History suggests that over twenty inventors worked toward the creation and design of the light bulb. Of these, Thomas Edison’s version was the most efficient. We are not here to dispute any claims but to appreciate the various forms and representations it has taken. Coming to the present times (and a bit into the future), let’s look at ten creative re-inventions of this light source.

Have you ever wondered how you could be the best designer in the world? How to be that money making Design Virtuoso? I know I have. What about you?
I sort of knew what it took, but I never really knew what it took, until today. According to Chris Guillebeau, the man behind The Art of Nonconformity, if you want to a virtuoso, or just be really good with anything (music, sport, design etc.), you will need to invest approximately 14,600 hours of practice or training to get there.
Designer Adam vows that he never looked to any specific design while conceptualizing the City Vehicle, but I think if we were to re-do the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car for the future urbanites then this would be it. Hosting all eco factors like solar technology on the surface of the roof, regenerative braking, electric motor and capabilities of harnessing wind power as well, this concept car is meant only for city commute. To keep the vehicle light and easy all high-tech gadgetry has been ditched and only the bare essentials incorporated.

Styled as a sleek looking Samsonite Briefcase, the B-Seat is in fact a baby seat for infants and children up to 6 years. The focus of this concept is mainly on safety, ergonomic details, comfort and looks. Designed to be molded from strong plastic with chrome details, the guise of an elite briefcase befits the globe-trotting mamas and dads. Two things missing: comfy, cushioned seating that most baby seats require and handles to carry it. However the exterior design is totally with it!

Aversion to new fangled technology? Wanna keep it old school but modern and classy? Don’t I sound the an infomercial? If you said yes to all the above, check out this credit card size notepad. It uses foil and rubber to imprint whatever you write using an included stick but any blunt surface will do. If you’re not familiar with the old tech, the built-in slider brings it to a clean slate. I believe this is concept only.

You’ve got the need for the speed in the streets. You’ve got to go faster than your crappy metal-on-metal jalopy can take you. Faster, harder, stronger! Check out the Nissan-Motivity 400C concept by Tryi Yeh. The 400C has the Maglev engine system in each tire, making it quite floaty and speedy. The 400C has a wild, new triangle shape that reduces drag, while the driver seat controls retain their classic build (although, as you’ll see, you still might have a time getting used to the seat!)

Many of us park our cars at the railway station and then catch the local train to work or wherever it is that we have to go. Building on this theory is the Paracité, a single person commuter car that plans on putting the car itself on the rail tracks. Generally there is a 5 miles free space between two trains on a regular railway track. This free space and time can be utilized by these commuter cars to get people going on to their destinations.

It’s the DOT: Direct On-demand Transport. It’s aimed foremost at London. It’s a small non-poluting vehicle that not only works on a giant organized system that reduces traffic and travel time to a minimum, it’s made to encourage car-pooling as well. Each unit can combine with another unit to create a larger unit. And boy are you gonna enjoy the way the vehicle works.

It’s an art gallery! In a nutshell, it’s both a shipping container for artwork and a gallery for the artwork once it reaches it’s destination. Inspired by the work of Marcel Duschamp: perhaps you’ve heard of him. Duschamp created 24 suitcases which he brought with him to display his works of art to places where it would have been unrealistic to bring their larger counterparts. In the same way, this “Box in a Crate” is made in such a way that it might be opened and displayed in a wild array of places, indoors and out.

A good comfortable and fitted mask is quite essential when you are in your workshop modeling your ID prototypes. Revolutionizing this theory is the Respirator Mask Design by Elijah Stillson. The design takes into account the contouring of the human head and is inspired by natural forms like fish gills. By moving the filters out of the user’s field of vision, the design improves safety while working and re-balances the weights. Since the filter cartridge is integrated into the mask, it closes when the respirator is not being worn and extents the filter’s life.

Geist Projector thinks itself to be a levitating fakir, but sadly it’s not! The magic happens coz of the electromagnetic field, which makes the “projector ball” levitate on the base. This gives an almost unlimited amount of mobility to the image projection field. The system keeps audio-visual reproduction as priority and thus is compatible with the multitude of recording formats available in the market. The projector base splits up into 4 parts and consists of the speakers, battery pack, input slots and card slots. Take a look at the detailed slides inside for all the info.

I don’t blame the woman in this pic for looking so stiff coz I wouldn’t know how to react to this kitsch helmet. Made from textile instead of rigid materials, the “TopUp Head Protection” for cyclists and walkers is an exploration of the honeycomb pattern and device a protective gear for the head. The brief was to design a gear that was is light and compact and that could deal with minor bumps and falls. The honeycomb was an obvious choice for its impact resistance and shock absorption qualities.
