Flamboyance in prepping the food, presenting and entertaining guests from the kitchen space is an art in itself. Pelago Kitchen Island is for those who like to show-off their cooking skills but have limited space. The workstation features multiple counter surfaces that slide away to reveal the sink and has drawers for specific tasks. Granite countertops and aluminum sinks are the obvious choice of materials as they are easy to maintain. It even has a niche space for 2 people to sit while you do the cooking.

Retro Pipes For The Kitchen Sink

Reminding us of the 1930s’ Industrial American Era is the latest collection of Steam Valve Faucets from Jaclo. The retro steamline style is quite evident in the line-up and I quite like it! The collection includes Faucets, Spouts, and Pot Fillers. The most interesting one of course is the Pull-off Spray that unwinds from the bridge mixer (both wall and deck mounted) to be used as a handy hose. The green brigade will love the fact that this collection complies with WaterSense criteria.

Visual Treats

Yummy Tummy! But that ain’t a phone you know; it’s a digital menu card. Snooty waiters and stained-dog-eared menu cards in restaurants are two things that I detest and are a big let-down. Although I hear that some places in the Far East do have a digitalized menu card system, I’m sure it’s not as sleek as this Aygness here. This one’s got features like language options (good for tourists), image representation of dishes, direct order placement to the kitchen, and entertainment tools like news and restaurant trivia.

LEED Platinum Certified in Los Angeles

Cherokee Studios by REthink Development is a new soon to be completed project in Los Angeles boasting LEED Platinum certification. Huge Kudos to REthink since this is only 1 of 12 buildings in California to achieve that rating. The building won’t be completed until September ‘09 but I’m so giddy with excitement that I think REthink and whomever the land owners are should just let me move in. Better yet, lets open the Yanko Design Los Angeles branch in the building!

Classy Kitchen Companions

Of the many things that you require to make your kitchen aesthetically functional, the cutting board, colander, and knife block require the most amount of attention due to the work that they do. These components have to be visually appealing as well as competent enough to endure the rigors that they go through daily. A set of sculpted functional blocks called the Workspace Component Group has been specifically designed for the Backplash System of kitchens by Henrybuilt. They are designed to be integrated around the sink and work classy!

A roof over your head is probably the most important necessity of life; poverty should not be the reason that you get deprived of it. This sentiment is well understood by Jennifer Margell, which is why she has designed affordable homes for slums of Nairobi that are made from recycled materials. Called Makao (Swahili for home), each house can be customized and configured according to individual needs. The roofs of the homes collect and filter gray water; the roof panels also open to release heat.

Specialized Kitchen-Dining For The Physically Challenged

Coox is a specialized kitchen plus dining area meant for those who use wheelchairs; however able-bodied people can use it comfortably as well. Sporting a circular form, the table is divided into two areas, the cooking and the dining. The cooking side hosts a fridge, microwave oven, induction cooker, armature, dish rack and drawers. A wheelchair-bound person’s basic anthropometric measurements have been taken into consideration while designing it.
