Welcome To The Library

Welcome To The Library

For someone who stares at a monitor for most part of the day, an e-book reader is not such a novelty. No matter how convenient it may be, but at the end of the day it’s still a screen! Can anything replace the smell of fresh, crisp paper? Alas, this is 2010 and the gadget-freaks are going to want more “tech” stuff, and this Library e-book Reading Device caters to their whims.

This Floater's for the Eye

This Floater’s for the Eye

Sometimes you’re looking around and you get a speck of something in your eyeball sight line. It goes all over with your eye as you move your glazzies about! This is sort of like that, only it’s a cellphone. Designer Mac Funamizu totaled the amount of time he’s got his cellphone sitting on his desk for all to see to be 80% of his day. Lots of time for aesthetic beauty and interactive loveliness. This phone aims to please.

Best of Yanko Design 2009

Best of Yanko Design 2009

The year 2009 can be marked as one of the most defining years for Yanko Design and its community. The year can be re-capped with the Best of 2009, but on the same note it’s important to iterate our accomplishments. When the world was facing its worst global recession in decades, (including the design industry as a whole), YD on its part grew its outlook by innovating to stay ahead of the game. For a moment you can actually say that Innovation has been the theme symbolic to YD and this year’s best designs.

Electric Motorcycle Route 66

Electric Motorcycle Route 66

What’s got two bald tires, runs on electricity, and is red and black all over? ZEVS! An elegant futuristic electric motorbike by three fellows, one of whom we’ve had up on Yanko before: Bernhard Ranner. Look and see, see and judge weather this bike performs to your aesthetic and atta-glance logistics standards if you dare.

VJ's Could Probably Be DDR Champions With This

VJ’s Could Probably Be DDR Champions With This

Thru a tangible interface, Video Remix imbues vj’ing with fluidity and natural expression that’s currently lacking. The interface comprises of a hand controller and pressure sensitive floor. The hand controller handles video clip selection and floor mixes between three channels of video based upon applied pressure. It opens up a performative style of interaction that frees vj’ing from being chained to the mouse and keyboard. Encouraging a greater diversity of performers to the media.

A Fresh New Look At The Computer

A Fresh New Look At The Computer

We are so traditional in our ways that we tend to presume the obvious materials of choice for something like our computers. Now, would you buy the theory of stretching a Bamboo fabric across the aluminum frame of the comp to protect its innards? This will not only cut costs of manufacturing by 65%, but also the bamboo will also do well as a ventilator.

Give Your Input on The Mozilla Phone

Give Your Input on The Mozilla Phone

Working with Aza Raskin of Mozilla Labs as part of their Concept Series, yours truly is helming the open source project to design the Mozilla Phone.  The lovely BlackBerry you see here is the first throw-away concept to come out of the project blog at MozPhone.com. While only a crude mashup of a Blackberry 7130 and the Optimus Keyboard, its serves to illustrate how much more we need phones to communicate with us.

As Simple or Complex as You Want it to be

As Simple or Complex as You Want it to be

Fingerprint recognition to activate biometric profile. Blank surface when not in use. 3-D interface with artificial intelligence that automatically rearranges your options and thangs based on usage and preference. Touchscreen with growing buttons (really, 3D, up in your face.) How many “smart” phones does it take to screw together the world community?

I got the hookup! Or should I say C. Ferraz do?

Asp-Adder Take A Hike, Slythrin Is Here

Asp-Adder Take A Hike, Slythrin Is Here

For some reason I have a very soft corner for designer Mac Funamizu. I know sometimes his designs can get outlandish, but like I always say, you need to dream BIG to achieve something in life. His latest concept is a portable projector device that wraps around your hand like a bracelet. This modern bridge between the physical and digital world comes with a camera, a projector and WiFi. Interestingly he compares & names it after the beautiful white snake, SnowCorn.

Beauty is Minimal, OneLessDesk Review

Beauty is Minimal, OneLessDesk Review

A long while back we were enamored with a seemingly simple bi-level desk from a company called Heckler Design. After a couple emails and a lot of patience (thank you Dean), we finally have our review of the OneLessDesk. At first glance, you’d be hard pressed to understand why something this simple could command a $649 price tag. But as with most minimalist designs, it takes some creative engineering and expensive manufacturing to pull off the perfect balance between aesthetic/function. Hit the jump for my review.

Holograms Can Be Fun

Holograms Can Be Fun

Hologram technology may still be in a full bloom, but that doesn’t stop some designers from conceiving fun ideas to play around with. Like a kid in a candy store, the 3D Desktop Concept is perfect for computer-freaks like me. Natural hand movements across the black curtain to crumple and discard documents, or type out a virtual page akin to a typewriter; this concept has virtual holographic goodies by the dozens! If the idea is too overbearing then switch off the embedded tiny projectors and use this as a desk lamp!

Why Should I Want This MID

Why Should I Want This MID

Really, why would I want this MID (Mobile Internet Device) over the current iPhone I use? Lord! I know you’re up to your neck with Apple banging, so for a change let’s compare it to an LG Arena, Samsung I7500 or even BlackBerry Storm 2. Where does this MID score over the rest of these Internet efficient phones? Two places: Prime Real Estate i.e. a three screen setup that opens to 210 x 210 mm and an Integrated Stand.
