A common misconception about the hearing impaired is their inability to experience the joy of music. They may not hear and process sound audibly but they certainly can feel it. In fact, studies have shown the sense of touch is heightened allowing them to perceive music in a totally different way. SOUNZZZ is a visual, audio, tactile MP3 player designed for the hearing impaired but universal enough for all to enjoy.

Sound is translated into a series of vibrations. One hugs the device to feel the music and it even plays an equalized light show along with the sound. A very unique device I would love to see on store shelves.

Standing on scales to check your weight is supposed to be this hushed up ritual (unless you’re thin) that no one is supposed to know of. So I’m really curious to know how people will react and accept the Riant Weighing Scale. It’s got this jazzy pendulum system to it, with one knob that stays focused at your previous weight (or desired weight) and the other one that reads your actual weight. Stand on it, and god forbid you’ve gain weight; it lets out this shrill sound of pendulums crashing!

Damn, this would be the worst nightmare for folks like me who never find a friend in scales. I mean its bad enough that I’ve put on weight and now even the neighbors know about it! No more chocolate cake for me!

Toothbrushes! Only Sterile Toothbrushes…I promise! The deal is that some folks think it’s high time we had a system to sterilize toothbrushes as they are a breeding ground for some awful Bacteria. One of the ways suggested is to somehow harness our 700 stokes (if you brush for 3 minutes) to kinetic energy, which in turn powers the UV LED in the toothbrush to do some Bacteria zapping. To cut the chase, use Shake Toothbrush, jiggy = dry, sterile toothbrush!

We tend to associate polluted water problems with under-developed countries and rarely give a thought to how we would cope with a situation when our fully developed city comes under the siege of Mother Nature’s fury! At times like this, contraptions like the Happy Basin for instant purified drinking water can come as a relief. The basin includes nano ceramic filters embedded in the holes at the bottom of the cup that help in the filtration of polluted water. You simply need to push the basin into the water body and let surface tension buoyancy take its course.

Clean, precious water; up for slurps!

Any Guesses? Ok the only clue is that it measures temperature, but then again what’s so special about The Tube! If you think you know the answer, leave me a message in the comments. Be honest about your guess though!

The Tube is a new phosphorescent thermometer that has been test used by 40 doctors; they of course give it a Thumbs-Up. The main aim of it is to be a user-friendly device, allowing visibility of the numbers in the dark. Essentially this means you needn’t switch on a night lamp just to check a patient’s temperature at night.

Rewave is essentially a design using Reverse Osmosis for desalinating the sea water. More for private consumption in coastal regions where fresh water is scarce or at-sea disaster situations, the Rewave is quite self-sufficient. It floats in water and harnesses the energy from the waves to power itself. Since a great amount of pressure is required for RO, the aperture has been placed at the bottom of body, allowing the seawater to get through to the motor area. After desalinating, the fresh water accumulates at the top and comes out via a pipe.

The only caution needed to be taken with Rewave is that the filters get worn out and need to be changed frequently. When the filters discolor, you know it’s time to change them! Bright side, the filters are made from recycled materials.

Inspired by the Giving Tree, this project called the “Savior Bud” latches on to trees (one of Earth’s most generous living things) and uses it’s natural recycling processes to obtain water. In a simple process which basically involves collecting the moisture from the leaves and emptying it out into containers, the Savior Bud takes one more step toward acceptable living conditions in Africa.

As our intrepid designers note, Africa is plagued twice by their hydration situation. Twice because not only is their water supply low, but the water that’s available is often undrinkable and polluted.

The process goes like this:

1. Find a broadleaf tree with lots of leaves.

2. Opening the Savior Bud like a giant clamp, surround a few leaves, and release. The Savior Bud should now be containing the leaves like you see in the picture below, sort of like a greenhouse.

3. In about four hours, the leaves will have produced about one cup of water. Turning the bottom of the bud like a faucet will release the water to be put into a separate container for drinking.

Additional details below. I wouldn’t mind one of these for camping or something like that, would you?

Also, C-3P0 not required.

Feelor Touch the Color is a color pencil set that comes with a specialized character-form on the head. It’s intended as a teaching aid for blind, preschool children, who are able to grasp concepts of shapes better than mere words or Braille. For example, if they are to color their page a particular color say red; they pull out a pencil with the head shaped as an apple, because apples are red. Likewise a chic stands for yellow, clover for green, and so on…

This retractable lead pencil has a button on its side to pull the lead out or in and is ergonomically designed for a better grasp. The idea behind the project is nice, and the designing has been kept simple and easy for small children to understand. I think blind people have heightened senses, so touching and feeling for objects comes naturally for them. However, only the research experts in this field will be able to give us a proper verdict on the Feelor’s feasibility and acceptance.

The Braun Post-Disaster Emergency Foot Protective Accessory is for the rescue workers who are there on scene of disasters like earthquakes. Due to the disturbed topography after such calamities, the feet of the rescue guys are most vulnerable and susceptible to injury and infection. Shards of glass, nails, debris etc. hamper the mission and walking over them always poses a threat. This handy contraption fits snugly over the shoe and protects the feet from accidental nips and cuts thanks to its sturdy structure. It’s a two-part thing with a steel and silica gel insole and an over-the-shoe strap-up.

Dubbed “Pureray” by its creators in reference to its completely amazing ultraviolet rays lamp at the base and amplification pipe up the center. Each bottle is stored with a cap which screws off the top, screws on the bottom, and provides ultraviolet light to disinfect any evil viruses or germs one baby formula on the rocks might have. Made for traveling.

Made for travel is always a silly thing to write on a baby gear package because when that kid is small enough to be called a baby, ANYwhere you bring it is going to be considered “travel” for all the items you’ve gotta bring with. And don’t forget the Cheerios.

And that formula! It’s got to be perfect.

The Pureray comes with two bottles in a holster, each one with a cap that converts to an ultraviolet ray projector for the liquid to be held in the bottle. Get your ray on!
