Hands of Light and Darkness

Hands of Light and Darkness

It has hands of darkness some times, and hands of light at others. It doesn’t always illuminate the time, but it’ll never leave you in the dark. What is it? Equinox! The clock that’ll illuminate the way you view your hours, minutes, and seconds. Designer Bram Knaapen presents hours as three colored blocks, minutes as a single colored block, and seconds as a fading row of blocks, all of them sliding round and round the Equinox circle.

G.D. Health Fading Fast

G.D. Health Fading Fast

Running out of time! Death is coming to get me! That’s exactly what you think when you work for hours and hours and hours on project after project, be you a graphic designer, industrial designer, interior designer, exterior designer, whatever! Now. How can one solve such a problem of melting into the seat we sit in all day long? Exercise of course. But what one to do! If only there were a sort of Twister-esque… clock!

Projection in Orbit!

Projection in Orbit!

You communist! You love projectors too. It’s been 52 years since the former USSR launched Sputnik. In celebration of the fabulous designtastic shape of the Sputnik, and due to the meaning of Sputnik: “traveling companion,” this entertainment companion is sure to get your eyeballs and mind straight into outer space – tout de suite! It’s a projector with a cuteness!

Glo Pillow - Gently Wakes You In 40 Minutes by Eoin McNally & Ian Walton

Glo Pillow – Gently Wakes You In 40 Minutes by Eoin McNally & Ian Walton

This project aims to design a better and more natural way of being woken than the alarm clock, which is a very violent and intrusive method that disrupts sleep patterns and can induce a ‘fight or flight’ reaction. The ‘glo pillow’ uses an integrated fabric interface for setting the alarm. The time is displayed on the surface of the pillow using an LED grid inside the pillow.

Phantom Water

Phantom Water

You guys wanted it, here it is. Our resident contributer and critic Zippy Flounder’s latest project called Phantom Water. A clock whose face is dynamically created by the science (magic) of ferro fluidics. His design goes beyond normal ferro fluids by being clear, non-toxic and eco-friendly. The technology is being marketed as “Smart Water” (isn’t that a drink?), which could go beyond clock applications to signage displays and anything else your creative minds can think of. Check out the video after the jump and sound off in comments!

Eau de Temps

Eau de Temps

“I love the smell of Napalm in the morning…” – Robert Duvall (Apocalypse Now). Though I question anyone’s sanity that might actually mean those very words, it does speak of the fundamental truth that a particular scent has the power to instantly transform our moods.

Design Digest Vol.15

Design Digest Vol.15

Well it is Thursday once again and you know what that means..? yeah, neither do I but here is this weeks installment of YD’s Design Digest; A compendium of easily digestible design delights from around the inter-webs. First up on the hit parade, Scott Amron brings us his “Clock”design… yup, it’s a clock with extra bits thrown in for poops and giggles.

Ultimate iPod Dock

Ultimate iPod Dock

The E-Pod dock crams everything you need to get the most out of your iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPod by acting as a speaker, movie projector, and alarm clock. It promises powerful hi-fidelity even those it’s not much bigger than a standard alarm clock. The most interesting feature is the projector. No info on how large, how bright, or how sharp the resolution but the entire thing does tilt. I see a few glaring problems with it tho. Do you?

Time, the Immovable Object

Time, the Immovable Object

Do you carry a watch anymore? That’d be stylish. Do you wear one on your wrist? That’d be so 90′s. Designer Stas Aki stops the hands of the clock without stopping time. Don’t misunderstand it! It’s a look at global togetherness. If the global economy isn’t evidence enough, the Aki Clock identifies how much we’re tied together, all over time.

2.5 mm Radius Series by Plus Minus Zero

2.5 mm Radius Series by Plus Minus Zero

A 2.5mm R (radius) is a roundness, a roundness that echoes that born of the touch of people’s hands or the weathering over time of a piece of square timber whose edges have been planed so as not to cause discomfort to those who handle it. It is a roundness that people are accustomed to feeling. The small rectangular objects are also of a size and shape that feels comfortable to the touch.

Rattle And Hum: Wake Me Up Before You Go Go

Rattle And Hum: Wake Me Up Before You Go Go

Lady to hotel receptionist, “Hello, I’d like a wake up at 6:00 a.m.” Receptionist, “But Ma’am there’s an JOININ’ Alarm Clock by your bedside, you could use that!” Lady, “I already tried that hon; that darn thing doesn’t work!” Receptionist, “Ma’am did you place some coins or a pencil in the steel cup above the clock?” Lady, “Now why would I do that miss?” Receptionist, “to work the alarm ma’am! You can place whatever you like; marbles, pins, your wedding ring and when the alarm goes off, it rattles the contents in the cup to wake you!”

Knocking On My Vase

Knocking On My Vase

This is so clever I am giggling inside. This concept came across my desk ages ago but it is only now that I am getting to it. I apologize to the designer because it is as brilliant then as it is now. The SEVRES VASE CLOCK is pretty self explanatory. An adjustable hammer gently knocks on any vase you place on the stand on the hour, every hour. Different vases produce different sounds so potentially every home’s clock looks and sounds different just from one device.
