When the airplane is going to EXPLODE?! Or, of course, also, if the airplane is taking off or landing? Usually, strange and uncomfortable situations ensue. Would you, instead, like to be a kangaroo on an airplane? I would. Kangaroos are safe. Kangaroos have safe ways. Designer Karsten Willmann has channeled the safe ways of the kangaroo into this airplane safety device for babies.

Unsurprisingly, installing high power 500 watt lamps in your in-ground pool is a real pain and not something you want to try and ‘wing’. Circumventing the whole electricity thing is Lysandre Follet’s Ecolights which use the pre-existing flow from the filter pump to drive a small turbine and a set of LEDs. Nothing earth shattering, but a good reminder of how “ReUse” can apply to energy just as readily as the cardboard boxes you get in the mail.

Desktop virtualization is a phrase you may be hearing more of sooner than later. The idea of computing in the cloud as opposed to today’s private desktop machines isn’t new but there haven’t been many products to put idea into practice. The Pano Logic designed by Whipsaw Inc. is the first of which I’ve seen blends the beauty of minimalist design with a seamless computing experience made near identical to the computer I’m using now to type this.

LightDrops looks like an ordinary umbrella but don’t let that fool ya. There’s more than meets the eye here. As water pours over the surface, potential energy from raindrops slamming onto the conductive membrane called PDVF transforms into electrical energy powering embedded LEDs sending your umbrella ablaze with light. The heavier the rain, the brighter the light to help you see your way.

In today’s rapid consumerist society, consumption comes into question. How durable do we want our devices to be when they become near obsolete in 5 years? The source materials that make up their build often take hundreds of years to break down. An alternative ideology are disposable products made from natural sources. The Natural Year Phone is made of hay, sans screen and soft keys. The hard components get recycled while the hay is um. . . well I wouldn’t smoke it.

Mac Funamizu names his newest project a little too well, calling the desktop hygrometer and thermometer “Tired of Numbers.” Yanko Design is, incase you were unaware, primarily a blog about design concepts. Project after project, time after time, Mac Funamizu defines the Yanko motto: “Form Beyond Function.” And I mean that in as positive a manner as possible!

The Dark Fire is Gibson’s second robot guitar in so many years. This one is a beast. Three state-of-the-art pickups, robot-accurate frets and neck, “revolutionary rotary potentiometer.” Wonder what that is? The Dark Fire guitar “can play every single guitar tone ever.” Seem like a stretch? Come with me, and we shall spell out the doom that is the Dark Fire… !

Rob Maslin had the clever idea to redesign bolt and screw heads that can be tightened and loosened with ordinary coins. Of course if this works as well as he thinks, I doubt all the hardware tool makers would sit idly by watching their profits sink.

When I make my own studio, I’m going to call it Friends Party. And we will do battle with Isolation Unit, the studio of Teruhiro Yanagihara- the designer of this fantastic little flower pot creation. To activate the pot, all you have to do is follow the instructions given by the nice lady in the preview picture: open, expand over cup, look approvingly, and insert flower!

If you’ve ever been to a store that caters to mothers and newborns, you were probably overwhelmed at the selection. The number of bottle choices alone are staggering! One of the latest contenders is the accolade laden Adiri Natural Nurser. Designed by Whipsaw Inc. to simulate a mother’s breast and nipple using BPF FREE materials, it’s a baby bottle simplified in design but as it turns out may be better than the generic bottles flooding the market.

Nicolas Lehotzky notice a niche trend among Mac users with built-in webcams Many cover it with post-it notes out of privacy concerns even tho there’s no way to turn it on without actively doing so. He created a little “lid” accessory if you will, that slides across the top of the screen bezel. If ever you feel like you’re being watched, just slide the cover over that tiny webcam lens and rest assured, even the best hackers aren’t going to be able to see what you do home alone.

This unnamed design by Andy Kurovets and Kris Dekeijser is a headphone that doubles as a webcam. That giant crystal on the side is actually a cover hiding the lens. The idea is no matter where you’re listening to music, seeing your friends is just a crystal popping moment away.
