THE BOX “quadracycle,” as designers James Brooks and Richard Bone refer to it, is aimed at providing an inexpensive, easy to maintain, ride-sharing solution in metropolitan areas. Stripped of everything except the basic interior necessities, BOX is similar in size to a Smart Car and weighs only 750 pounds, but it can pack up to 4 people with all that extra room. It can even accommodate wheel-chair users who currently account for a large proportion of society that cannot utilize ride sharing.

The Spiral Burner is quite a nifty design that reminds me of mosquito coils that we get here in India! The plot behind this design to have a burner that saves fuel when using small utensils, conversely increase fuel efficiency when using big pots. The knobs are simple and the burner boasts clean lines, I think I’m already in love with it! Oh my!

I’d much rather get hit by a car than pay my dentist a visit! The noise of the drill machine and the sterile probes are good enough to freak me out. Hence this Tooth Guardian is a good way to keep a check on my teeth cleaning routine and ensure that I don’t need any dentists. The high-tech toothbrush integrates a camera and UV system to monitor and display photographs of one’s teeth while cleaning. Basically, the camera helps you thoroughly clean your teeth and the UV light sterilizes the brush. So far it all sounds good!

From 2×4 wall studs to plastic light switches, common American construction tends to use predictable, albeit utilitarian materials, methods, and dimensions. Peter Bristol’s American Standards Lamp is a clever nod to this archetype that derives its character directly from this set of rules but also stands alone as a modern icon that is both familiar and intuitive to the user… that is, if you’re American!

I’m loving this bronze cutlery by designer Maximilian Löw. The set combines elegant, soft curves similar to that of classic cutlery with sharp, rigorous edges that give it modern, masculine appeal. For each piece, a 3D model was created so that different variations could be built using CNC technology. After the ergonomic & aesthetic requirements were achieved, preperations for the bronze casting process were made. The result: stark yet elegant tableware in high polished bronze that deserves to be shown off.

The Bell & Bell pair of salt and pepper shakers are a modern take on the classic, reminiscent of the antiquated but familiar dinner handbell. Simply twist the bottom section to line up the marks and shake away! (Just don’t expect anyone to come running at your service.)

The Urban Hotel is a very well thought-out solar-powered ‘green’ hotel. It features rainwater recycling system and a bicycle in each room, to help visitors explore the city. Now the cool thing here is that there is a specific slot in the room to place the bike and you can use it as an exercise cycle. Stored kinetic energy from it gets converted to electricity and helps power small gadgets and lights. If you get enthusiastic enough, for all you know, you could end up renting the room for free! Apparently all your pedaled miles get converted to energy savings and can be redeemed against the room rent. Sweet!

The team at in square lab noticed that the Historical Pushinsky Cinema is in need of a major facelift- one that will not only reinvigorate the architecture but also one that will revitalize its presence as a focal point of central Moscow. Their corian & glass recladding proposal is seen as a solid cellular structure that grows, at first scarcely from the square onto the steps & then gradually covering parts of the facade, constantly revealing glimpses of the building’s history.

For 350 years the Unversitylibrary Breman has organized and structured information to make it accessible to visitors. As you can imagine, the library has been witness to the incredible evolution of information sharing from paper to digital. To celebrate, this installation titled Wandern im Wissen (Wandering in Knowledge) serves as a representation of the endless flow of shared thought over the years.
