In this project, designer HoDong Sung took on the task of redesigning a two thousand year old shoe. A shoe design, I should say, not a old rotten shoe. The Bio Mituri is the 2009 re-design of the traditional Mituri straw shoe from Korea. Reducing pollution and increasing style points at the same time! Enjoy this and Sung’s fantastic industrial design travels and shoe-history in real sneaker comfort!

First let me tell you a tiny bit about HoDong Sung. Born and raised in Seoul, South Korea where vivid memories spring forth of low eco standards in high-quality athletic footwear factories (this was in the 1980s.) From there, Sung spent time developing industrial design skills in super-eco-clean Australia. Then Sung was a footwear designer for Nike in Oregon, USA. Then on to Adidas in Herzogenaurach, Germany.

This path, along with the changing and ever-greening times, Sung began designing an eco-friendly no-performance-sacrificed set of shoes. For the Bio Mituri the “main idea is combining Korean traditional Mituri upper design with western developed sole structure, which is the perfect marriage of natural material with ergonomics.”

A. Mituri twisted straw replaced with bamboo yarn for durability, eco-friendliness. (Anti-bacterial, non-allergenic)

B. Mituri adjustability improved upon with new upper structure with a string system that wraps top, bottom, heel together all at once.

C. Mituri weak points done away with using biodegradable foam midsole. This sole biodegrades 50 times faster than the average shoe.

D. Production reduction (combining toe cap, heel counter, insole, and midsole in to one injection-molded midsole) minimizes CO2 emissions. Also has recycled tire outsole.

E. Glue used to connect outsole and midsole is water-based cement, avoiding chemical bonds that pollute.

Designer: HoDong SUNG

Nike is renowned the world over for their running shoes so when the LunarGlide+ racked up award after award for product design, I got interested. I’ve never been a runner so this was a golden opportunity to get my feet wet. Thanks so much to Kasey and Demetria for hooking up the sneaks. Hit the jump for my review.

One of the key features of the LunarGlide+ is the cushioning support Nike calls Dynamic Support System. The tech comprises of Nike’s ultra cushy LunarLite foam core providing support for both neutral and pronate runners. The “+” denotation indicates compatibility with the Nike+ iPod kit.

With my textile background, I easily recognized the tried-and-true materials of choice for footwear. Mesh uppers and microfiber layers provide exceptional support and are incredibly breathable. They also stretch quite a bit since feet tend to expand once the pavement pounding starts. The rear outsole is made of hard rubber which is perfect for me since I overpronate. The outside corners of my shoes always wear out first so it’s nice to see Nike has mastered this aspect without weighing down the shoe. The LunarGlide+ weighs a scant 10.6 oz.

I took out a whole month to use the shoe. It doesn’t come with the Nike+ iPod kit but a quick visit to the Apple store and a fresh pair of crew socks and I was ready to go. It is extremely comfortable, like air and with every step I felt some artificial spring. At times it gave me the forward momentum I needed while simultaneously cushioning my feet. If I didn’t know better I’d swear there was some sort of gel pad in there but no, it’s the LunarLite foam. It does it job very well.

That’s the real key behind all the accolades. It’s extremely lightweight, encompasses the latest Nike tech, combines great design and priced right in the middle of Nike’s range. In my month of everyday use, the shoe still looks new. The inner and outsole are intact and the foam cushioning hasn’t deteriorated one bit. At $100 it’s a bargain. I have continued to run even after my review. The shoe has converted me so that’s one more accolade the LunarGlide+ can add to the trophy cabinet.

About 15 years ago, a fashion designer exhibited a line of clothes that folded into books. It was a new paradigm for dressing. I can’t for the life of me remember his name but the Minimax concept by Marc Illan triggered a flashback when I was inspired to study the math and art behind origami. The “foldable shoe” idea, tho not original, is explored really well here. A simple urban slip-on that looks great. There are advantages for both consumers and retailers from being able to fold it flat for storage. It’s a reduction in material waste and packaging. Brills!

Being a hardcore Urbanite, I don’t think I really appreciate the need for really dry shoes. Not that it doesn’t rain in my city; we do get our fair share of monsoons, but it’s just that I can’t fathom the need for a specialized drier for my shoes. On the other hand folks who tend to spend much time outdoors (like farmers) and work in damp environments would really value the Windry Boot Drier. This device works by directing air into the boot, accelerating the evaporation of moisture, thus drying the gumboots pronto.

Windry also uses a Venturi effect to promote air movement within the boot’s dead end space (the toe) and this is created by the air movement over the top of the product. When trials where conducted, the design proved effective in drying out the shoes in “subtle outdoor breezes and indoors with a cold fan or electric fan heater.”

Lemme explain how this works, place Windry into the gumboots, the hooded design on the top redirects the air into the gumboot, thus airing and drying it quickly.

Windry is made from HDPE plastic and is 100% recyclable; moreover it’s a single piece without any moving parts. It operates effectively in the natural wind without the need of an electrical input.

I’ll keep this straight forward. This shoe is the result from a collaboration between renowned architect Zaha Hadid and Brazilian fashion label Melissa. As with any Zaha Hadid design, the sweeping conundrums are rightly apparent and I hate it. It took Hadid 2 years to come up with this? I’m aware those organic arcs hug the foot perfectly but whenever architects try to create fashion, they birth deconstructive genius like Rae Kawakubo or total disasters like this concoction.

The shoe comes in black, charcoal grey, green, yellow, silver, white and purple colorways; available in Australia May 2009 (a-hem Shane). If you live outside Aussieland, hit up the Melissa website to order online.

Any fashionista knows expensive heels and water do not go together. If durability weren’t such an issue, I’m sure you’d rock those blahniks daily. SWIMS, a Scandinavian company known for making stylish galoshes just released the City Slipper high heel. Like the other SWIMS products, the design of the City Slipper is simple and beautiful and in line with company’s Scandanavian heritage. In addition, the design incorporates lots of great details both for practical and aesthetic reasons.

Extra traction for slippery surfaces.

The sole of each CitySlipper has the map of either New York, Paris or Tokyo.

Pull on/off grip and the soft siliconpad on the sides makes it very convenient.

Flexible design to fit almost any heel height and thickness due to flexible material and construction.

Protection for the delicate leather/suede sole of your shoe and the tip of the shoe against the elements.

Low-Cut style is for shoes with bows and buckles.

No we are not talking about saving horny horses or Richard Gere circa 1980. “Cleatskins” are basically Crocs with a friggin’ purpose other than to offend those with taste. Intended as a quick slip on protector for athletic shoes used in football, futball, baseball and golf. Greatly extending the lifespan of the spikes, cleats or studs found on the bottom of all these shoes. They also help to keep dirt and grass from tracking into your car or home. Made from SKINTEK rubber, a formulation of compression molded rubber, and come in two designs – pull-over and slip-on. They come in tons of team matching colors and will retail for about 35 US green backs. Remember: my favorite sporting teams are always better than yours. Go Team!

WENGER – makers of the Swiss Army Knife brand have expanded once into many arenas including time pieces, apparel, home cutlery and luggage. Well they added one more tool to their multi-functional portfolio. Their new line of casual/athletic shoes just might turn out to be a new addition to my lust list. Their first few designs are sleek, minimal and tastefully adorned with the Swiss Army logo. Hard to stay neutral over.

What is it about high heels that make women weak in the knees (other than it makes women literally weak in the knees)? Oh right, I remember now, high heels are HOT! So what is a girl to do when she leaves with her office in boring flats and wants to show off her stems? Get herself up to speed with this adjustable heel shoes called “Goodie 2 Shoes” by designer Natalie Thorne. The height transition is made possible by a quick and easy male and female peg system secured by strong magnets and a hidden hinge. But wait, there’s more! The whole look and feel of the shoe can be altered by the interchangeable plastic uppers. These customisable uppers are attached using snap fixings, which allows them to be easily clipped on and off, replacing them with uppers of different shapes, colours and styles. And if that were not enough, she will even throw in a pair of ginsu knives for free! Act now.
