Lone (as in 1)

Lone (as in 1)

Lone is a Midi controller stripped back to its simplest form: a single knob! This handcrafted knob is for the musician that doesn’t require a large set up for a performance and is perfect for mapping and controlling single inputs. Its aim is to bring a sense of personality to an object that is often complex and mechanical, giving it a new interpretation through craft and aesthetic while maintaining its musical functionality.

Lil'bitty Light Sensor

Lil’bitty Light Sensor

Access to a good light meter can make or a break a photo, but the designs are often bulky, archaic in user-friendliness, and expensive. The Lumu light meter is reduced to the size of the round sensor, eliminating the need for a separate handheld device. Instead, it works with your smartphone using a dedicated app for taking luminance measurements with a spectral response sensor that works like the human eye. Why not, since you already have your phone with you?!

Hyper Vehicle for the Senses

Hyper Vehicle for the Senses

The Koenigsegg Prestera was designed with one purpose in mind… thrills! Inspired by extreme sports, the vehicle triggers the driver’s adrenaline with a dynamic carving and shifting weight balance system that creates stability in turns and exhilaration in the driver’s seat. Tucked in the cockpit, the driving experience is closer to that of riding a motorcycle or even a horse. This creates a deep connection between driver and machine where even the smallest movements are shared.

iMessaging With iBackpack

iMessaging With iBackpack

Love the idea of owning the iBackpack, a simple communicating tool for cyclists. The backpack features a transparent window through which your tablet (aka iPad) can be seen. It syncs in with your Smartphone via Bluetooth and using a special app, you can let the world know if you are going to be taking a right or a left turn. The Smartphone doubles up as a rearview mirror and relays info like break signal or emoticons and messages to the tablet.

Earphones With A Play

Earphones With A Play

The Freestyler earphone incorporates a very fun element to their design. A part of this earphone is made out of special coated wire that can be easily twisted and turned into a shape. This means you can easily store them or wear them in-ear. The special wire in the middle is for clipping to the collar or the pocket. You can bend it to really cool shapes! Kawaii!

Instinctual Architecture

Instinctual Architecture

Challenged by a long list of regulations and zoning codes, the Vail House in the hilly Los Angeles neighborhood of Silverlake manages to make the most of the unique terrain and city views. While such challenges often result in drab, boring architecture, Brooks + Scarpa Architects achieves the opposite with this awesomely abstract twisted box that is seemingly a part of rather than “apart from” the natural landscape.

Urban Cyclist's Dream Come True

Urban Cyclist’s Dream Come True

While many folding helmets are designed with a number of complex hard-folds from front to back, this twist on the safety solution is collapsible down the middle. An origami-like system of honeycomb folds compress from left to right, making it just slightly wider than a medium-size book and slim enough to carry in a backpack with room to spare. Simply stretch it out to the appropriate size and throw it on to protect your noggin!

Electrolux Design Lab 20 Semi Finalists 2013

Electrolux Design Lab 20 Semi Finalists 2013

It is always a pleasure to chat with Electrolux Design Director and Head of Jury, Thomas Johansson and this Monday our conversation on Google Hangout was exceptional. Besides discussing the obvious – this years phenomenal entries to the Electrolux Design Lab, we got talking about the typical use of appliances in an Indian household. He was surprised to know that a majority don’t use dishwashers and we still prefer hand-washed clothes to the washing-machined ones! In any case, without further ado, let me announce the Electrolux Design Lab 20 Semi Finalists For 2013.
