On The Level

On The Level

There seems to be a call to arms within the furniture design community about mass produced commodities. To them I say, exclusive furniture seems a bit “old fashioned.” We can embrace modernity without losing the soul such as the case with Spanish manufacturer AG Land 14. I absolutely love their pieces. The design is strong and machine manufacturing has only helped it with precision engineering.

Fish Tank of Eternal Life

Fish Tank of Eternal Life

Designer Rob Maslin would like us all to think of the following phrase while looking at his project (in this post) and while going about creating industrial designs for the rest of our conscious lives: There is no such thing as sustainable product, only the by-products of a sustainable system. To be sustainable, first we must establish a close-loop system and the carrying capacity, then the system must be managed and not over- or under-consumed.” Thusly Maslin presents an aquaponic project by the name of “Free Lunch.” It’s an office-based fishtank with a loop of production and two sources of food.

A Desk of Transformers

A Desk of Transformers

Behold the transformable desk for creative persons, Kkanapètko. In the description we received from the designer, Krassi Dimitrov, I thought I read “crazy persons” and immediately got excited. Turns out it really is “creative persons,” but when it comes down to it, I know because I am one, creative persons and crazy persons are often one in the same. And speaking as a crazy creative, I say right now, this is a wonderful desk. Tiny when closed, one or two comfortable modes when in action, Kkanapètko go!

Timed Organizer In A Book

Timed Organizer In A Book

In the day and age where electronic gadgets double up as reminders of tasks and appointments, I applaud Wonjune Song’s bold move to go back to the basics of pen and paper and of course the trusty old watch. Watch Diary is basically a book with a clock set in the middle of the page. The “red hand” indicates the current task, the “before hand” indicates past chores and the “forward hand” indicates the upcoming ones. A simple glance at the page and you’ll know if you’ve kept up your schedule or are lagging.

Pin Sprouts

Pin Sprouts

Tack-pins or metal push-pins have come a long way from their humble round-head-design. For the sake of convenience, the flat-round head has been given a “sprout” look here. Convenient to hold, push and pull!

Plant them in, or pull them out!

Paper To Pencil, Just Like That!

Paper To Pencil, Just Like That!

P&P Office Waste Paper Processor is one of those things that you wish you knew how it works, but dang! no reasonable explanation provided at all! Maybe it’s a deliberate attempt on the designer teams’ part, because their idea is a surefire hit! What this lovely machine does is that it converts all those useless memos on your table to something useful: A Pencil! Paper goes in from one end and come out shaped like a sexy writing tool! Sexy enough an idea to bag a Liteon Award as well!

For The Apple Geek Of The Day!

For The Apple Geek Of The Day!

I’m sure this concept is going to bring smiles to many iGeeks (me included) and keep us lusting for it to become a reality! The Docking and Storage Base is a convenient tray that fits under the screen of the iMac or PC and docks everything ‘i’; iPod, iPhone, iPad. It covers the area below and to the back of the screen allowing you to sync, charge, store and display up to 3 devices. Two of the docks are towards the end of the ramp so that they don’t obstruct the main screen, allowing them to be used as secondary screens (clever!).

Never Ending Pencil

Never Ending Pencil

To cut a long story short, what we have here is a simple writing tool called the Continuous Pencil, which can be used till the very end. We usually end up discarding pencil stubs…I know my children waste too many saying that short pencils are uncomfortable to hold. So basically you keep increasing the length of your stubs with a handy interim-headless-long stick that fits snugly into its rear. Quite simple and straight, but is it a refinement of the 1 + 1 Pencil?

Getting Creative With Inukshuks

Getting Creative With Inukshuks

A bunch of pebbles on your desk can transform to something meaningful…as meaningful as the stone landmarks used for navigation by the Inuits. Here is the modern age “Inukshuk”, magnetic stones that become a photograph holder, paper clip stand or a stress buster! If you watch the video till the end…you’ll know what I mean…

This Time The Push-ups Are Not Bras

This Time The Push-ups Are Not Bras

For some odd reason it’s called the Push-up, but there’s nothing indicative to that action, I mean you don’t have to push anything UP! Push- Up is a waste bin, and it’s got this flexible form so I assume it’s made from some kinda rubber or silicone. When the trash piles up half-way, you just gather the mouth of the bin together and compress the contents…pesto…now there’s some more room for some more trash! As for the mouth-of-the-bin, it goes back to the original shape once you release it. Flexible wastebasket eh!

V Cut In The Tape

V Cut In The Tape

V-tape is a cellotape design that dispenses itself! A clear-cut solution to the problem of finding the tape plus cutting it…can’t get simpler than this! My only issue with the design is that you can’t really tear out smaller than the V – point tape-length. It will have to be one or more roll-lengths and this can get wasteful. Using a scissor will defeat the purpose of this design! Quite a paradox eh!

Through Gridded Chaos

Through Gridded Chaos

Here’s something I did not expect. This is a Shadow Cloud, a three dimensional object with seemingly random elements strewn throughout it that, with light, reveals order in the shadows it casts. This box of lines and squares casts shadows of religious symbols! It’s totally amazing! The object in this post is called “Thru Religion” and is a cubical Shadow Cloud designed in a 3D program then printed using a 3D object printer.

Stand Up And Retract Your Pens

Stand Up And Retract Your Pens

Upright & retract: the two new mantras for a dowdy marker pen; too amusing and cute! What we have here is the Upstanding Retractable Markers, a set of sketch markers that stay upright (think Weeble Wobbles) and have a retractable nib. This saves you the trouble of leaking nibs, but I seriously recommend a cap for keeping the color-stick dust-free and moist. Somehow the idea of pens lined upright on a desk makes me wonder, how many will become Humpty Dumpty and have a great fall!
