Kid’s Drum-able Desk

This brilliantly colored table by designer Carlos Pendas is a whimsical kid’s desk that uses tensed fabric as a surface rather than an ordinary hard top. The stretched fabric also doubles as a drum for an added touch of fun and interaction. Hangoo’s simple assembly can be completed in minutes and is so easy that even kids can participate in the process. Using stretched fabric reduces the overall weight, and a minimal amount of components means this design is cost efficient in both material and shipment.

Linda Allen, interior designer turned lighting designer, noticed a hole in the market for portable, cordless lamps, and decided to take things into her own hands. Her first line of lamps, the Live Anywhere collection, features a series of attractive lamps that are not only portable and cordless, but also rechargeable, multi-setting, and weather resistant. To perfect the enduring design, Allen created a customized battery system and special long-lasting light bulb for the collection. The lamps, named Ava, Corra, Persia, Seraphina, & Eleanora are a great outdoor lighting addition with a feminine touch.

I’m for real. Designer Joey Roth made a Felt Mouse. I first heard about it last year and instantly loved the idea. It isn’t until now that Joey is showing the world the first prototype. It took that long to overcome the limitations of felt but from the looks of it, this prototype is pretty much ready for production. I LOVE Joey’s disciplined execution of minimalism. See it May 13th in the “USE ME” exhibit by the American Design Club which coincides with this year’s ICFF show in New York.

The Snail is a Braille reader that works smooth as silk on a surface that’s predictably bumpy! It can record the text as it reads for future playback and it even syncs with a Bluetooth headset so the visually impaired can listen to the book without disturbing others. Features like kinetic recharging and pressure sensitive reading make it the ideal companion for a bookworm!

Easy Cap!

Easy Cap!

One of the things with refrigerated soda bottles is unscrewing the cap can be a bit tough. A little bit of physics applied to a cap redesign does the trick to making things easier. The teardrop shaped Easy Access Bottle Cap is perfect. I can’t see why we can’t standardize this across all bottles. It’s ergonomic and smooth. Looks kinda cool too.

I get it- the hubless wheel has yet to reach its full technical potential, but set aside your speculation for just a moment to admire this striking trike concept. Most three 3-wheelers combine the worst of motorcycles & cars: no leaning into corners, exposure to the elements, & no lane splitting- but the narrow, tilting 3-wheeled TriMove has all the agility & aerodynamic styling you’d expect from a fierce motorbike. It’s triangle footprint provides balance even when it’s not moving.

Robo-Giving

Why is it that I would trust giving my money to a cute robot before a human?  Take a look at DON-8r (pronounced donator) & you’ll see what I mean. This coin-powered fundraising robot is a friendly little guy who only needs a passer-by to chip in so he can keep moving. DON-8r is already at work in Scotland, raising money and awareness by encouraging playful and empathetic support by engaging strangers in a fun and memorable way. Designed to be rebranded to suit different charities, I can definitely see this catching on… and I’m all for it. (Does not include defense lasers or anti-theft forcefield.)

The Duga Chair

The Duga Chair

I love this modern take on a traditional form. The curvaceous Duga chair is reminiscent of the classic contours of steam molded Viennese bentwood furniture. It’s familiar shape also takes inspiration from the distinctive tubular curves and wonderful craftsmanship of vintage bicycles, making for a graceful and overall elegant design with a modern touch.

Perfect Geometric Ice Cubes

The Lékué ice cube tray creates perfect cubes of ice every time. Inspired by an industrial moulding technique, the cubes are formed at an angle to avoid the need to taper any of the faces. And here I thought ice cube trays couldn’t really evolve to improve any further. These remind me of the cubes used in TRON Legacy. Ice is so beautiful when cut to strict proportionate geometry.

Dance to Your Heart Beat

Heartbeatz is a revolution in wearable visual dance tech. Utilizing infrared reflection technology the device detects the heartbeat of its user and mimics the very movement of the blood in your veins with light via a length of Electro Luminescent wire. When listening to a song with a strong, constant bass rhythm the HeartBeatz will tune and begin to beat in time with it. The conception of Heartbeatz will allow any onlookers to be able to observe this process. When applied to a large crowd amazing patterns of light can appear throughout a club or event.

Tiny little LEDs dotting the inner realm of a lampshade, you can only imagine the mesmerizing effect it’s going to create. The LED Shade Lamp is just this; no bulbs, no holder, but a handful of twinky lights doing their thing. I love the way Peter describes it, “the shade itself becomes the source of light.”

The Cleaning Dog Squad

Before you call PETA, just hear me out. The dogs and pups involved are robotic and no animals were harmed in the making of this concept! Puppy Robotic is a vacuum cleaner consisting of a mommy dog and her litter. The mom acts as the base unit and the four pups are her cleanup crew. True to canine nature, the puppies run amok in a cleaning frenzy and at times chase remote controls or play some music.

The Acoustic Alarm

If you’re not a morning person and hate the irritating cacophony of most alarm clocks then you’ll appreciate this design by Jamie McMahon. Handcrafted from 2mm thick birch plywood, walnut, and stainless steel, the Acoustic Alarm combines aesthetic rawness and simple string-pluckin’ functionality to gently awaken the user from slumber. The alarm uses a rotational pick to pluck guitar strings and has been designed to allow the user to customize the tone of the alarm to their liking with a simple adjustment of the tuning pegs.
