12 Inspirational and Exclusive Interviews on Yanko Design – Robert Brunner

Everyday Yanko Design assimilates and presents pioneering concepts that are sourced from a pool of talented young designers. In an effort to do something special for this brilliant community, I have pieced together a series of 12 exclusive interviews with renowned designers who talk about their journey and experiences, share lessons they have learnt and give you an insight on how to draw on your own energies to be the best. I start the series with my talk with Robert Brunner, founder of Ammunition Group and past-Director of Design at Apple, the designer of the original Macintosh PowerBook and Newton.

KwickScreen Wins 2011 James Dyson Award

KwickScreen Wins 2011 James Dyson Award

A winner of the 2011 James Dyson Award, this incredibly useful design called the KwickScreen is already finding its place in hospitals around the world. Inspired by the tongue of a frog, the retractable, portable screen uses innovative fiberglass tubes (originally designed for use in space) to bring flexibility to care environments, allowing better space management while helping prevent infection and providing added privacy.

Amphibian Inspiration

Amphibian Inspiration

Named after it’s inspiration, the Auratus chaise lounge by designer Wilson Niño mimics the form of a poison dart frog and has brilliant coloring to match. Though it might look like it’s ready to jump, don’t worry, it’s non-toxic and slime-free. An ultra-plush cushion mean you can kick back in comfort while you sharpen those blowdarts.

CES 2011 Part 3

CES 2011 Part 3

Just three days into CES, the buffet foods, complimentary candies, sleepless nights, coffee and energy drinks are taking their toll on everyone, everyone but me because I came prepared. I’m dressed to the nines, rocking my freshly knitted tabi boots, constantly sucking on my Water Bobble, here to bring you part 3 of our coverage.

Wild Froggy Trike Action

Wild Froggy Trike Action

This is the wildest recumbent trike you will ever see in all your days. It’s got such a fury that you’ll probably rocket off right into space when you ride it. It’s got customizability to the max, fitting directly to your body shape and desire. This is the “OOPHAGA” and it’s got a frog for a logo, and chassis made of carbon fiber. The color combination is customizable, and so are the rims. There’s shock absorbers, removable headrest, and because of its totally analog setup, is completely eco friendly. Made for asphalt, but dares you to take it offroad.

Ten Creative Re-Invention Of The Light Bulb

Ten Creative Re-Invention Of The Light Bulb

History suggests that over twenty inventors worked toward the creation and design of the light bulb. Of these, Thomas Edison’s version was the most efficient. We are not here to dispute any claims but to appreciate the various forms and representations it has taken. Coming to the present times (and a bit into the future), let’s look at ten creative re-inventions of this light source.

Talking with Tucker Viemeister, Co-Founder of Smart Design, Frog NY, Springtime-USA and more

For the last installment coming out of the IDSA conference, I had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Tucker Viemeister whose long list of credits in the annals of industrial and strategic design is best described by his Wikipedia entry.  Presenting a “Manifesto of Industrial Design in the Post-Economic Era”, his talk highlighted the misuse of design as an engine for the economy when it should be pursued for its own end.  Read on for Tucker’s perspective.

Interview with Jon Kolko of Frog Design

Having met Jon Kolko at the Bounce IDSA conference I was pleased as punch to get him to sit down for an exclusive YD interview.  Acting as Senior Design Analyst at Frog Design in Austin and Editor-in-Chief of Interactions Magazine, Jon brings dizzying insights to the worlds of interaction design and its ramifications to industrial design and research.  Click through to our interview after the jump, but also check out some of his excellent talks like the recent Austin Creative Confab or his presentation on design synthesis.

IDSA Mideast Conference: Barbecues, Arthritic Murder and an Argyle Lamb

As some of you may know, the Industrial Designers Society of America plays host to a collection of conferences every spring, and this year Long, our magnanimous editor, saw fit to send me off to the mid-east conference in Pittsburgh to report back to you all.  The long and short of it?  If you don’t have a job, don’t worry, nobody else does either.

Ambidextrous Wacom Intuos 4 Review

Ambidextrous Wacom Intuos 4 Review

Once upon of time the Intuos line of drawing tablets from Wacom were designed for creative professionals but with the Intuos 4 line, I would go out on a limb and say it’s inclusive of everyone’s needs. Traditional artists who complained of pressure sensitivity (or lack there-of) will be happy to know it’s twice as sensitive so all the nuances from hand to paper (figuratively) are far more accurate and in real time.

Top Ten Robots That You Never Knew You Wanted

Top Ten Robots That You Never Knew You Wanted

Technology maybe overwhelming for most us, but the future generation is so with it! They have the hang of ever little new gadget and gizmo that comes our way. Which brings me to robots; I can’t fathom the need of an electronic being to do chores for us. I can understand their presence in the medical and industrial arenas; but Irona suits Richie Rich the best. However looking at the current crop, I think it’s best to compile a list of Ten Robots that they never knew they wanted.

The Cash Register You Knew was Coming

The Cash Register You Knew was Coming

Intelligent Cash Registers. Duh. They remember who you are, they know your “interests.” They know you! Intel is going to unveil this prototype “register” at the National Retail Federation show in New York on Sunday, but they’re really pushing the system, not the hardware. (Although, they do mention the fact that the hardware will use 90 percent less power than modern check-outs. Nothing to scoff at.)

Los Angeles, CA, January 6, 2009 – Bunkspeed, developer of the world’s fastest 3D rendering technology for design, engineering, and marketing, today announced that Yanko Design will feature Bunkspeed’s signature rendering software HyperShot as part of its widely popular online publication. The online magazine will offer HyperShot trial downloads and sales to its online community.

“The level of realism delivered by these applications enables the Yanko Design community to better communicate their concepts and ideas,” says Philip Lunn, CEO and founder of Bunkspeed. “Aligning with Yanko Design brings significant exposure to our products and further builds community by linking the design, engineering, and marketing disciplines.”

Takashi Yamada, founder Yanko Design says: “Many design contributors in our community were already using HyperShot, it was an easy decision to choose Bunkspeed. We have always said “it’s all about the best.” Bunkspeed shares that philosophy.”

The HyperShot promotion will allow anyone to achieve state-of-the-art photorealistic effects on designs. “Because there is not a need for a lot of technical experience with HyperShot,” says Lunn, “Bunkspeed democratizes access to advanced 3D rendering. Thanks to Yanko Design, this technology is spreading to a whole new audience of users.”
