An artistic way to get across to the Chabot Museum in Rotterdam is through this unique installation bridge called Bruggenhoofd Chabot. Brainchild of Snodevormgevers and Paul Segers, this “Landing Craft” allows you to cross over the hedge from the street, and straight into the museum. Just in case you get claustrophobic in the wooden passage way, take the staircase to the upper deck for a breather. The special effects to the deck are enhanced with a bevy of cables running from the balcony to the museum.

The installation will be up at on display in Rotterdam until September 27, 2009 (opposite the Boymans museum). So do check it out! And in case you need to hire it for some time, do give the boys a shout out, I’m sure they will be happy to oblige.

This right here is the Climbing Lamp. It is not alive, contrary to the title. It does appear to be climbing, however, just like a good vine plant wood. The Climbing Lamp is also a kit, the kind of kit that allows you to make your own combinations of angles, attachments, and directions. 8 pieces and a plethora of possibility!

Project : kit lamp
Type : Appel à projet VIA 2009
Location : Paris
Materials : anodized aluminium, frosted polycarbonate and silicone
Client : in search for editor
Project team : Joran Briand
Collaborators : Cockpit prototype
Status : prototype
Reference : Ivy structure

Nice of those people at Trust In Design to provide a list of statistics, wasn’t it? That’s so convenient!

This set runs on florescent fluo tubes contained in strips assembled by you, the user. Simple fixation points allow you to connect the 8 pieces in the set together in a wide range of ways. Fixation points can be connected to basically any surface that will hold the small amount of weight, and each strip can be adjusted to point the light in your optimal direction.

What’s your optimal direction?

While solar power and other such similar “green energy” solutions might very well be the solution to the 36% of carbon dioxide pollution sent up by commercial buildings in Europe, the business owners are reluctant to join the team. What this particular interactive eye on the wall does is to connect the customer to the direct result of the business using environmentally sound solutions – in particular, solar energy.

As the video below shows, this big eye-type of device lights up with pretty colors when you come up on it. Sensor-driven LED lights, that’s what that is. Also in this device is “local” glass and woodcraft, reducing the price of the unit.

This device works in concert with an unnamed solar-power system installed elsewhere on the building. What the device shows is the benefit of the system. With pretty lights and simple-to-read info-graphics, the “Interactive Solar Energy” device displays “the conversion of sun rays into liters of heated water and the power current during the current minute.”

And did I mention there’s pretty colors? Owa-weewa!

NOTE: I just did another entry on solar-powered awesomeness today. Check that one out too, if you’ve got the need for total sunflower speed!

So you’re at Baselworld 2009, just walking around, taking note of all the lovely items. Now, just imagine you’re weightless, in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by tiny little seahorses. Are you there? No. You are at the Swarovski stand, and you are experiencing the “Lake of Shimmer:” hundreds of free-swinging mirrors remotely controlled to remind the viewer of of the brilliant beauty of the crystal. Sooo very glamourous.

Three stories tall standing aside the Swarovski swan on gray, this lake of mirrors makes up the majority of the temporary Baselworld face of the luxury lead crystal glass company. Take a look at the video included in this post for mirrors in action.

“ACK?” – is a signal used in computing to indicate acknowledgement of receipt of a packet, and also a common exclamation of surprise but it’s also the title of the installation that represents the vision of the Milanese practice Pierandrei Associati for which the human space is no longer characterized by a rational juxtaposition of components but by a forest of suspended bamboo and metal tubing.

There’s a whole lot of esoteric rhyme and reason why this exhibit exists but the main gist is a series of sounds naturally reverberating off the hollow tubes of bamboo and metal as you bump into them. You get lost in this world on dynamic sound and light. Perceptions change as I’m sure any would crashing into a bunch of hollow tubes, but the sensorial data stimulates different emotions and connections you share with other visitors in the exhibit. Think of it as a wondrous interactive labyrinth where nature meets technology. Visitors can even leave personal messages on the tubes – the proverbial “I was here!”

The exhibition was on display during Salone del Mobile for Tecno (office furniture) but I’m not sure if you can still see it. Let me put this on my to-do list.

It’s an art gallery! In a nutshell, it’s both a shipping container for artwork and a gallery for the artwork once it reaches it’s destination. Inspired by the work of Marcel Duschamp: perhaps you’ve heard of him. Duschamp created 24 suitcases which he brought with him to display his works of art to places where it would have been unrealistic to bring their larger counterparts. In the same way, this “Box in a Crate” is made in such a way that it might be opened and displayed in a wild array of places, indoors and out.

Each “Box in a Crate” consists of 12 adjacent soft-hinged panels, kind of like a totally unfolded milk carton, minus the milk. The flexibility of the system allows for multiple configurations which is totally great if you’ve got lots of different kinds of art and whatnot.

Such a lovely gallery! I wonder what the strangest dude and artist basically I’ve ever seen or heard of (Marcel Duschamp) would think? He’d probably think about it for a very long time while spinning a bicycle wheel attached to the top of a stool. Straight up.

For the VIVID FESTIVAL in the land Down Under, designer Warren Langley had the installation Vessel of (Horti) Cultural Plenty showcased. Fashioned as this huge pot with plenty of illuminated flowers in it, the installation was smart enough to utilize 84 strand lateral emission fiber optic cables and just three low energy metal halide globes, 450W in total, to create almost 200m of linear light. What was even smarter was the construction of the vessel: vandal resistant materials like galvanized steel & laminated sheet iron and plywood. It must have been a spectacular sight to see.

I forgive you for mistaking this as an art instillation, but I guess that was the whole point behind designing the amazing Yggdrasil Electric Pole. Svenska Kraftnät (the folks who run the Swedish national electrical grid) approved of this design and the poles will be placed as a portal on either side of an entry high way to Stockholm, Sweden. So if you’re making a road trip to Sweden in the year 2010-11, expect to these dynamic poles greet you at the fringe of the cityscape. BTW Yggdrasil refers to the holy world tree in Norse Mythology.

You know the giant metal sculptures of the world-renound sculptor artist Richard Serra? Well get on that! Read and roll! Then come back and see this direct homage (NOT DIRECTLY AFFILIATED) to Serra through room dividing walls. Hangers and all kinds of stuff too! Don’t put these on carpeting or clay. That would just plain spell disaster. Also be wary of hanging any long artwork or photographs.

A personal moment with me, Chris Burns, your humble narrator for this and many other posts:

Have you ever been to Minneapolis? Rich people live in Minneapolis. They do business. Poor people live in Minneapolis, too. They do artwork. If this “Serra” project were made in Minneapolis, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were made by one (the artists), and purchased by the other (the rich.) Happens all the time. ALL the time.

Incidentally, Serra wasn’t conceived or built anywhere near Minneapolis. The 2-B-2 Architecture group is Russian. And these walls were built on Russian soil. Be sure to check out the rest of the work by 2-B-2 available here at Yanko Design. They are totally amazing and splendiferous.

EDIT: My mistake! 2-B-2 are Ukrainian! A thousand apologies!

And lest we forget:

Can you imagine such a setup in your living room?

Paving paradise for a place to sit. That’s what’s going on here. A project from Springtime that saves a seat for your own booty in a play on the culture-cemented idea of a parking space. Part of a design competition that aimed to give a parking space back to the public. “Person Parking” seems to be made for a low-traffic area in a strip mall district, don’t you think?

Text from Springtime:

Duepercinque is a design competition part of the Public Design Festival in Milan. The mission: develop a creative solution for a parking spot of 2×5 meter (due per cinque), returning it to the public domain in a positive way.

I wouldn’t be the guy sitting on the street side of this block, that’s for dang sure. I’d like to see a couch made with this same aesthetic. Maybe minus the cement part.
