Best of Yanko Design 2011

Steve Jobs hired designer Hartmut Esslinger as the modern-day Snow White for his projects code-named after the seven dwarfs. The vision was to infuse Apple products with “born-in-America gene” and DNA inspired by “Hollywood and music, a bit of rebellion and natural sex appeal.” Hartmut’s mantra was simple, “Form follows emotion,” a twist on the maxim that form follows function. Yanko Design respects both these aphorisms but believes that we should not limit creativity within the realms of form, function and emotions; thus we follow Form Beyond Function.

Chemically Powered to Charge

Chemically Powered to Charge

The Eco Power Strip is an alternate energy production source that bypasses traditional oil and the new-age hydrogen alternatives. Electricity is produced by electrolysis – the combination of oxygen with hydrogen in bio-ethanol (DEFC: Direct-ethanol fuel cells); using energy without carbonic acid gas. The tech is viable but will we ever see this in practical applications?

Aurora - Second Skin by Lighting by Kyeok Kim

Aurora – Second Skin by Lighting by Kyeok Kim

Aurora creates patterns of light on the body as ornamentation, extending the ornamented space around the body and restyling its decorative silhouette by motion. Aurora highlights the relationship between different pieces of jewellery, by its nature the pieces interact with the another. To operate the decorative light, one must gently move the ring (containing a magnet) towards the main jewellery piece.

Save The Animals And Yourself

Save The Animals And Yourself

Zerokill are Solar Powered panels that are supposed to line the highway and help reduce animal road-kills during nighttime driving. It works in two ways: there are infrared sensors built into the body of Zerokill and when they detect an animal within the vicinity, they beam out subtle blinking LED lights, so as to warn the oncoming motorist. For the second part of the process, it reflects the oncoming car’s headlights, illuminating the sideways, as a warning to the animals. Like they say forewarned is forearmed!

Cooler Than A Mushroom

Cooler Than A Mushroom

We normally think of central air conditioners as large cube shaped metal crates that do nothing for a building’s figure but the Mushroom AHU (air handling unit) proves design can make a world a difference. Apparently the shape of a mushroom is well suited to circulate air. One day, large buildings may have clusters of mushrooms in alleys and rooftops. I love the idea if it works but I’m more concerned about art imitating life. Are my Super Mario dreams coming true?

Lights Lead The Way

Lights Lead The Way

The simply named Road Lights is a system of wind generated lane lights powered by the wind of vehicles whizzing by. You’ve all felt it before, that wall of air as a car passes by. Why waste it? The energy captured by the system illuminates a series of pegs 50-100 meters in front of you to lead the way. Eco-friendly (yes I’m still using that phrase) and a perfect opportunity for a really creative car commercial.

Total Beach Bum!

Total Beach Bum!

I have a confession; I’m a total lost cause when it comes to recharging my phone, iPod and camera. Three gadgets I can’t leave my home without and somehow, I always leave it till the last moment for recharging! Needless to say, I manage just some amount of power on them and carry their wires with me, and plug them in the next available socket. Dandy, but what do I and others like me do, when we hit the beaches? Carry the Solar Tree of course!
