My Phone’s Gone Liquid

My Phone’s Gone Liquid

For the ignorant lot, LOHAS is Lifestyles of Health & Sustainability and a way of life for one out of every six Americans. I’m not faffing about this, but LOHAS consumers shop for products based on their values and world view, reflecting their desire for healthier and more sustainable lives. Catering to this crowd is the Aqua Liquid cellphone that uses liquid fuel cells technology in the name of eco-friendliness; although this lowers the efficiency of the phone.

Cardboard Furniture, Surprisng Results

Cardboard Furniture, Surprisng Results

COMPACT is totally sustainable furniture design made from cardboard and recycled polypropylene. The modular solution comes in 5 flat boards which make for easy transport. Assembly should be a cinch if you’re used to IKEA and it’s all held together by interlocking areas that are sealed with wood glue. Configurations are endless, everything from storage, to a work area complete with lighting.

Sow Your Seeds, Grow Your Veggies

Sow Your Seeds, Grow Your Veggies

The idea of DIY VeggiePatch is to get involved in the process of growing vegetables for families and communities and in some ways nip food miles, packaging, food processing, and flood irrigation at the top of the food chain process. The project proposes to reduce eco-footprint by using materials like cardboard, banana paper and tire crumb to construct the patch. The pros of the patch include eliminating the need for transportation, refrigeration, and storage of vegetables plus the health benefits of organic food.

Rock-A-By-Doggie

Rock-A-By-Doggie

I am totally floored by Ilya Fridman’s design for a Dog Hammock. First of all as a dog-lover, I simply adore the idea of getting a pet pooch his own hammock, and to top it off the dog-bed helps in subtly collecting stray dog fur by harnessing the attraction power of static electricity. What a blessing! Ilya also win’s my vote for using recycled materials in the construction of Jamboree.

This Party Is Headed Outdoors

This Party Is Headed Outdoors

I’m done with the Tupperware era where every party and host-gift excited me no end. I’ve come to the point where I think I own almost everything in the catalog. The only way I think the company can infuse a breath of fresh air (pun totally intended!) into their lineup is, if they consider this Compost Concept. Quite contrary to the food-storage options that company is so famous for, the collection pail and outdoor compost bin offers an easy option for those who believe in recycling garbage.

Aqua, Hydra or Simply Water; It Needs To Be Clean

Aqua, Hydra or Simply Water; It Needs To Be Clean

I don’t think I need to highlight the importance of clean drinking water to you elite crowd, but it is a major issue in many developing countries and war-torn zones. When designer Martin Bolton conducted a survey of the potable water that most rural houses in South Africa used, he was appalled at the quality and decided to do something about it. He devised an ingenious Potpaz Ceramic Filter system that is aimed at being a low cost water treatment device optimally suited to South African rural conditions.

S Is For SuperDuper!

S Is For SuperDuper!

No you are not looking at the new Jaguar XF or the Aston Martin Rapide. This is actually the new all-electric Model “S” sedan from often beleaguered Tesla Motors. It is the follow up to the much hyped and groundbreaking Tesla Roadster. This sexy four-door sedan comes loaded with the latest touch-screen technology, sleek styling and enough green karma to choke the Dali Lama. Did we mention it’s entirely electric and not a concept?

Energy Seed: A Yanko Love Story

Energy Seed: A Yanko Love Story

Listen, we all love Sungwoo Park here, don’t deny it. There’s been more than one satisfied reader here on Yanko when it comes to Sungwoo. But this time, the reader took an extra step and became an inspired advocate for action. This reader cum designer, Jerome Demers, took the Sungwoo Energy Seed concept and made it DIY and desktop sized. Don’t you want to play along with the “dead” batteries too?

Greening Up

Greening Up

There’s this whole movement about bringing back nature into the concrete jungles we’ve built in the past 100 years but this is probably the most direct yet indirect way of doing it. Those painted line dividers we see everywhere serve a huge purpose but in an attempt to humanize and naturalize them, designer Ji-Hye Koo covers them with Nature On A Tape – essentially a pre-potted strip of grass that’ll grow with no effort. It’s sculptural and 3-dimensional but who’s gonna trim it tho?

Even Birds Are Going Green

Even Birds Are Going Green

This is a really simple concept but one I want like yesterday. The Solar Birdhouse is exactly what it says. The roof has a solar panel that charges a small battery. At sunset a sensor turns on the illuminated perch, creating a whimsical glow in your garden and hopefully makes it easier for your birdies to get home. The entire thing is made out of gorgeous meranti wood and measures 7.1 x 3.5 x 3.5 inches.

Portable Gardens Can Replace Walking Your Dog

Portable Gardens Can Replace Walking Your Dog

Have a Green Thumb but always rued the lack of space, season or inclination to get your personal green-patch? No worries, the Eden Project is perfectly suited for such situations. It’s a scheme where you get to take home your own patch of garden for a while, tend to it and then bring it back to the community Green House, which is centrally located. It’s almost like owning a part-time garden that’s on a set of wheels and is very un-demanding.
