Chilling Outside The Window

It’s interesting to so how cultural practices can trigger off inspiration to design a product that can be an extension of the same. For instance in India we usually keep pickles on our window sill, to marinate and cook them in the natural heat. Whereas in China, because of their cold conditions, food is kept outside the window to preserve it, plus it frees up the kitchen space. This Chinese practice inspired Frenchman Nicolas Hubert to design the External Refrigerator. A fridge that hangs on the external wall of your home.

You will be the belle of the ball when you pop this lovely little mamma out on the train ride from Scottland to London town. Such a fancy fellow or lady you shall be with four cups of instant coffee! Inside of this device, the “icoffee”, you’ll find a refillable water tank, four synthesized ceramic cups, rechargeable battery (or adapter) for power, and the ability to create four cups on the go! Go go go and drink drink drink.

My Pet Espresso Maker

It’s the most helpful thing on four legs in your whole house! The puppy dog comes in a close second, losing only because the rolled-up paper you’ve been given is covered in slobber. The project we’re talking about right here goes by the name “Espresso on Four Legs.” And that’s just what it is, a maker up on all fours. It’s a cylinder that appears to float horizontally above your coffee cup. One side has a door for water, the other side has a door for a coffee capsule. On top, a button for short or long.

Microbes Free Kitchen Thingies

So what is your cleaning routine for dishcloths and kitchen cutting boards? Mine is this: for the cutting board, I scrub it clean with an ordinary dish-soap and every now and then I boil the dishcloth in soap + disinfectant water. I follow this routine for the lack of “sterilizing aids” in India, plus we are the lazy sorts…we have house helps to do most of this stuff. But on this global forum, I’m becoming more aware of the hazards of not having a good sanitizing routine. If I were to pick one, I’d use this convenient Pure System that sanitizes the cloth and board; in one go.

Snail Cooking Is A Faster Process That You Think!

One of the Electrolux Design 2010 Finalists is the “Snail”, a micro induction heating system that relies on a high density sugar crystal battery for energy. It uses the power to heat up coils to conduct the magnetic induction process and heat the food in the utensil. It features in-built sensors that detect what you’re heating and adjust the settings for food type, time and temperature accordingly. What I like is that it can be stuck to any sized pot, pan or mug and moreover you can use 2 or more Snails at once, depending upon your meal and utensil-size.

The Kitchen Hideaway is a peep into what food prep might be like in the future. A helmet and viewport allow you to image what it is you want to eat in your own virtual kitchen. Gone are the large appliances replaced by efficient robots that serve every gluttonous desire. You have to actually know how to cook the dish. The robots are only mimicking your technique. The technology is so life-like, it’s indistinguishable from the real thing. This is the Jetsons people. Even George would be jealous.

Cooking Outdoors A Little More Bearable

I really dislike camping. The need to commune with nature isn’t enough of a reason to rough it. I can enjoy the view just the same from a cabin thank you very much. If you nag me about it, I’ll say it’s the cooking. Camp food sucks but the Kuzmit social cooker might pry me away long enough from my 400 thread count sheets to engage in a little R&R. It’s modern, easy to clean, and looks quite fun to use. See the guy leaning back eating while the woman cooks? Yea, I’m that guy.

Freshly Squeezed And Straight Into The Glass

The powers of observation can bring about revolutionary changes in the world of design. Although I wouldn’t classify the Steep Juicer as one such change, but it’s simple, logical design that stems from observing our surroundings is super. Jackob Mazor was particularly inspired by the hand-juicers that roadside stalls use. If you’ve noticed, their body has a spout which dispenses the juice directly into a glass. Good Observation!

I’ve been watching BBC’s The Genius of Design and it has totally re-educated my perspective of the Industrial Design profession. The genius of design is in offering solutions to a problem in such a way that they don’t compromise on our routine habits. The other aspect of designing that I understood was that it’s not wrong for designers to try and improvise an existing solution, with their own perceptions. Usually I disregard a design submission that is very similar to a published post, but this time around I want to bring out the two and spark a debate on the design challenge.

Square Coffee

I’m in love with this electric kettle serving set called Friend’s Coffee. The designer wanted to keep it simple and tame the design aesthetics of traditional hot drink sets. The result is a monolithic design; a kettle and 4 serving mugs all set on a large load tray. The tray can be unplugged at anytime to be properly served from. Beautiful design.

Rolling Out with Heat

Let me tell you something. I’m at the age where I’m looking into saving space at the same time as I’m growing OUT of the life of a college student. You know what that means? It means I’m trying to collect items for my living space that will last, and not just be convenient for me (and my tiny, growing family) in the meantime. Thusly, I’m looking very intently at this project right here: the “Electrolux Invico.” It’s a concept by designer Njegos Lakic in which this device both has the ability to prepare a warm meal AND be put completely away, leaving that extra space when I need it.

Garlic And Onion Totally Cubed

One of the stinkiest jobs in the kitchen is to peel and chop onions and garlic! The pungent smell lingers on my nails inspite of repeated washes! This is why I think we need the Garlizi, a magical kitchen tool that will grind/chop and store the garlic and onion as ready-to-use cubes….like the cheese cubes we buy at stores! A few back-n-forth turns to the wheel and the job is done. Don’t believe me? Watch the video….
