Most of my friends get all awestruck and goofy when they lay their hands on the latest netbooks. For me it’s always been an affair with notebooks and paper; a case of old habits dying hard, because I grew up using portfolios and paper books. Stationery essentials like the Notefolio are just my types. It’s a gamut of things: a handy recycled chipboard cover with a note book inside, a folder with an envelope for business cards; plus a strong rubber band that holds it all together. Apt for an Executive Assistant like me!

First glance you can pass this off as a book of matches, but that isn’t what the “Five Minutes” is all about. A book of 10 small candles that comes handy in many everyday situations! Why, I can think of 3 situations right this instant: 1) When you bring in the cake but forget the candles. 2) Emergency lights-out. 3) In my travel bag, right next to pocket matches and paper-strip soaps! How many tricky situations can you come up with?

So! Winter is well on it’s way. There’s no way around it. As the world turns, so do the seasons *unless you don’t live in Minnesota, and you’ve got to understand that camping season is almost over! So make the best of it with the greatest tent invention since the tent itself: the tent connection device. Called “Abri Socio” by its mad-scientist creator, it will change the way you camp… FOREVER!

The mad scientist who created this camp-changing device is named Becky Greenwood. She’s got this idea that will bring camping people closer together without sacrificing their privacy.

It works by connecting two “two man” tents with a helpful storage container for tools and crackers and beers and such. Once camping is complete, the bag functions like a normal “extra” camping bag, creating a larger space to hold the tent than the bag that it comes with, making it twice as fast to pack up.

Get sociable!

And for those of you who still buy CD albums? Hands up, everybody who still purchases music CDs from the record store. Wild! Some of you do? Alright then, let’s get on with it. Here’s a way for you CD-o-philes to get your aesthetic pleasure on. You open your cd, listen to it for a while, then put it away – where? In your brand new “Qubiq” case, right up there on your wall! Isn’t that pretty?

The Qubiq stores one cd package and its accompanying album. The album case fits in the inside of the Qubiq, sliding in on a vertical drawer, while the cd fits on a big of high-density foam on the front.

Pretty!

Hope you own a lot of Radiohead and White Stripes albums!

This isn’t the first time the whole world moved towards “greener” design but hopefully this time it’ll stick. Plastic spoons that come with takeout foods are inefficient and “ungreen” so the challenge was to find the most cost effective remedy while giving Earth one less thing to worry about. Ideally you should carry your own flatware but if you don’t mind a little kitsch, check out the Spoon and Box.

The handle is a perfect spot to hide a precut spoon. Just turn it inside out (the clean side) and you’re ready to eat. It can even turn into a spork for those sporky occasions. Works fine for dry foods but I wouldn’t go dipping into some greasy chili fries or Chinese food with it. So did we really solve any problems here?

Beauteous industrial designs. Below check out three top amalgamations of the eco-friendly totally-new Veuve Clicquot champagne box. Devour the color of this “Design Box,” first of all. Look at that yellow! Or is it gold? With red accents. Oh then also it’s made of paper. Paper only. Less than 5% coverage with inks, glues, and solvents. And no plastic film. And micro-grooving is used to reduce the amount of paper in the packaging. AND the paper is FSC approved. What’s that mean?

FSC: “The paper used comes from forests under management of the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), a non-profit organizationestablished to promote the responsible management of our forests.” Wowie. Now check out some of the projects inspired by the box, along with renderings of all three and in-progress pics of the couch and the cellar.

1) Couch by Front Design Boxes stacked and arranged to create an interesting albeit seemingly difficult to clean couch. That’s not to say it’s not splendidly-modern and probably truly comfortable for it’s squareness. Take a peek at the pic that shows one of the designer ladies from Front having a sit on a bit of it : doesn’t she look joyous?

2) Lamp by Tom Dixon: part of an edition of 500 lamps for the greater good of cut-up letters! Slicing graphic design projects up like this can go wrong, but sometimes can go terribly, terribly right. This sort of letters-to-chopped-pattern motif is a trend that’s not quite reached it’s peak yet. It’s still big in the designy-shops in my city of Minneapolis – here Dixon does it right.

3) Cellar by 5.5 Designers: a wall I wouldn’t mind testing out in my house. The repetition works, and so does the brickery motif. Super orangy. Notice how the design of the box becomes the pattern for the whole object. The cellar is built to house the champagne boxes in the same way store shelves are sized to fit them for distribution.

Ideation abound! Fit to win.

So you’ve got a mess of a tray there, coffee commuter. You look like you’re in the mood for a better top. Small innovations for a gigantic industry. Hot coffee’s new top is the “Coffee Top Caddie;” what basically amounts to a new mold for the plastic top that fits on top of your coffee cup. With this innovation, you can fit everything you need for that trip from the counter to your table or the order window to your car.

Do you have any idea how dangerous it is to drink coffee in your car? You must be nuts in the head. Check out this new top for you crazies. Put the creamers and the sugar packets right at the head of things.

We all need stress relief. Some people internalize it. Some people lash out. You could pick up meditation or try to keep yourself busy but sometimes hitting something really hard is the quick (best) way to release all that tension. Break It is a body and mind relaxation kit – a meditation CD, some herb tea aren’t exactly new but in order to get to it, you have to “break it.” Pretend you’re a master martial artist and smash that sh*t open. Don’t worry, it’s made of potato starch.

This is so easy to figure out I don’t even have to explain it. I think it’s fabulous for camping, drinks, picnics, impromptu gatherings, or even when you’re too lazy to wash dishes. Tho you can use the Foldable Bowl for just about anything, I’d avoid hot foods. My only gripe is the material. Plastic, really? Do we need to go down that road again? I didn’t step into some alternate universe where plastic and nature get along fabulously right?

Plastic bubbles wraps are one of the chief sources of environmental degradation since our world revolves around the packaging and transport of goods. The Paper Wrap offers the same level of protection but at a very neutral cost to the planet. A precut symmetric pattern similar to a steel grate buffers precious goods but I see two faults. One, the flexibility of bubble wrap makes it more usable in a wide array of applications. Two, I can’t pop paper wrap and everyone knows humans have an OCD fascination with popping bubbles.
