Accessible Appliance

Accessible Appliance

Prometheus is a multifunctional kitchen appliance aimed at giving handicapped users the experience of cooking safely at home. The unit uses magnetic induction that allows the user to change temperatures simply by repositioning metal pots. The electric current is induced in a closed circuit when the magnetic flux through the surface bounded by the conductor changes. Visual and audio cues as well as braille and embossed instructions also provide added safety and ease of use for various types of impairment.

Clever ID Tag

Clever ID Tag

Braille Electric Plug Tags are Velcro fastening labels that identify a plug using Braille, embossed icon and English abbreviation of products. The concept is backed by the research that many independent visually impaired folks find it difficult to identify their appliance/gadget plugs, especially when many of them are hooked on a multi-socket power board. Clever and easily reusable, the concept is good for regular folks too.

Braille iPad

Braille iPad

The Omnifer is an innovative cover for the iPad that transforms it’s flat surface into Braille, reflecting the contents of the page you are surfing. Essentially the idea is to make the iPad accessible to the sight impaired. If supporting technology for this does come around, then I’m sure it will be quite a revolutionary concept to be commercialized. Nevertheless, when not in the Braille mode, the jacket acts as a protective gear for the iPad. Lovely!

Braille by Hand

Braille by Hand

I’m sure you recollect seeing Braille staplers and dispensers here on YD. What we have today is the Braille Tape; I think it’s the simplest and most functional of them all. It’s just a sticky tape with parallel dots that you can hand punch to write a Braille message. Label bottles or mark out the danger zone, do it in a jiffy.

Reading Braille Aloud

Reading Braille Aloud

The Snail is a Braille reader that works smooth as silk on a surface that’s predictably bumpy! It can record the text as it reads for future playback and it even syncs with a Bluetooth headset so the visually impaired can listen to the book without disturbing others. Features like kinetic recharging and pressure sensitive reading make it the ideal companion for a bookworm!

Handrails That Speak

Handrails That Speak

With their guide stick in one hand and a firm grip on the handrail, the visually challenged rely on instincts while negotiating a flight of stairs. The Safety Dot is a set of braille indents on a handrail, which makes using the stairs an easier task. I love the thoughtful intent and the simple way it can be integrated.

Blind CC Gets Refined

Blind CC Gets Refined

Braille Credit Card is a refined version of the Blind CC, but from a different designer. The card is much sleeker and easier to carry and is akin to regular credit cards we use. It displays the transaction in braille and reconfirms it with audio feedback. Innovation comes in the form of calculation tips and conversion facilities. It’s a practical solution for the visually impaired who loves plastic money as much as I do!
