The cone shape has always been a natural one for sound enhancement and projection. From the early days of circus hosts announcing some daring feat of high-wire acrobatics, to riot police announcing their intention to crack your skull open for having an opinion… good times. The cone is probably the first and best idea in sound delivery.

Designer Joonas Saaranen must have been inspired by some hard partying because his B.A. degree work resulted in the Reppo II - an urban hardshell backpack with built-in speakers. Nevermind that boomboxes are the bane of public spaces. Let’s just focus on how cool this is. No matter where you go, music’s got your back.

The Natural Radio concept is a bit convoluted in its approach changing volume and frequency. Instead of dials or buttons, it uses a scale. By placing stones on either sides of the scale, you have organic control over radio. Functionality isn’t really the idea here. This is clearly an attempt to humanize a device that pretty much revolutionized communication. Can you image how many stones you’d have to pack on to get the right volume.

One of the biggest issues with USB peripherals is the protruding nature of any design. From a Bluetooth adaptor to the tiniest of Flash Memory Drives, they all stick out like a sore thumb(drive). This issue with these protrusions is not just aesthetics, but function. USB peripherals are constantly being accidentally ripped out, knocked off or jammed into your computer causing not only damage to the external item but the computer’s USB plug itself.

Designer Kyle Cherry has envisaged a new type of computer with creatives in mind. Called simply “Canvas”, the computer is designed to increase the quality and productivity of the designer or artist. It is intended to allow a user with little or no experience to make the switch from traditional to digital workflows by building the system around a more familiar interface. This concept should even make Wacom Clinq owners jealous.

As concepts go, most designs stand on their own merit and need nothing else to exist for them to hopefully one day go into production. Then there are the more rare concept designs that are completely dependent on yet other concepts to be created in order for the first to exist. Got that? So now that we got that out of the way, check out the “DesCom” by Sung-kyu Nam. Completely dependent on the existence of a giant Samsung media centric laptop computer, this desk beautifully and simply integrates the computer (almost) seamlessly into the desktop surface.

So here’s a laptop concept called “Float Away” that addresses one of the most bothersome aspects of mobile computing - heat. Designer Young Hwan Kim has a simple solution for it. Elevate the back end by integrating a lift bar into the design. Now heat can dissipate into the air keeping your laptop cool and possibly extending its life.

Mommie’s breast milk is still the best solution for a baby’s health but dang it those rascals hurt mommies sometimes with their teething. Breast pumps have been around for awhile but this one take the cake in terms of design and even function. Besides looking slick, the nozzle pivots since nipples are in (eh hem) different places. What’s really interesting (kinda scary too) are the 3 suction settings. Am I the only one thinking what the highest setting feelings like?

Check out this concept mobile phone called the Mooon+. One too many “o’s” in there but I appreciate the clean design. It’s got that big gorgeous touchscreen, sleek design, sexy metal accents, and a digital camera. So what’s the big deal right? The mouth piece detaches and turns into a bluetooth headset. Ooh snap, I love it!
