretchable sleeve is made of silicon rubber and can fit snugly around containers of many different sizes.

Sexy Sound Box

Sexy Sound Box

The Sound Box is more than just a docking station for your iPad (or iPod); it is a radio and alarm clock with integrated hard drive to store your music. I love the super simple and sexy vase-styled wireless speakers. They blend into the room so perfectly. Touchscreen controls and intuitive interface are a given, what’s hot is the minimalist style that is so in-line with Apple products.

The Vein of Life

The Vein of Life

Check out this untitled concept by Kim Joonmin. It’s a vase with a built-in vein that reacts to a living plant by turning red. Not much else to say but it’s gorgeous in simplicity. I totally want one. A very animalistic flower pot if you will.

Identify by Touch

Identify by Touch

The Contact Series gives a dynamic and sensorial experience to the visually impaired user by adding a tactile element in the form of braille lettering to everyday objects. The Contact Series is comprised of mugs, flower vases and coffee cups with raised braille descriptions such as “coffee”, “espresso”, “yours”, “mine”. The Contact Series is inclusive in design and makes dining a fun, seamless and comfortable experience.

Pedestal Lamp

Pedestal Lamp

L.OOD is a pedestal lamp, a concept based on creating open forms and functions from a single refined object. It’s an assemblage of recycled things like lampshades, glass vases, pots, candy dishes and fruit trays. By layering these odd bits and ends together, you create a new form with new purpose purpose.

Wartime Decor, Modern and Upscale

Wartime Decor, Modern and Upscale

The KALAB Exhibition features military surplus and “souvenirs” turned into enigmatic furniture and home decor. Born out of the Israeli conflict, there’s a strong mixture between military and civilian life – defining the culture. Vases made out of bomb shells, ashtrays made from extinct bullets and a sofa stacked like a dugout. It raises questions of security and confronts the idea of civilians playing the part of the soldier.

Portugal Makes Out

Portugal Makes Out

Portugese designers working outside of Portugal are invited by the Made Out Portugal program to work toward a greater hive mind of work. This group is responsible for some magical ideas and fantastical concept designs. Bombshell Greens

Bombshell Greens

The Peaceful Bomb Vase reminds me of the Seedbomb project, which had a similar intent. The only difference that Seedbomb was peaceful bombing of seed-capsules to mother earth and the Peaceful Bomb Vase a showcase of the harvested treasures. The vase is a part of the design team Biaugust’s Peace Collection and apparently a part of the proceeds go to Biaugust’s cause A.N.S.W.E.R. (Act Now to Stop War & End Racism). Love this explosion!

Musical Plants

Musical Plants

The Muse musical vase serenades you with sweet harmonies every time you wind it up. Like a music box but instead of a ballerina, it’s your favorite plant. Kind of reminds me of those plastic sunflowers with sunglasses that would dance when the sun hit them. Almost similar but this is much prettier to look at. Look how happy the models are. They are absolutely thrilled with their singing plants.
