The Future is… in Boston : IDSA’s 2012 International Conference

Most designers I know are gearing up for the 2012 International Conference hosted by IDSA. The little snippet of surprise this year is the poster competition being held on the sidelines. The winner gets one complimentary registration; 4-night’s paid accommodation and a brand new iPad! Sweet deal, considering the well-acclaimed Syd Mead will be delivering the keynote address.

Inside-out Printer

Inside-out Printer

Thanks to concept design, our perception of a printer has stretched from a circular body to over-the-edge box. The idea is to break conventional norms and do something radically different yet respecting the boundaries of ‘form beyond function’. The Eclipse-dual Printer is a step in this direction and it aims at revealing the process of printing and scanning, rather than concealing it.

Visual Headphones

Visual Headphones

Keeping with the late trend of bold headphone designs, the Amazing Headphone features an added visual element on one side. Now the music can be “seen” by others through a full-color display that can be customized to the user’s liking. A color spectrum sound graph, light wave, and sequenced flares are just a few of the options that will move to the sound of your jams.

Doodle Desk

Doodle Desk

I hate to admit it, but my desk is littered with post-it notes and random scribbles on pieces of paper. Until I fully utilize the capability of my digital calendar I could really use a desk design like this. “My Desk” by Miguel Mestre is more like a giant notepad on 4 legs! A thick tablet of 100cm X 70cm sheets of paper acts as the surface- each sheet is completely at your disposal to write all your thoughts and memos on! Genius!

For a Change It’s HTC!

For a Change It’s HTC!

We have seen very few HTC concepts being dished out, so this HTC Droid Incredible 3 Concept is a refreshing change. It soothes our senses with some strong angles and refined sleek looks. In Cesar’s words, “The story behind my concept is that in this version, the Droid Incredible has grown so powerful thanks to its internal components, such as quad-core processors and 4G LTE connectivity, that the hardware cannot ‘restrain’ this power anymore, hence the ‘broken’ back plate and front panel.”

Outside-In Umbrella

Outside-In Umbrella

Umbrellas can be incredibly useful for keeping you dry… until you close it and the thing ends up soaking you itself because it’s wet! This clever twist of the classic form turns inside-out when you’re not using it, keeping the wet surface away so you stay dry when you make it in from the rain!

Time is Money

Time is Money

I’m not sure if we’ll see a universal currency in our lifetime, and if we do it will probably be in a digital form. Either way, hopefully it will be as thoughtful as this design, a literal interpretation of Benjamin Franklin’s famous phrase, “Time is Money.” Each coin and bill in the series represent a universally understood segment of time and serve as a reminder that time really is the most valuable commodity.

Headphones You Can Sleep In

Headphones You Can Sleep In

Finally- a headphone design so comfy you’ll barely feel them! The REM headphones feature an elongated shape that disperses pressure along the outer ear and can be custom fitted instantaneously by squeeze-pumping air into each soft, silicon piece. Even the squishy cord was designed to let the user wear the phones in comfort for extended amounts of time without soreness.

Personal Pod

Personal Pod

The only word that describes traffic aptly is: BAD! Try this, ask your friend, partner or just anyone who uses a car…’how’s the traffic’, and like a chorus you will get only one reply: B A D. So what is the solution, do we buy fewer cars or use only public transportation? The debate and perceptions are endless! Till we come up with something concrete lets think about personalized commuting, where a traveler uses individual pods. The Folding Electric Vehicle is what I’m talking about.

Smarter Handwash

Smarter Handwash

Given the current trend of adding electronics to our basic bathing needs like digital controls for the bathtubs and showers; it only makes sense to take it a step further and include it on fittings. Sma Wash is a digitalized faucet that dispenses soap and water in a very unique fashion. I love the play on design and how the water is expected to literally ‘fan’ out. To be honest, the whole touchscreen and automatic era is upon us to encourage cleaner loos and support the gadget freaks! Me included!

Personal Chef at Your Fingertips!

Personal Chef at Your Fingertips!

I love to cook, but am terrible at making a thorough grocery list. A lot of the products I buy end up going to waste because my recipes are incomplete! I happen to be the ideal candidate for a device like the Electrolux Sous-Chef Digital Tablet! It helps you find your recipes, automatically creates a list of the necessary groceries, and will even help you prepare the meal step-by-step!
