Steampunk Rotary Smartphone in Digital Era!

Steampunk Rotary Smartphone in Digital Era!

Is there space for old school guises in the digital revolution? I think there is, which is why steampunk is alive. Settling the Digital v/s Mechanical dispute with his Rotary Mechanical Smartphone, designer Richard Clarkson gives us a smartphone that is so very tangible that its aura speaks for itself! Stalling the ‘digital-take-over’, the phone features two interchangeable brass dials, a true rotary dial and a button dial. WHats really clever is that the act of changing these is inspired from changing the lenses on a camera!

The Tyme of Your CPU Life

The Tyme of Your CPU Life

You’ve got your finger still on the steampunk world, that ever-so-pretty subculture embraced wholeheartedly by these friendly internets. YD’s posted their fair share of steampunk stuff, and that tradition of love for it continues right this very moment. The “Woodguy” contacted us and rung our ears off with his excellent new covers for iMacs. Covers? Why that’s madness, you say, only PC computers can have a new level of design on top, Apple computers are already perfect, aren’t they? No way, no way at all! What they need is more wood.

It's A Portable Talking Box

It’s A Portable Talking Box

Designer Bill Gould hates mobile phones but broke down and bought one. Amused at the thought, his coworkers asked for a picture and Mr. Gould came up with the Edi-Mobile concept as a joke. With a background in Industrial Archeology, he designed a phone Edison would have loved. The crank initiates the call and there’s a slide out numeric keypad, but the best bit is the 50 lb lead battery required to operate it. Unlimited text messaging not included.

For The Love Of Steampunk

For The Love Of Steampunk

It’s tough keeping a track on futuristic iterations of computers, so backtracking into the forgotten era sometimes spring up surprises. This retro-steampunk gem is a customized work of art which uses lots of wood and a good measure of brass to get in the right effects. As the designers put it “These custom-made keyboards, framed monitors and computers are completely functional, but with a 19th century/ steampunk aesthetic.”

Steampunk PC, Oh So Retro!

Steampunk PC, Oh So Retro!

Did you notice the sudden retro wave that’s hit most ID designers? It’s like they’ve gone nostalgic and strung an emotional cord with gadgets from the past. The Philco PC here is a prime example of such inspirations, totally reminiscent of the 1954 design classic Philco Predicta! Indulge in it for the aesthetic value, as for the specs…yea it does host Windows 7. But then again we’re here for the love of design, specs can take a hike for the moment!

Skate Shortens Your Commute, Possibly Life Span

Skate Shortens Your Commute, Possibly Life Span

There are certain gadgets that are simply too cool not to do something dangerous with. Case in point, “Skate” from Matteo Gentile adds an electric motor to a stripped down hybrid of a skateboard and snowboard bindings, creating something altogether different, dangerous and cool. Ostensibly created for regular transport and short commutes, I think we all know what was going through Matteo’s mind when he sketched this bad boy out.

Steam Punk 101

Steam Punk 101

As you can imagine, we here at Yanko Design see just about every type of design the creative mind can conjure. Most of us were not there during the birth of such monumental movements like Bauhaus, Art Nouveau or even Post Modernism. Maybe once in a lifetime we are lucky enough to be there at the genesis of a whole new design movement. Until that day arrives, we would like to take a moment to highlight some interesting sub-genres of design we have been admiring with delight. One in particular is the era inspired, fanboy based “Steampunk” movement.
