Oh the lazy days of summer… While many of you are sweating from global warming and counting down the days till the iPhone 3G is set free, or maybe you have a life and are packing a bag for the long holiday weekend here in the US, I have nothing better to do than to deliver this weeks all important, randomly placed, weekly installment of YD’s Design Digest; A compendium of easily digestible design delights from around the inter-webs. This first week in July has some pretty hot items to gaze your wandering eyes on.

Item #1 is a good rule of thumb and pencil. The “Split Ruler” by Japanese designers Cina, is a ruler that neatly houses your pencil for getting things straight and holding your wood.

Item #2 will make you the life of the party at your next trip through airport security. “The Koffski” by Nina Voss is basically a Murse (man-purse) shaped like a gun holster in a vain attempt to butch up the fact that you are walking around with a MURSE!!!

Item #3 is located in the last place you want to be this hot summer, Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Trust me, I grew up right down the street in Miami and it is hot as balls during July and August. Luckily this new W Hotel by Clodagh is the coolest thing since Sonny Crocket.

Item #4 takes inspiration from an origami swan. Designer Damian Kozlik dreamed up this polypropylene chair named “Iga” features storage spaces in its arms, perfect for your stuff and other stuff.

Tuesdays, the most boring day of the week. I mean, whatever happens on a Tuesday anyway? Sure, they release new music and movies on DVD but thats pretty much it. Except today is also the day for the all important, randomly placed weekly installment of YD’s Design Digest; A compendium of easily digestible design delights from around the inter-webs.

Round 1 has us all suffering from a case of sticker shock. These artsy-fartsy auto stickers by INFECTIOUS. They teamed up with artist from around the globe to brighten up those tired looking cars on every block. Nothing says “look at me, look at me” like a giant pink bunny on your 1995 Honda Civic.

Round 2 is a glimpse into the past with this “Ammonite” washbasin from HighTech. Inspired by ammonites (hence the name), this concrete sink is perfect for washing your face caveman style and wondering if water really does drain clockwise in Southern Pangea.

Round 3 is the bee’s knees of architecture in Slovenia. This public housing project takes its cues from the modular honeycomb clusters of a beehive. I bet the inside is just as sweet… (rim shot)

Round 4 is something I would bet my left eye ball looks much much better in person than in these photos. Stand way back because this “Sunny Day” installation by Aleksandra Stratimirovic is made of over four thousand glass medical phials filled with coloured liquids, which combine to produce any number of stunning images really only comes to life from a distance.

Well it is Thursday once again and you know what that means..? yeah, neither do I but here is this weeks installment of YD’s Design Digest; A compendium of easily digestible design delights from around the inter-webs. First up on the hit parade, Scott Amron brings us his “Clock”design… yup, it’s a clock with extra bits thrown in for poops and giggles.

Scott likes to call these extra bits BOM (Bill Of Materials). He believes these extra bits makes this “design” interesting and worth $450. What do you think?

Be your own Lord of the Flies with this extra sweet fly killing device or “swatter”. Denis Belenko and Alexandr Brazhenskiy like to call it the “fly swatter 1:1000″. I think they are referring to the fact that you will have a 1 in 1000 chance of hitting anything.

Sunnin Tokyo Dresser sounds like a really cool cabaret act, but in fact it’s a really cool cascading drawer set that pivots better than Kobe in the paint(basketball reference…just trying to butch you all up a bit).

Leave it to the Turks to design a building clad in brail inspired shields for television stations and a newspaper… I have no idea if that was meant as a slant on Turks but this media center in Ankara sure is a wonderful sight and the apple of Tabanlioglu Architects eyes.

Well the Olympics are almost upon us and nothing says I’m excited about Curling like this Olympic Powerstrip by Yar Rassadin. He has captured the spirit of the games by pitting your electrical gadgets against each other for fame, glory and a steroid scandal.

It’s that time of the week again so get those limited attention spans ready. It is time for the YD Design Digest; A compendium of easily digestible design delights from around the inter-webs. Sleeves are the new skins when it comes to keeping your computers cozy, this “F84 Mac Air Sleeve” by Freitag fits like a glove.

What better way to pretend you live in the early 1900s then to sit on a rocking chair and needle point to your favorite radio show? Well with Soft Tunes by David Gillblom, you can combine two of your favorite turn-of-the-century pastimes into one. This radio design is made of linen and is tuned by your needles stitch or puncture… ah, needles and punk rock go together like pees and carrots.

What better way to inspire creativity in a work space then to remind us all of the torment that was high school? Well that was sort of the point of this design for KULT Offices in Singapore. This workplace, inspired by science labs, is perfect for day dreaming about what to have for lunch or what to wear tomorrow.

Brush up on your Alice and Wonderland when entering the London Underground system. That’s where you will find this Studio 8 Architects’ tunnel installation. Tucked between honeycomb cardboard panels symbolic of stalks and twigs, white rolls of recycled garments protrude like the heads of hundreds of roses. Just as the gardeners painted the roses in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Once again it is time for the YD Design Digest; A compendium of easily digestible design delights from around the inter-webs. First up is this yummy looking sofa design by designer Ron Arad. Called the “Do Lo Res”, this sofa is a set of separate chocolate looking cubes anchored at the base.

It’s election time (no, not that election) Absolut Vodka’s “ABSOLUT ELEMENTS 2008″ has posted their finalist and they need your vote. Check out the finalist and make some lucky designer happier than a drunk on New Years Eve.

Counting sheep has never been more stylish than doing it in this uber-chic sheep stable dubbed appropriately “Sheepstable” by 70F Architecture. Located in Almere, the Netherlands, this space was intended mostly for educational purposes with easy and up-close access. Apart from the public function, the Muslim community will be able to buy the lambs they need for yearly ritual purposes.

Who knew LED technology could be so FUN? Check out the newest star in Los Angeles, the Ferris Wheel at the Santa Monica Pier has just had a major face lift which includes over 160,000 LED lights. Partly powered via solar panels, the giant wheel is a much more brilliant and energy efficient spectacle.

Life’s stories are about perspective. That is the basic premise behind Italian designer Joe Velluto’s “M.A.S.T.” installation containing a video performance that could be watched from a number of positions. M.A.S.T. – Modulo Abilitativo Sensoriale Transitivo or Transitive Sensory Living Module was commissioned by floor coverings brand Novabell. Why? Not really sure… I guess I need to see it from their perspective.

Good news everyone! Yanko Design just had a Pause Button installed on our forward looking crystal ball. We are usually looking so far into the future we barely realize our present. So to balance our karmic design energies, we present you this weeks Yanko Design Digest. A compendium of easily digestible design delights from around the globe.

Behind the iron curtain (actually it’s stainless steel mesh) Design studio Regina Dahmen-Ingenhoven designed a transparent veil to showcase the Swarovski factory in Austria. Take a bow Swarovski.

California College of the Arts student Kimberly Kulka brings us this “Newspaper Chair”. A politically correct edit of rolled newspapers and magazines that combine for a structurally and environmentally sound design.

Codependence has never looked so good with this “Powerchair” by Guillaume Drapier. Without each other to lean on, this multi-chair design would simply be a pile of firewood.

China has a new winged dragon and it looks a lot like their brand new Beijing International Airport designed by Foster + Partners. The low down? It’s beautiful for sure, but more impressive is it’s the first building to break the one million square meter barrier, it will accommodate an estimated 50 million passengers per annum by 2020.

iCover by Nick Ross. The iCover discards the unnecessary branding of the distinct iPod earphones and replaces it with coffin covers symbolising the killing off of the visual branding of the product.

Cycle Bag by Iohanna Pani. A bike saddle that can be carried as a backpack and prevents your bike saddle to be stolen.

Burberry Mixer by Peter Andersson. A high fashion hand mixer. Who says that simple kitchen things can´t look good? This concept runs on a battery that can be recharged with the dock that comes with it.
