The Most Organized Desk

OMG, I love this Integrated Workstation not because it is a sleek and well-organized desk, but because it integrates a very thoughtful daybed datum into the workstation typology. The desk is more than just a space to work, it provides place to charge tablets, laptops, and cell phones. It even encourages a range of postures throughout the day. The best part is that the design doesn’t take up much space. Ah, my next power nap has to be on this!

The Forty-five Degree Catch

The Forty-five Degree Catch

The traditional door catch is still being used in many countries. Although simple to use, the design has two major flaws. Because of its orientation, the catch tends to get in the way and hurt people and as a result, it bends and gets deformed. The simple solution is to change the vertical hinge to a 45° angle. This ways the moving latch hangs down flush with the door (thanks to gravity) and doesn’t come in the way.

Functional Fashion

NOTEX is a thoughtful wristband design that’s more than a funky fashion statement- it’s also a helpful tool that allows visually impaired individuals identify paper money. Designed exclusively for the people of India, the steel slap band features four kinks arranged according to the difference in the lengths of Indian rupee bills, which lack Braille or any other tactile identification. Simply snap it off and line the bills up with the end to make out the money and then snap it back on – genius!

Earthquake Art

The Quakescape 3D Fabricator was created in response to the Christchurch earthquakes by Kiwi designer James Boock. The device takes earthquake data and transfers it into art by using a scaled down landscape of Christchurch as a “blank canvas” and extrudes paint onto the exact location of the earthquake tremors – transforming the data into functional art. No Wet Pants, No Wet Seat!

Living in cities where torrential rains tend to ruin your bikes for you, I have become accustomed to staying away from them for those few months of monsoons. It’s great to hear that incessant rains in Southern China got this quartet set of designers to come up with a bicycle seat that doesn’t get wet, despite the heavy downpour. Basically the seat is created using tubes, which is a molded block of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) with a porous structure. Water simply drains through the seat, which is constructed using a carbon fiber frame.

iPhone Metal Advantage

As Andrea explains it, the Ag++ Metal Bumper for the iPhone 5 is an aluminium case shaped from a solid aerospace aluminum block by state-of-the-art CNC machinery. Needless to say the case is ultra-shock absorbing and ultra-bend and twist resistant. One of the main complaints I have heard from iPhone 5 (Black Version Only), users is the way the back case’s color scratches off. Either they have used it rough, which I doubt, or it’s an Apple thing.

Wet N Seriously Wild

This far-out concept by Jurmol Yao takes extreme watersports to an entirely new level. The design falls somewhere between a wakeboard and jet ski, with a propulsion system built directly into the bottom of the board, allowing adrenaline junkies to get serious air or even “board” underwater. How? We’re not sure exactly, but we want it… now.

Gotta love this awesome kid’s chair by Japanese design firm, h220430! The unique design was inspired by the art of Furoshiki, where all forms of an object are created by wrapping them with a single piece of cloth, and the folding art of Origami where shapes are formed by folding. Flat-pack-ready, the chair arrives as a planar piece to be folded into position by the little one, inspiring their creativity through interaction as they help it come to life! So. Effing. Cool. I need an adult size for myself ASAP!

The Brit Speaker’s Marriage

The designers of the Josiah DAB Radio and Bluetooth Speaker call their creation the marriage of British ceramic heritage from Stoke-on-Trent with the simplicity and playfulness practiced by the Soho design team. An interesting explanation for a handmade ceramic creation! Anyways, the speakers are deigned with wit and functionality and will look great right next to my Buddha plant.

Divide And View

The Always With Three is a very innovative approach to making smartphones easier to use. Most of them are now offering a decent size screen, however the multiple tasks and features that are packed make them a tad overwhelming to use. The idea here is to have three dynamic pop-up screens that expand when used in the pop-up mode. One screen is dedicated for use as a keyboard (and joystick) while the other two navigate between media player and display. Basically an expandable device, but with innovative variations!
