I’ve recently had the pleasure of chatting it up with Remy Nagelmaeker (awesome surname!), one of the founders and designers of mobile accessories label MUJJO. Affectionately referred to as the “Dutchies,” Remy and his partners have been crafting some of the most beautiful cases and sleeves for iPhones and iPads. This unique, marine-inspired design adopts the basic form of one of the world’s naturally occurring sculptural elements, the seashell. The elegant shape has always attracted the eye of artists, scientists and designers and like the seashell, this design’s eye-catching, bilateral symmetry and natural strength are also sure to pass the test of time. Contrasting cylindrical cushions, expert craftsmanship and a subtle nautical feel make it a great compliment to classic and contemporary spaces alike.

The Crescent evolve is an electric bicycle designed for young guns who would like an alternative to mopeds. Based on the research and feedback gathered, the design evolved to what it is today. It main focus in design was to integrate the battery to the shape and to create a wholeness that is simple and intuitive. The electric bicycle is easy to use and operate, with an automatic transmission engine. It features a smart modular system that allows you to choose design with mudguards, rear rack, or without.

Electrolux Design Lab’s 10th Anniversary challenge to international design students is to design products that develop the sensory experience of home appliances. The countdown has begun, and after the shortlist of 80 nominations has been tightened to 30 shortlisted entries. The next step will be to announce the Top 10, who will be invited to Milan in October, to present their projects. The jury will as always, include Henrik Otto SVP of Global Design at Electrolux. As media partners Yanko Design will be at the event, keeping you updated via YD, Facebook & Twitter, till the ultimate winner is declared.
Designed for the wild Down Under, the Walamai Outback Explorer concept is both functional and stylish, proving that vehicles with a camping package don’t have to look lame! The design features plenty of camping extras including an integrated inflatable tent with plenty of room to stretch out, an on-board kite system that utilizes renewable wind energy to supplement the electric motor’s charge, and even a pheromone emitter that will ward off dangerous animals!

It’s not often that we feature something that’s purely decor, but this piece by Bongo Design is particularly interesting. The Steel Fox is a modern, minimal (and fox-friendly!) take on the taxidermy animal bust. In solid steel, it will look great next to the cardboard deer or paper rhino that are so “in” right now!

I love the idea behind the GO Recycle bin. Most countries follow a color-coded system for sorting the trash. However sometimes you can get confused, despite pictures and explanations on the bin. So what better way than explicitly fashioning the bin lid to let you know what goes where. As the designers put it, “intending to revolutionize the recycling industry and make it consumer-friendly, the idea of the GO bin is make recycling fun and convenience.”

Its peak summer in some countries so hopefully Michal Bonikowski’s Snowmobile concept will bring you some respite! In any case it’s awesome to see some diverse talents in Michal, who is famous for his Facebook Phones on YD. The mission with this snowmobile is pure personal pleasure; something that is a perfect marriage of excellent handling, all-terrain-vehicle and a closed cabin for the driver.

The Mouth Factory project implements remind of the horror dentistry tools of yesteryears. However, looking deeper into the concept you realize that these series of functional machines specifically designed to be operated by the mouth of the user, can be developed or used as research for tools that people with limited mobility can use. However the designer explains his project as thus, “project explores the capabilities and versatility of the mouth and correlating facial expressions, re-contextualized within the realm of production.”

Oprah asks us to squat, Europeans provide you with a protective cover and the Japanese provide you with self-cleaning of the toilet seats. The question is; are the public toilets as clean as we deem them to be, especially when we do what Oprah says? To be really sure about its hygiene, Bluelarix Designworks has developed the CSM Automatic Toilet. It is an automatic toilet system, which can be mounted on any toilet.

The KUGL light transforms the idea of lighting in the form of stationary objects into a mobile system of induction-charged units with an adorably unorthodox globe shape. Each ball features a flat, magnetic surface on it’s lower hemisphere that allows it to be mounted on any metal surface and twisted to achieve the desired directional light. After use, simply throw it on the docking station until it’s needed again. Genius!

The Stove is an emergency stove that was inspired by the Great East Japan Earthquake. It basically is a design that allows you to use it for cooking and charging batteries. As the designer explains, “the wood or wooden pellets for the stove are environmentally friendly type of fuel that is easy to handle.” Although intended for earthquake prone Japan, the stove can find value in many other regions as well.

Delight Lamp is a kitchen lamp that creates an intimate illumination for folks who enjoy homemade meal together with friends. As Xiao explains, “The design is generated based on people’s sensorial stimulation and behavioral demands.” The lights are controlled by a mobile app that allows you to control the intensity, color, direction as well as height of the illumination and creates a comfy atmosphere.
