The list that you see here reflects how the designers have incorporated a simplistic every-day value to their complex technological design. In my mind I see the common thread of mundane objects being inspirational and incidental. Can you see the beautiful lampshade in the Gramo or the pots in the Sound Eggs? I do, I’m just waiting for you to catch up with me!

An Encore For The Opus Design Winners

The winners of the Opus Design Award were announced recently and the entries might help solve a lot of our little nagging problems with eyewear.  The gold prize went to Nick Jinkinson who designed around transition lenses that more completely transitioned in the sun.  Runners up include foldout frames, built in lens cleaner, and what can only appear to be the Opti-Grab from the 1979 comedy The Jerk.  Let’s hope none of them cause wearers to become permanently and irreversibly cross-eyed.

London Tap Water, Now With 100% More Glass

The London On Tap competition posted its shortlist of finalists this past week. The competition sought unique carafe designs that would encourage Londoners to drink plain tap water rather than over priced, over packaged bottled water. To wit, London tap water is 500 times cheaper than the average bottled alternative and involves 300 times less CO2 to process. The featured one here (read: my pick for winner) was done by Matthew Fiddimore and references the Thames with its plunging spout.

C’N’C “Plug Generation” Contest

C’N’C invites you to join in on the fun with their “Plug Generation” Contest. Think about how you would interpret the slogan “C’N’C Plug Generation”, by using original artistic techniques such as photos, murals, stickers, video, sculptures or composite and send it in to C’N’C. The winners will have the once in a lifetime opportunity to have their creations used as graphics on T-shirts and accessories and showcased during Milan’s Fashion Week in February 2009.

What is it about martini glasses that people find so attractive? Is it the precarious nature of their original design, forcing you to step ever-so-gently and methodically as to not lose a single drop of alcohol goodness? Makes you wonder if the original martini glass silhouette was not purposefully awkward. If you are forced to treat something like it is a precious cargo, will you start to believe it actually is precious cargo? Therefore, psychologically elevating its value?

Be Creative. Interior Design Competition

The Phoenix Contemporary Design Fair (PCDF) and kontakt magazine invite independent furniture designers to submit original furniture designs for a design competition. Conceived as a way to connect talented independent designers with furniture resellers and a design savvy public, finalists’ submissions will be displayed in a special section at PCDF and selected designers will be featured in kontakt magazine.
