Pratt's Third+Bond; More Like Third+Awesome

Pratt’s Third+Bond; More Like Third+Awesome

Pratt, in a crazy scheme to promote its students, alumni and faculty, recently outfitted two Brooklyn condos on the corner of 3rd and Bond Street with every manner of design paraphernalia, invited a bunch of people and put up an open bar. Color me there.  Drawing on past and present Pratt faculty and students like Eva Zeisel and Tucker Viemeister, the spaces came alive with conscious, inventive, often green, always cool design.

Getting All Mothy Up In Here

Getting All Mothy Up In Here

What in the world is that. Is that a boat? Is that a flying dirigible? Nay! It’s a moth! A moth is a kind of small, FAST, single-handed sailboat made for racing. Originated some time in the early 1900’s in North Carolina, the classic Moth can be any number of things: skiff, pram, scow, dinghy, basically anything within the restrictions of 75lbs, 72 Sw Fr sail area, and a maximum beam of 60 inches. What David Valham has done here is to make a Moth into a superior flying machine that’s riding on the edge of boatness, appearing to nearly take off!

Harley Davidson Circa 2020

Harley Davidson Circa 2020

Somebody pass me a helmut and a time travel ship because if this is what Harley bikes look like in 10 years, I’m so there. Designer Miguel Cotto pays homage to the big road hogs by keeping the large 883cc engine, complete with high revs and roars. The similarities end there. The design is almost tron-like in execution. Check out the wheel hubs. They’re actually giant bearings. I do see glimpses of Harley DNA in the center chassis but seriously, can you image any road warriors riding this?

Coat Rack of Many Colors

Coat Rack of Many Colors

Let’s pretend for a moment that you live in the same state I do. Not the same state of mind, but the same physical location in the United States of America. I live in Minnesota. It is here on this ring of Earth that we have four very distinct seasons. For at least 2 of these seasons, we’ve got no use for a coat rack.* What does the rack look like then when you have no need for it?

A Bit of a Turtle Shell

A Bit of a Turtle Shell

That’s all you need for the most naturally ninja-tastic backpack you’re ever gonna own. Straight from Shenkar College of engineering and design in Tel Aviv, Israel, here’s Davidi Galid’s “Meiosis.” Three dimensional polygons galore in a grid system that screams naturalistic and it’s probably really really safe on the inside.

How To Read A Non-Braille Book

How To Read A Non-Braille Book

You’re blind, I mean sight impaired and the situation is that you wanna read Harry Potter but the Braille version is not available. So you pop out the “Haptic Reader”, place it on the front page, and allow it to scan the contents. Almost magically all the letters get converted to Braille, which dot the surface of the reader. Want more magic? Turn on the voice system, to hear the story instead.

The camera is one gadget that gets me jittery. We have come a long way from the pin hole to the digitalized era; but the abundant options and navigations in the current ones leave me all confused. One time, I almost managed to ruin my African Safari photographs coz I forgot to switch the focus from manual to automatic! However, here is a look at ten concept cameras for the future that are conspiring to leave me as the amateur photographer, while you folks become the pro.
