This One’s for Mr. Rams

For reasons best known to them Braun hasn’t yet re-entered the entertainment segment. For the moment it’s just appliances, grooming & healthcare products and design competitions from their end. So if they were to venture into the entertainment market, how do you think their speakers or an iPod docking station be? Tim Wieland has a fair view of how he’d like them to shape their speakers + dock and I think it’s very Dieter Rams.

Headphone or Speaker? You choose!

Headphone or Speaker? You choose!

Designed by Lu Chieh Hua, Headphone or Speaker combines the lightweight mobility of headphones with the sound amplification of a speaker into a single unit that makes it possible to both listen to your music privately or share with others. A unique twisting mechanism allows the unit to be propped upright for directing sound and automatically shifts playing modes and volume between operations, transforming it from headphone to speaker in a flash.

Looking As Loud As It Is

Looking As Loud As It Is

The Levitating Superconductor Speakers by James Coleman has got to be one of the coolest I’ve seen! The concept works by housing a superconducting element inside a transducer, which can be suspended in a superdiamagnetic field by an electromagnet. Changing the electromagnetic field strength will cause the transducer to oscillate, which will impart sound directly into the air. Crossing my fingers that superconducting technology advances quickly because I want both the black/gold and blue/silver versions!

Modulating The iPhone Sound

Modulating The iPhone Sound

The Air Module is a very simple speaker design that requires no power supply! Yea, you got that right! It has a rubber brake, wood and ceramic system that allows it to modulate sound. Have a look at the pictures inside and you will know what I mean. So basically the module just envelops your iPhone (or any other device) and pipes out the music in rhythm. Cool!

360º of Sound

360º of Sound

I’m sure from the looks of it, you could decipher how the Bell Tweeter works. Sound radiates 360º from the cone. Change the volume by spinning the body. There are some definite advantages to this setup over the traditional ones, namely being able to evenly fill a room with sound. With multiple bells, one could easily adapt their current setup to accommodate audio delivered in every direction.

Music Bell

Music Bell

Glocke is a unique cradle for an MP3 player and is inspired by the Korean Buddhist Bell. The bell works on the principle of resonance and amplifies sound, spreading its outreach. So when you dock the MP3 player on this device, it amplifies the low sound using the glass cylinder and glossy plastic body to full effect. The LED lamps are cute and glow according to the volume of the music…simply magnificent!

Cute Miki Ears

Cute Miki Ears

Ear MIKI is a very cute ring that helps you manage your phone and earbuds in one go. Simply pull out the earplugs from one end and hook up to the phone/music device from the line. When not in use, slip the ring around your finger, like a cool accessory. The earbuds retract into the hub and give the Mickey effect. Sweet!

Sexy Sound Box

Sexy Sound Box

The Sound Box is more than just a docking station for your iPad (or iPod); it is a radio and alarm clock with integrated hard drive to store your music. I love the super simple and sexy vase-styled wireless speakers. They blend into the room so perfectly. Touchscreen controls and intuitive interface are a given, what’s hot is the minimalist style that is so in-line with Apple products.

Apt For Apple

Apt For Apple

One of the definitions for good design is to remove the unnecessary, and this is exactly what the Minus 1 Speakers Dock for Smartphones is all about. The focus is on ‘making sound’ which is faithful to the natural function of a speaker, rather than obtrusive designing. A natural flow of elements and fluid sound! I’m enthralled.

Dieter Rams Would Be Proud

Dieter Rams Would Be Proud

Minimalism is really a tough art to master. The balance between function and aesthetics is beautifully achieved in these two products. A clock/radio in which the speaker and LED display share the same surface. The aluminium case gives the product a timeless appeal and material quality rarely found today. The slim proportions of this wireless speaker, resembling those of a book, allow it to sit unobtrusively on a shelf or table top. The speaker seamlessly connects to a smart phone or music player to transmit phone calls and music wirelessly.

Apple Peripherals Don't Have to Look Apple

Apple Peripherals Don’t Have to Look “Apple”

The Kanto Morph speakers were originally designed by Alp Germaner for a competition but he missed the fine print about it being a “skin design” only and so it was relegated to languish in the dark corners of his hard drive – that is, until we got our hands on it. Look, for once it’s a design not about nostalgia. It’s not ostensibly minimalistic and it’s contemporary. Yes it’s an iPhone/iPod dock but who says all Apple peripherals have to look like Cupertino designed them? I applaud his aberrant design choices.

Is it a Megaphone?

Is it a Megaphone?

The ‘Megaphones’ appear to be an eponym but they’re actually speakers. One of the ideas behind the Megaphones was to bring back “nobility” to the object: let’s replace the cheap electronics with hi-fi components. Let’s replace the plastic with wood but let’s keep the iconic shape. The final product is unique and has a distinct Dutch quality to it. Love the craftsmanship.
