A flat iron review? Are you serious? Yes I’m TOTALLY FOR SERIOUS. The KQC Turbo Generation II isn’t just any flat iron. It comes with a slew of promises from faster, safer heating to protecting your hair while straightening it. Any of you privy to the experience of professional irons know there is a huge difference between a $200+ iron and a $30+ iron. Hit the jump and I’ll explain why this $200+ iron is a must have for anyone who regularly straightens their hair.

Straightening hair is damaging. Hair is strong but it wasn’t meant to be heated up at over 100ºF over and over. All irons have the same basic construction – a tong shaped tool with two metal plates that sandwich hair between them. The KQC Turbo II is different because the plates are ceramic and tourmaline. Ceramic performs as well as metal but creates a reaction when in contact with protein – the chief compound of hair. The resulting negative ions seal in moisture and protect the hair shaft, two benefits you can’t get from metal plates. Tourmaline is a mineral gemstone that evenly conducts heat preventing static which is a huge problem with cheaper irons.

Since I’m Asian, my hair is pretty straight. I only straighten it to produce certain styles. To put the KQC Turbo II to the test, I asked my friend Manaja to be my test subject – or rather her hair. Manaja’s hair texture is dense and curly. She’s straightened her hair before but avoids it because it breaks easily. I had already used the iron on myself so I gave her my assurance.

This iron is a dream to work with. It’s incredibly lightweight (thanks to ceramics) and heats up insanely fast (also thanks to ceramics). All I did to prep was brush Manaja’s hair and mist it with a heat protectant. As soon as I clamped the iron down on her hair, none of the sizzling or steaming prevalent in cheaper irons appeared. In under 20 minutes her thick hair was straightened. It would normally take her close to an hour with a regular iron. Her hair came out extremely silky and shiny and to her surprise and relief – no breakage.

What we loved:

Ceramic and tourmaline technology unique to KQC

Quick to heat up, quick to cool down

Comes with safety stand and pouch for travel

Extremely lightweight

Affordable considering cost of other professional irons

Easy to clean

Multiple heat settings

What could be improved:

Longer cord

The general referral to “sex toys” is always a crass, overrated innuendo towards dark guilty pleasures. Adding a certain degree of maturity and respectability to this industry is the Genesis line of products for Luxury-Pleasures. Inspired by the theory that God created the world in seven days, this collection includes seven deadly sins that will break the shackles of missionary and treat you to untold ecstasies. For each day of the week you can assign your special erotica and play God yourself.

Original Text:

On the first day God created light.

Dildo, hot wax candle made with white beeswax and silver base.
Beeswax symbolizes the virgin flesh of Christ and the Virgin Mary.
Candles: white beeswax.
Base: polished solid silver.

The second day God created the sky.

The choice of colors is very particular: The blue sky representing Virgin Mary. She is often depicted with a blue coat called maphorion. Green is also used to represent the Virgin with the Child Jesus. The red roses are a symbol of virginity. Blind fold inspired by the stole of the priest.
Blue silk and silk embroidered from St Gallen, Switzerland (Haute Couture).

On the third day God created vegetation.

The ring symbolizes the union between God and Man. It is made in black ebony like most Black Madonnas. These figures are associated with rites of fertility and sexuality. The choker necklace is made specifically with thirty three links like the Rosary of Precious Blood which contains thirty three grains referring to the years of earthly life of Jesus.
Cock Ring: black ebony from Gabon. Hand made.
Necklace: Solid Silver.

On the fourth day God created the stars.

Horn inspired by the crescent moon, symbol of regeneration. Moses is often depicted with horns symbols of strength and wisdom, which are also symbols for the Devil and destruction.
Hand-made Glass Dildo with 23 carats gold leaf.

On the fifth day God created birds and fishes.

Inspired by St. Francis who talked to birds and animals, and who wore a scapular (devotional necklace made of small pieces of fabric that some priests wear on their chests and on their back on top of their clothing). The rooster feathers symbolizes the arrival and resurrection of Jesus. In medieval liturgy, priests used a broom made of feathers (flabellum) to sweep the air and symbolize the heavenly powers who supported Jesus during the night of his death. Necklace for caressing and tickling; made in solid silver, pink gold and rooster feathers.

On the sixth day God created Man.

The marble refers to death like the altar in the church represents the Holly Sepulchre. It contains 39 braids, the maximum number of lashes in religious punishments in Jesus’ time. The whip is made with human hair with silver ligatures and Carrara marble.

The seventh day is the rest.

The diary starts with the first 7 days of Genesis written by St. Jerome, from the first printed edition of the Gutenberg Bible. It is followed by 365 pages to write a diary about your own sins and fantasies.
Dairy: Cover: black lamb leather with artisanal binding.
40g paper referred as “bible” type.

You love the cold water. For when you want ice in a nice place, there is the “Iced Carafe.” Design team “Officeoriginair” brings you what’s basically a simple contraption, made simply for having wonderful time! Molded plastic with a rubber stopper, made in such a fashion that if you freeze an amount of water in the bottle while it’s on it’s side, the ice will stay put!

Full on cold your entire drink experience.

The ice. It sticks to the inside of the bottle, on the side. It makes the whole drink cold. The whole time you drink it. And if you just sit there and wait to see if the ice will fall off into your drink, you’ll notice that once it does, it’s still a giant hunk of ice, a vertical piece of ice, which is still keeping your drink cold.

Okay I need to spread the word. A few months ago the OXO company sent me a bunch of their OXO Pop containers for review. I’ve never been one to store things in containers because I only buy enough of anything for immediate use. But things like cereals, rice, and pasta are bulk items. I’ve been on a container storing binge because the OXO Pop containers actually work. Hey, they won the Red Dot 2008 Product Design Award so there’s way more than meets the eye here.

They’re airtight, stackable and space-efficient, making it easy to keep your dry foods fresh and your kitchen organized. The Containers have a unique push-button mechanism that creates an airtight seal with just one touch. The button also serves as a handle to lift off the lid. The Containers are designed for modular stacking so you can efficiently organize your countertop and pantry.

They come in a huge assortment of sizes for all your storage needs. All Pop containers are BPA free too which is a huge concern in plastics technology today – for your health and environment. The real test is how long my foods could stay fresh. THE CEREAL TEST.

The Pop containers proclaim the air tight seal created when you press and lock the lid can keep things fresher, in this case my cereals which tend to lose their satisfying crunch after 2 weeks. HERE THIS, it’s been 2 months and they’re still as crunchy and delicious as day 1.

What we liked:

BPA free plastic

Satisfying “click” when you seal the containers

Great modular design, stackable, dishwasher safe

What could be improved:

A bit pricey especially if you invest in a large set ($10-$17 each)

More color options for easy color coding

More design options like black or metal tops

Walk into any supermarket today and you’ll see a new trend. People are bringing their own shopping bags. With plastic bags labeled as the evil accomplice to the environmental problem, a number of companies have taken it upon themselves to design grocery bags durable enough for hauling while remaining questionably stylish. After all, being “green” is now a message people want to project so shopping bags have had to evolve into accessories. I’ve been using the Moukisac shopping bag for the past few months and it promises utilitarian chic. The Moukisac is made of a nice suede-like material about the size of a small satchel. Inside are 4 mesh bags of varying sizes to hold nuts, seeds, grains, produce, and perishable goods. The satchel unfurls into a larger bag and the flap become a smaller bag itself. In total you have 6 bags.

In practice the bags work fine. Just fill them up and put everything in the larger bag to haul home. The concept is simple so I have no complaints there. My only one complaint is the build quality. The main bag is only single stitched which over time will not be able to withstand the constant tension and weight of groceries. A double stitch or better yet, overlock stitch would have made it much more durable.

What we liked:

A color for every personality.

Nice suede-like material and it’s washable.

Strong stretchy mesh bags.

Lots of potential storage that neatly folds up into a small satchel.

Super affordable.

What could be improved:

Build quality. Single stitch is too weak

Perhaps I’m being too picky since I’m a fashion designer; I notice textile and garment construction with a surgeon’s eye. The Moukisac really is a fine bag and the number of compliments I received while standing in line proved it so. Would I buy it? Yes, yes I would.

I have semi-longish hair and blow dry almost every other day. It’s a known fact blow drying actually distresses and damages hair so doing it sparingly is key, but if you can’t avoid the heat, the Remington Shine Therapy Dryer may just be the ticket to healthier, shinier hair.

The Remington Shine Therapy dryer was a 2008 IDEA award finalist. Designed by Michael Nickel of Spectrum Brand, Inc., The Shine Therapy Dryer is a revolutionary hair dryer that applies a user-controlled vitamin moisturizing mist to the hair while drying. You just hold a button at the top of the handle to apply the moisturizing mist to the hair while styling. Sounds easy enough but does it work?

I’ve been using it for a month now and yes it does work. My hair is noticeably softer and shinier, but not without a little hard work. The Shine Therapy Dryer is a salon pro level tool. It has 2 power settings and 3 heat levels. The design is modern and feminine – which is expected given the target audience. It’s quite heavy but balances well in the hand. The moisturizing mist comes from a replaceable cartridge with just enough juice to last a month, if you use it every day. Two come with the dryer so at least you’ll get some use out of it to notice a difference. The mist is packed with vitamin E and avocado extracts and imparts a shampoo-like smell. It’s not heavy or greasy. In fact, the mist is so fine, I couldn’t even tell it was spraying.

You can find the Shine Therapy Dryer in most stores hovering between $40-50. If you’re in the market for a salon level hair dryer – go for it, but if the added weight and bulkiness puts you off, save your money for a pro Vidal Sassoon or Chi hair dryer.

What we liked:

Modern design.

Salon level quality.

Affordable for a pro level hair dryer.

Comes with a directional attachment.

Well balanced in hand.

What could be improved:

The rocker switches are too sensitive. It’s easy to press them while holding the dryer.

Shine cartridges are more cumbersome than useful. Leave-in conditioner before blow dry will achieve the same results.

No visual indication of when mist cartridge is low or out.

Diana Lin Design LLC designs and manufacturers award-winning products that push the boundaries of innovative design techniques such as their dºlight Huggable pillow. How excited was I when I opened a package to a glowing pillow!

You may have seen it making the rounds in blogs and magazines a few months ago but actually touching one and squishing it is a different experience. The shell is just a thick mesh fabric holding in an armful of silicon gel balls each with its own LED. There’s a pull string in the back to turn on the lights. It’s powered by a couple of AA’s but also comes with a small ac adapter.

Impractical? Just a little. Although it’s soft, it’s much heavier than a normal batting stuffed pillow but that’s not the point. It’s more decor than functional pillow – something to slink on the couch whenever guests visit. It’s definitely a conversational starter inviting curiosity with oohs and ahhs. Everyone wants to touch it as they try to figure out what’s inside.

To my surprise the pillow doesn’t get hot. In fact it doesn’t even get warm. After all, LEDs produce a lot of heat but these are low powered so it seems that negates any awkward sensations. It also seems to last quite awhile. I’ve left the pillow on 48 hours straight on batteries and it’s still as bright as ever.

Design like this doesn’t come cheap. $160 is pricey but they do come in a range of colors. I like it but I just wish it were softer, closer to a plush pillow. I’m a sucker for anything that glows tho so if you’re like me, shelling out a little cash for something like this is, as Martha Stewart puts it, “a good thing”.
