Yes, it has struck again. It’s cardboard! And made and treated the way we’re talking about here, it’s chemical free, recycled, and recyclable! How is that for wrapping your arms around some bark? Included in this post are several designs, all designed by Ben Blanc Studio made exclusively for Cardboardesign, all ready to be slap-packed and picked up by you for you and yours.

So what have we got here?

Two count them two children’s fold up toys, one a shark, the other a television “puppetTV” inside which a child can pretend to be the worlds greatest action hero and television star: Mister Rogers. Or Captian Kangaroo. Don’t forget Spongebob. Ren and Stimpy not allowed.

Catscratchers made for all you hip kitties out there to sink your claws into. No seriously for cats only. If you are a cat and are reading this, please email me and we can be in touch. I want to talk to a cat that can read.

And finally, an amazing room divider. The room divider comes in a set of 50 pieces. Each piece is a die-cut shape that you can use to slot-connect your way to a new amazing wall in any dimension. Five thousand feet tall if you want.

No tools or hardware required for anything. Cardboard only!

SCORE ONE for the designer and for MUJI if they ever intend to manufacture it. The Dog Pod takes the Japanese minimalist aesthetic and serves up a cozy mound of mindfulness for your favorite pooch. The wrinkled blanket may look a mess but I can attest having owned 2 dogs they love to mess up their beds before plopping down. Supersize it and I may want one for myself. Just an excuse not to make my bed.

This is a project about the future. The future of pets. Dogs and cats, mostly. It’s a harness. On this harness is a bunch of information: GPS location, vaccinations, and medical information. With these tidbits, enter the online experience: communication with fellow pet owners becomes a whole new level of creepy / excellent with realtime pet updates.

The biggest benefit here, if you’re not the type to track your puppy’s every movement, is the registration information: alternate to a flat, destroyable tag, or the weird, embedded under skin chip. This thang comes right at the same time as that SenseCam deal that hangs around your neck and records your whole life. Think about your dog. Does your dog want that? Yes. Your dog wants that, because your dog loves you.

Online connectivity and information exchange.
GPS for location and retrieval.
Vaccinations + other medical records.

Is it… fashionable?

Everybody loves puppies! And if they don’t, they’re terrible! What this post is all about is the people who are completely devoted to bringing their entire life into the future, the design-conscious future! One that includes not only us humanoids, but out pets too! This is today’s top 10!

Oh my goodness did you even know we had a pets category? Yeah man, it doesn’t come up that often because it’s just so amazingly elite. Walk along with the cuteness of pets! OH and if you want to know, the puppies in the picture above are my aunt’s dog Penny’s puppies. So cute!

1. Old Soul : in a review by our hero Long Tran, the excellence of the Old Soul series of dog toys is shown fully in the title of one of the products: the “Slobber-Wick bone.” These dog toys are made for your “elderly” puppy.

2. Peepo GPS Device for Guide Dogs : is exactly what the future holds for guide dogs of the future. Assuming we don’t invent the Geordi La Forge seeing-eye visor first, of course. The system works on a vibration system which guides the dog to the given location (with a re-guidance system incase a few wrong turns are took.)

3. Dog Brick : Again with the review! Long Tran again tests a product on his lovely puppy dawg Miko. This time it’s a game which makes the doggah smarter! Made out of plastic or wood, this “Dog Brick” teaches a dog basically the same way a test-mouse learns through trial and error.

4. Duplex Bird Cage / Aquarium : This is a fabulous design if you’re in with the fish and bird collecting crowd. But here’s something special, if you’re up for a larf: check out the original post for a 41 comment yell-a-thon over the ethical treatment of tiny tropical fish and house-birds!

5. HARK Acoustic Transmitter Concept : I know what you’re thinking. What if I’m a collector of gigantic fish and underwater mammals? What If I have a flock of dolphins, and I need to hear them at night when I look at them through my bedroom window which shows their tank? Well look no further! In a concept that’s basically a doctor’s stethoscope, you too can hear your pet whale!

6. Infinity Aquarium : Getting a bit fishy again, we’ve got quite the tank here. This one’s not going to house your 2 ton aquatic mammalia, but it will hold those little tropicals we just argued about a minute ago. Look to Anthony James for clues on how to clean this tank.

7. OKKO Ceramic Bird Feeder : Birds! Ahhh! They’re loose again! Watch your head, don’t let them get at your eyes! Tell them about the new bird feeder we just set up for them! Maybe they’ll calm down when they realize how amazing it is! They’ll really dig it’s modern look and simple features!

8. Jamboree Dog Hammock : Let’s b-reel here for a minute and agree that puppies are the real pet. And puppies, they need beds. They need lovin, they need treats, they need to know how to do a high-five, and they need beds. Nice beds. This is a nice, fantastically colored bed that any right-minded puppy will love. Can’t know what those left-minded puppies like though, they’re nuts.

9. Bikube : Wait, what the heck is that thing? You might be asking. Well I’ll tell you! It’s an “urban beehive.” …Oh. Bees. I don’t want to keep bees as pets! But hey! Bees are good for the environment. And they make honey! And they are always very fashionable. You’ve got to love bees! This “Bikube” is a home for those people who wish to keep their very own lovely trading spaces approved home environment looking modern at the same time as keeping their bee population shacked up nice!

10. DogPot : Still and always my favorite puppy concept because it’s PINK and SILLY and WONDERFUL and I got to use the word Shipoopi when I wrote about it! One of the funniest and funnest concepts on Yanko Design I think of all time, and it’s made for poopies. Yay!

This is just one of many upcoming video reviews from an awesome company called Premier and their line of dog toys called Busy Buddy. The Kibble Nibble Food and Treat Dispenser is a hollow ball with openings on each end. The premise is simple. Put food in the ball and give it to Rover. It’s an easy game for any dog to figure out and they love it. It keeps them moving and interactivity is key to a positive doggy state of mind. Hit the jump to see my dog Miko in action!

There isn’t anything I didn’t like about this toy. The plastic is incredibly durable and the purple webbing design is slightly rubber-rized to protect floors. The size is just right for medium to big dogs but I don’t see why little dogs couldn’t enjoy it either. My only suggestion for improvement is to make the rubber prongs in each opening adjustable without having to snip them. They control how much and how fast food dispenses. I made the mistake of cutting too much off and the “game” ends way too soon for my dog.

Guide Dogs for the blind folks generally come trained for taking them around the neighborhood and maybe an extra distance. This surely curtails mobility and independence in case they want to explore more than their usual territory. The Peepo GPS Device gives these people a certain degree of freedom to travel beyond the normal route. The GPS system charts the course and guides the dog to the desired destination using a series of vibrations to steer him.

The two-part device comprises of a handheld GPS unit, which uses vocal commands to register the destination and map it. The second attaches to the guide dog’s handle and gives subtle directions via vibration zones; L= Left, R= Right, F= Forward and up on arriving the destination, the zones simultaneously vibrate.

The biggest USP of this device is that it has a touch “return home same way function”, which is quite reassuring.

Besides having a dedicated “Pets” section on YD, we even have a resident pet Miko, who actually reviews various products for us. I wonder what he will have to say about the portion this Pet Food Scoop dishes out. Anyways this scoop is more for his master’s convenience than his, coz it can double up as a fastener for the opened doggy food bag. As for the portion size, if one scoop ain’t enough then just measure out another!

Get your stingers out for the “Bikube;” it’s a beehive for modern city dwellers who want to help fix the decreasing bee population. The designer of this project, Adam Weaver, attacks the Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) problem head-on with this stylish box. It’s a beehive. You attach it to your outside wall. Bees live in it! And you could probably paint flames on it if you wanted to!

More details: The Bikube is designed with slopes on all sides to let rain and debris slide off with ease. The Bikube is a nucleus hive, and it is easily wall mounted. The Bikube utilizes an integrated handle for ease of use and transport, and there’s a glass section for humans to look and peek in on what kind of business is going on inside the hive.

Let’s make honey-bees abundant!

If you’ve ever perused the toy aisle of a pet store, the options are overwhelming. “One for every occasion” is an understatement. It occurred to me most toys were geared towards puppies and young adults. The seniors, much like their human counterparts, totally get shafted. I have a 9 y.o. dog which by canine standards is more than mature. My search led me to a series of dog toys called Old Soul by a cool little company called Planet Dog.

At first glance, it’s a set of squishy plush toys but grab it and you’ll feel the difference. As dogs age, life cheats them with reduced vision, snout strength, and stiff joints. It seems rather unfair for a lifetime of love and loyalty but do these toys do anything different and better than toys marketing for gentle chewers?

The Orbee Ball comes from a line of award winning toys called Orbee-Tuff. The Old Soul version is softer, more pliable and stretchy with a little treat spot. The Slobber-Wick bone (adorable name) is a lot softer than other rubberized bones and it makes a satisfyingly “clicks” when compressed. The Squeak Buddies and Bones are almost elastic, woven to deal with immense tension. All 4 toys come in 3 sizes. So where does ID help?

The obvious answer is material choice and construction. Just because they’re soft doesn’t mean they’re fragile. These toys last as evidence by these pictures. After a month of everyday play – a good washing makes them new again; not a single mar or broken stitch. Even the colors make sense. There’s much debate about what dogs can actually see but it’s clear they are highly acute to contrast. The silvery white is indicative of canines growing grey from age. The bright teal is contrasty making it easier to see. These are also one of the few 100% recyclable and non-toxic dog toys out there.

What we like:

Call us minimalists but we love the unassuming design

Soft pliable materials perfect for gentle jaws

Bright contrast colors for vision

Tough construction for durability

Environmentally friendly

Made is the U.S.A. (for you American readers)

Affordable, ranging from $9 – $15

What could be improved:

A more engaging, interactive toy, perhaps treat dispensing or puzzle solving

I am totally floored by Ilya Fridman’s design for a Dog Hammock. First of all as a dog-lover, I simply adore the idea of getting a pet pooch his own hammock, and to top it off the dog-bed helps in subtly collecting stray dog fur by harnessing the attraction power of static electricity. What a blessing! Ilya also win’s my vote for using recycled materials in the construction of Jamboree.

For the hammock, he has used rubber as a raw material, collected from old flips/flops (or thongs) to create interwoven brickwork bed. The rubber creates a static charge whilst the dog is lying on it and attracts all the stray fur onto it. The frame is designed to be laser-cut and folded out of various materials including steel, aluminum, acrylic or paper and can be fashioned in varying sizes according to the size of the dog. The connecting cable used in this prototype is one from an old clothes line, which is a steel cable with a plastic outer coating.

We all know that cleaning the fur shed by pets is such a chore; full marks for your thought process Ilya!
