Off late we have seen a flood of designs which bring out ways to make life easier for the sight impaired. A few good examples are the Braun Bell Mug, Touch Color Digital Braille Drawing Board, and The Universal Phone. These designs inspired me to compile a list from YD’s archives, dedicated to the Blind. Here’s a look at Ten Innovative Designs To Help The Sight Impaired.

Maptor is this wonderful combination of a map and projector that (predictably) projects the desired map onto any surface. Palm of the hand, floor, and walls included. What I really fancy about it, is its size. Small enough to pass off as a lipstick (or a chapstick for you guys), the device is discreet enough for you to quickly hop into a quiet corner, check for directions and make your way forth. All this without anyone knowing that you are lost or need help!

Hello there! I want to tell you about the thing called “collective conscious”: It’s a theory which says we (humans) all share, on some level, the same databank of knowledge, learning and creating together. Keeping that in mind, take a look at this, Seon-Keun Park’s braille-central phone: the second universally accessible phone we’ve discovered here on Yanko in so many weeks!

Everyone knows how to tie shoelaces but most don’t know how to properly adjust them. That uncomfortable shoe could just be a matter of tension. Technically you should readjust every 4-5th wear. Why even bother if there’s something better? The No Shoelace Shoe uses a single strap that wraps around the entire width of your foot’s arch. By simply tightening or loosening a velcro strap, you achieve the perfect fit. Designed for runners but this simple design could easily translate into any footwear.

E-book readers, emails and other such digital facilities are making paper redundant to an extent. But the one area that I’m not ready to compromise is the Newspaper. My morning ritual of fixing my coffee and curling up with the papers is under threat from the In Newspaper. Yeah, yeah, it does have the perks of an inbuilt alarm clock and fresh content from a choice of global papers, but imagine carrying the flexible display to the loo, where many of us read it while we take a crap!

Thanks to all for appreciating the Yi Earphone, but I must say that some of the responses that I have been getting are pretty overwhelming. All loyal YDers know that we editors merely showcase talents of designers and are in no way involved in the designing process. So it took me by surprise when a mail came in threatening me for showcasing “this copied design”! Well my-dear-upset-designer, I didn’t design it and tell me what are you gonna do about this Universal Zip Lock Earphone?

Visually challenged people require braille books in order to read. However, not many books are available in braille due to cost and inefficiency. Translating a 500 page book into braille nearly doubles the thickness. EAP is a technology that can dynamically change the surface pattern by way of an electromagnetic signal – simulating braille text. Not exactly a new idea but a nice executive nonetheless.
