Philips Design created Next Simplicity; an exploration of a vision for simplicity, always keeping end-user insights, technological innovations and sociological trends at the center of focus.

Behind The Scenes With Philips X810

Behind The Scenes With Philips X810

Ardent fans know that YD rarely covers real-live phones and lets the tech sites do the honors. On the rare occasions that we do cover them, it’s coz we try and bring out a different angle to the phone, like the design angle. I had the opportunity to interact with the Philips X810 designer Trent Stoddard and understand his sensibilities in designing this phone. The task at hand was to design a phone for the Chinese market, for a user who needed a large range of functions (like handwriting recognition) plus reflect luxury and individuality.

Visualizing Light Controller

Visualizing Light Controller

The To Be Touched Range is a series of intuitive light controllers for the LivingColors series by Philips Design. The models in this range from a simple on/off switch to one that includes a dimmer. The beauty in these switches is the visual color effect that they imbibe. The color saturation and intensity are directly proportionate to the lighting settings chosen. So a deep color ring suggests that the lights are at their brightest.

Shopping That Leads To Recycling And Better Living

Shopping That Leads To Recycling And Better Living

Quick question: How many of us think about product life and recycling Before we buy any items? I belong to the group that said “I don’t”, and yes I am ashamed. Luckily for us Philips is developing a concept where product life, recycling methods, shopping environment and client needs are taken into consideration. Welcome to the Circle of Life, featuring a creative shopping environment that considers the product life cycle with recycling options….all before you make the purchase.

The Ultimate Recycle Bin Nourishes As Well

The Ultimate Recycle Bin Nourishes As Well

All those people who scorn at green ideas, here’s the Mother of Them ALL, and its by biggie Philips, so lets see what you’re gonna do about it! Biosphere Home Farming is a structure that houses fishes, root veggies, grasses, plants and algae all under one roof. It takes all your kitchen-trash as fodder for the farm and manages to generate food, water and cooking gas for the family. In short you consume your trash in a more refined way! Ok, enough of green bashing hit the jump to see what exactly Philips has to say about this concept.

Sunshine On A Rainy Day Means Loads Of Energy

Sunshine On A Rainy Day Means Loads Of Energy

2020 is really not that far away, but are we prepared to experiment with what Philips has conjured up for our housing options of the future? They are proposing that we harness the energies of the elements to sustain our living quarters by entrapping the renewable resources on-site, using some membrane-type of contraption! Shifting the focus from eco-friendly building materials, Off the Grid Sustainable Habitat 2020 will do-away with “inert outer surfaces” that merely protect out exteriors by making them intelligent.

Food For Thought

Food For Thought

There’s a paradigm shift in the science of food. Fifteen ago proper nutrition meant augmenting the kind of foods you ate. Buzz words like low-carb, low-cal, non-fat, low-glycemic, organic, and natural made their way into our vocabulary and yet we’re becoming fatter and unhealthier. Philips Design envisions a range of products that not only identify the true contents of food, but also how it affects your individual body.

The Fad Of Molecular Cooking

The Fad Of Molecular Cooking

Gourmet Guru Michelin star chef Juan Mari Arzak, thinks Molecular Cooking is the next step in gastronomical heaven. Presented here are three design concepts – Lunar Eclipse (bowl), Fama (long plate) and Bocado de Luz (serving plate), that take culinary expertise to celestial planes. Juan Mari & his daughter Elena Arzak feel that presentation skills not only entice the palate but also dynamically alter the sensory experience during a meal.

Printing My Food By The Molecule

Printing My Food By The Molecule

Molecular gastronomy studies the physical and chemical processes that occur while cooking. It basically tries to investigate and explain the chemical reasons behind the transformation of ingredients. We saw reference to this stream a while ago and now inspired by the so-called ‘molecular gastronomists’ who take pride in completely deconstructing food only to re assemble them bizarre modern ways, Philips Design presents the Food Creation Concept.

Cooking Up The Eco Greens

Cooking Up The Eco Greens

The Green Cuisine takes inspiration from the Japanese Teppanyaki steakhouse style of cooking and serving. Hosts and guest get comfy in the cooking area where preparation and consumption form the part of the eco-routine. Food is cooked in appliances like the Healthy Steamer, Smart Kettle & Cups, and Cooking Modules, that work together on an interactive Kitchen Table. The integrated performance indicator monitors and displays energy consumption, giving you a fair idea of how Green you have been!

A Light Up in Africa

A Light Up in Africa

Solar powered and good for 500 charges. First things last! Who is this product aimed at? Villagers. Impoverished or otherwise living without regular electricity. This is a light that allows people (children in school especially) read and work long after sundown where it would have been otherwise difficult to impossible.

Simple, nice.

In The Near Future

In The Near Future

Near Future as in 2010; thankfully the designers are not dating it like 2050 or 2200 for this concept! Anyways we are talking about the Persian Delight: Nokia CLIPit Concept Mobile Phone. Brushed steel and Persian turquoise stone encrusted, this phone proposes a bevy of features like finger print as your SIM, Touch pad-Dot matrix screen, hands free clip on design, and a combo of Philips Lumalive and conceptual “Smart fabrics” to blend out a 12”screen!
