Musical Deja Vu All Over Again

Way back in history, humans used to stretch magnetized strips of a petroleum derivative and electronically infuse them with audio recordings. The original audio recording playback machine was at least the length of a football field. Until someone noticed that you could spool the “tapes” of recordings into easily potable “compact cassettes.” And it was good. In the 90s, after two failed attempts, audio recordings were being stored in Magical Playbacker 3 boxes or “MP3 Players”. And it was better.

The afterlife never sounded so good. Feeding France’s insatiable appetite for all things ancient Egyptian (Yeah, I’m talkin’ to you Napoleon!), French designer Stéphane Thivend cracked many whips to bring us the “Horus” pyramid coffee table. This Ancient Wonder is made from high performance concrete and features a powered integrated dual speaker system and iPod dock. And to further ensure a captive audience, Stéphane also included an integrated LED lighting effect with your choice of 24 Pharaoh approved colors.

Now designers Min-guk Ji & Hong-joo Kim & In-oh Yoo & for Metatrend Institute have invented what could be the greatest music accessory since the groupie. The “Transparent OLED Headphones” (working title I’m assuming) are made from flexible OLED panels that allow the user to custom design a lighting show or patterns across your cranium.

Hallucinating Player Hovers

The Melody Balloon is on its own trip, and by this I mean it flies, floats, hovers…whatever! While it’s on trip to la la land, the player stays grounded thanks to the earbuds fixed into your ears. Silly as this may sound to some, but children these days find no pleasure in the helium filled balloons, this Melody Balloon is more their types. Kinda like their RC planes, only this one’s flight and play are controlled via the finger ring that it comes with. Conventional folks may want to keep this rooted to the battery recharger.

Touchtable is a PMP that is interactive and intuitive. It features a large controller wheel that surrounds the screen and performs just like a turntable. It’s even sensitive to touch and pressure and when you use it in combo with the surrounding function buttons, it facilitates absolute user control over a track, through precise position, timing and pitch manipulation.

Flexio is this really awesome radio that’s solar powered and portable. I’m willing to overlook the “only one fixed FM channel” stand for the cute little paper packaging it comes in. I’m sure the dynamics of manufacturing this are going to be reasonable, because one can even use it for promotions and gifts…like ask someone to advertise on its package. The innovative factor comes from the flexible speaker & flexible solar cell. It’s designed to be used within the station-waves range, but could be modified to receive internet radio via WiFi or WiMax.

A common misconception about the hearing impaired is their inability to experience the joy of music. They may not hear and process sound audibly but they certainly can feel it. In fact, studies have shown the sense of touch is heightened allowing them to perceive music in a totally different way. SOUNZZZ is a visual, audio, tactile MP3 player designed for the hearing impaired but universal enough for all to enjoy.

Tanker That’s All Rolly

On the lines of the pet Rolly by Sony is the Mint Tank Music Player. It’s the sorts that follows you around, obeys your commands and doesn’t complain if you ignore it. Features include USB connectivity, Bluetooth, WiFi, 2 High Output Speakers, Remote Control and endless track system to follow you around. When two tanks are within the same vicinity, they kind of communicate with each other and playback music with 3-D sound effects. Quite an awesome pet!

Quack Quack! Ok I won’t kid around this time, but I think Mac Funamizu has matured pretty much in his design sensibilities. The CD player is called Quackie, but the concept looks decent enough for the tweens who endorse stuff like the Mickey Mouse MP3 players. Quackie is thus: There’s a round body that rolls and a black speaker. The speaker is attached to the body at the axis and it rolls around the body. Simple functions of play/stop/next/back and volume up/down are included.
