River Han winds its way through Seoul and poses a pretty picture. I’m sure a stroll along its banks will be pleasant and refreshing, but designer Kyung Kuk Kim (he’s a resident of Seoul) feels, Han can be beautified in a very inviting and eco-friendly way. He proposes the installation of Wind Lamps on the underbelly of the bridge, across the river. These vertical lamps are fitted with a specialized wind-harnessing generator that powers the LEDs within.

Besides powering the in-built LEDS, the generators collectively have enough capacity to source and power other street lamps and essentials on the bridge. I must say, it’s quite a neat idea that beautifies the city and doesn’t burden the resources.

Close on heels to that concept is this Eco – Twinkle Light. Just like how you would crank up the battery or simply sharpen a pencil, you rotate Twinkle’s handle to charge it up. Twinkling fairy lights with loads of imaginary fairy dust, sparkle up this gem of an idea!

Never follow a snake without a big bump in the middle. Take the initiative and train yourself to understand the safeness of the light. The lighthearted comparison of this lamp “After Dinner” to a snake that’s just eaten. There’s two kinds, After Dinner and After Lunch. Can you guess which is which? Not for sitting on.

Made to be versatile. The After Dinner and After Lunch both use fluorescent energy-saving bulbs. Small amounts of light and heat emit from this lamp, allowing for many locations of placement.

On the bed, in the bed, on the ground, on the ceiling, in the living room, in the kitchen, in the baby’s room, in the hallway. Ambience, son.

Made in the workshop by the famous Hans A Huseklepp and a super-collaborator of his Davide Groppi.

Passive emergency. That’s what this is. This lamp was made to remain dormant until an emergency arises. It can sit on the table or on the floor. Each of the pod’s arms sit in peace until the time for crazy emergency is here. They’ve each got a magnetic base, turning on when released from their home. And then your home can be lit again until the crazy time is done.

Lovely, isn’t it!? It can be used for other uses than emergencies, too. Use it for night lights, charging the lights up each day by returning them to their base.

The cover of the lights can be removed with a simple screw. The entire product is snap-based, fitting one piece to the other, abolishing the need for screws. Screwtastic!

In a creative fit of emotion, Jonathan Rowell found himself a brand new way to adjust. To turn, to spin, to tighten and un-tighten. That’s what he found himself into. The lamp that goes up and down, the lamp of many colors, designer Jonathan Rowell went for the sexual reference, “Screw Me” by name, vertical adjustment by game.

All you’ve got to remember is lefty-loosie, righty-tightie. These lamps come in many colors and are made of basic materials. They work how you think they’ll work, and play how you think they’ll play.

Now you take a look at this lamp and tell me: is it gonna stand up to roughness, or is it gonna screw nice?

It’s quite funny actually when you think about it; products that you use in extreme conditions, when refined and gilded, suddenly become prized possessions and artifacts. For example the oil lanterns that the electricity-deprived population uses, becomes an iconic possession for the fortunate one. We don’t really care much about the construction lamp found in the garage, but if Form Us With Love decides to glam it up and give us the “Work Lamp”; WE WANT IT!

Available in Gold and Chrome plated versions and refined with a dimmer incorporated to the design; this “Blue Collar” lamp is rightly called the one lamp that rules it all!

The idea behind the Tree & Root Lamp is to make us aware of the fact that we are cutting down way too many trees. So how does Kitae Pak translate this into motion? When positioned inverted in the pot, the lamp signifies a dead root, with the tree cut-off. Upright the lamp and it illuminates the room, depicting the true virtues of a tree and its importance in our lives. Besides the poetic garble, I simply think it’s an elegant design that can find pride in many homes.

Pratt, in a crazy scheme to promote its students, alumni and faculty, recently outfitted two Brooklyn condos on the corner of 3rd and Bond Street with every manner of design paraphernalia, invited a bunch of people and put up an open bar. Color me there. Drawing on past and present Pratt faculty and students like Eva Zeisel and Tucker Viemeister, the spaces came alive with conscious, inventive, often green, always cool design.

The space of the upper apartment above uses the Dual Height Bench from David Zachary as a delightfully geometric centerpiece surrounded by a one-of-a-kind lounge from Eva Zeisel as well as cardboard chairs from CardboardDesign. In a similar nod to cardboard, the winerack from Anthony Caradonna and Pratt architecture students (below) will contrast nicely with your expensive wine and if the recycled cardboard doesn’t assuage your eco-guilt, its alcoholic contents surely will.

One of my personal favorites, the Array Series from Pratt alumnus Jason Pfaeffle (above), will appeal to any former K’nex fans who can’t resist taking apart their furniture and putting it back together as they like. Evoking similar focus on user interaction, the Rosebud Felt Bowl from alumnus Diane Ruengsorn below has the user snap the bowl together using a magnets embedded in a single piece of industrial felt.

Also displaying a selection of fine art from the school, the Laser Bed Prints (above) were captured from the Architecture department’s often used laser cutting machine by Pratt professor Mark Parsons and transferred to Homasote, rendering otherwise discarded scraps into something beautiful. Using the same laser cutting process, Anthony Caradonna cut away the disarming lamp shades (below) which, standing erect by their own cylindrical structure, are simply placed over a bare lightbulb.

Finally, seeing Pratt alum Harry Allen’s C’mere Hand Hook in person, holding a Timex watch from Evo Design, confirms every suspicion I had, it is indeed as creepy in person as it is on the ‘tubes. If anyone in the Brooklyn area has an interest in the condo’s and between 300 and 900 large burning a hole in their pocket, drop by Third and Bond, for those less filthy rich I would suggest the newly opened Yanko Store.

Yay for buttons! I’m basically in love with anything that with a switch, click, or pull can activate a system or complete a circuit. Here we’ve got a bit of a bike attached to a pole which in turn is attached to a light and a lamp that activates upon the engaging of the brake. A very simple connection executed in a really elegant manner.

As you can see the lamp is stylish. There’s no arguing that. Unless you’re a total jerk! In which case you probably don’t bicycle around anyway. So if you’re not a jerk, take a closer look and notice that this particular lamp can be extended and shortened too, and is all-around nice for your average room or your odd room. Anything ye need.
