Bling With The Unit

Bling With The Unit

Excuse me, but diamonds are no longer anyone’s best friend; bags are! Given the kind of investments we do – the latest laptop, tablet, smartphone and portable music device; the sum of all purchases at times exceeds the cost of the solitaire on my finger. It’s only logical that investments in portables that take care of our precious gadgets are given more importance. Swedish Group Unit Portables is house dedicated to this cause and we welcome them to this side of the Atlantic with an open embrace.

The Italian Made Rizoma 77/011

The Italian Made Rizoma 77/011

Why do bikes have to be this sexy? The Rizoma 77/011 makes me rethink my main mode of transport. Love the sleek design, and that’s carbon fiber btw – aluminum only plays accent here. With the number of growing urban bicyclists, I’m not surprised designers are paying more attention to design and functionality that plays well inside the urban jungle. The most unique feature is switching from a single speed fixed wheel to a fixed-gear. All this through an ingenious rear wheel equipped with two pulleys to freely choose from.

No Frills Coffee Table

No Frills Coffee Table

Designed with simplicity in mind, the Kitara table features clean lines and straightforward construction that make it an excellent addition to a variety of living space styles. Composed of just 2 white glossy glass surfaces, a few metal screws, and a blend of natural and painted wood pieces, the table is flat-pack ready and super easy to assemble. It’s minimal with a touch of industrial style, perfect for the minimalist living room.

Lighting Exposed

Lighting Exposed

The Surfaces lamp is unlike any other in that it doesn’t hide its construction or wiring. Instead, it flaunts it! Similar to how you’d hang a picture frame, the minimal, lightweight design can be attached to a wall simply by hanging it on a nail or screw, making it easily moveable. Hang it, plug it, tap it, and go!

Finally, iPhone Movies!

Finally, iPhone Movies!

The iPhone is good for a lot of things, but movies… not so much! The Big Screen concept enhances the video capabilities of the iPhone by using a thin Fresnel lens at the front to magnify whatever is playing on the screen. The angle of the device instantly positions the phone and screen at a comfortable viewing angle. Even though touch screen functionality is disabled, side openings provide access to the volume and home buttons.

Beware The Sharky

Beware The Sharky

Move aside JAWS, we have a more helpful shark here to ensure correct posture and aid better sitting. Basically Sharky is a ‘cross leg stopper’ that can be used both the ways. When placed on the chair, it makes sure you don’t end up crossing your legs unconsciously. Flip it up to use as a table and a cross-leg stopper. Research says that prolonged leg crossing can lead to joint pains at the knees and the hips. Like they say, better to befriend Sharky than be sorry!

Avoiding The Drench

Avoiding The Drench

Imagine getting soaked by a car-splash, on your way to work or an important meeting. I’ve been through it one too many times thanks to the heavy monsoons my city experiences. The Rain Shield offers a shield-like umbrella and is crafted with a single curved steel wire and a telescopic rod. It has no pointed ends or sharp edges, and it won’t blow inside out in windy conditions. Sounds too good to be true!

Magic Monolith

Magic Monolith

It takes a lot to pull off using plexiglass in furniture design, but Peter Koren is doing it RIGHT with the leviTABLE! Using crystal-clear plexiglass, the legs are near-invisible, giving the illusion that the solid walnut slab top is floating effortlessly in the air. This levitated monolith is sure to be a head-turner!

Dead Heads Up!

Dead Heads Up!

I know Halloween is over, but we just had to feature this creative casket design! The Head-UP coffin is an exploration in both structure and ritual that was adapted for the classic resting position. With a slight tilt in the middle, the striking shape is simultaneously modern and elegant.  Composed entirely of wood (including the fastening components), it is also 100% degradable for those concerned with being green even after they’re gone!

Hot Hatch

Hot Hatch

I love me a hatchback and I love me a Tesla! The Tesla C captures the brand’s unique design language in a forward-thinking 2-door city car that lives up to the original’s sporting intentions. Features include an all-glass top, motorized oversize side doors that slide toward the front rather than swing open and an electric motor/lithium-ion battery system for sporty performance without sporty emissions. Aesthetically, it’s in line with Tesla’s modern design direction and would be a perfect addition to their limited line of roadsters and sedans.

Are You Flexible To Grate?

Are You Flexible To Grate?

The Flexita is a simple kitchen tool that makes food grating a whole lot easier. It transforms from two to three dimensions and is efficient to clean and store. It simply flattens when not in use and molds into a handy grip when needed. Crafted from harmonic steel, the metal that has a ‘memory’ and returns to its original flat shape after bending.

Wanna Break Free!

Wanna Break Free!

The Free Socket is a clever design that marries the multi-tap, extension cord and USB socket into one convenient package. Basically it is a wall mounted electricity outlet that unhooks and can be used as a power extension. Keeping up with the current trends, USB charging is integrated into the plate and this is very clever. I love the practical aspect of the design and the fact that this design is do-able.
