So you’re at Baselworld 2009, just walking around, taking note of all the lovely items. Now, just imagine you’re weightless, in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by tiny little seahorses. Are you there? No. You are at the Swarovski stand, and you are experiencing the “Lake of Shimmer:” hundreds of free-swinging mirrors remotely controlled to remind the viewer of of the brilliant beauty of the crystal. Sooo very glamourous.

Three stories tall standing aside the Swarovski swan on gray, this lake of mirrors makes up the majority of the temporary Baselworld face of the luxury lead crystal glass company. Take a look at the video included in this post for mirrors in action.

Not for long, anyway; not at this rate. According to the design group in charge of this project, 60% of urban water consumption goes toward landscaping. Quite simply, this is because of what’s called “traditional lawns,” aka, lush green grass that doesn’t naturally grow well in untended-by-humans California. The alternative is “California native gardens,” those which are easy to tend to, cheaper than the alternatives, and don’t suck up the H20 supplies at anywhere near the current rate. Here’s the campaign to save LA.

See below for images of this campaign. It delivers quick, easy info on what’s going on, what the alternatives are, and how to make the goodness happen. As it turns out, saving Los Angeles from itself is really quite colorful!

Build Awareness: Educate the public on the LA water supply.

Present Alternatives: What people can use instead of “traditional lawns” in their yard, aka switch to a drought-resistant California lawn.

Provide Resources: Tell em how to do it.

The CalArts Design Team working on this project is as follows:
Eileen Hsu, PMFA Graphic Design
Pouya Jahanshahi, PMFA Graphic Design
Manuel Garcia, BFA 4 Graphic Design
Masato Nakada, MFA 1 Graphic Design
Michelle Park, BFA 4 Graphic Design
Maece Seirafi, MFA 1 Graphic Design

Here’s a concept closer to advertising than Yanko usually likes to get, but it’s for an extremely important cause: endangered wild animals. Animals that, given the chance, would rip your freaking head off! But they are endangered. So do not kill them, please. Instead, ADDI design group wishes for you to design products for those deadly beasts who need to be saved for extinction.

Won’t you design?

Generally I don’t do direct quotes, as it leads to total theft! But in this case, let’s be socialistic about this information, because it’s important that everyone have it:

[Animal Concept] A dog who lives most of it´s days carried around in an expensive handbag, doesn´t need a cammoflague hoddie and a small cap over it´s ears. There are a few others who we should give at least the same attention.

This concept is not a solution for the endangered species, It´s purpose is to show one of the many areas where people could have done something good with our knowlage, instead we keep our eyes closed. Hopefully you won´t support cheap crap anymore, save your money for those who really need to be saved.

So take notes:

The Polarbears are drowning because of the ice that are melting. They have to swim up to 100 km to find food. Global warming needs to be stopped.

and

Because of illegal hunting, The Bengal Tiger have drasticly reduced in numbers by 95% since 1910. Please don´t shoot!

Save the woodlands.
Save the rain forest.
Save the caps.

Too Soon? Seemingly Recession-Proof Aston Martin Presents the Luxury “One-77″

Literally hand-crafted features, production of only 77 units (that’s 77 cars made, ever,) and cost around a couple million dollars. Is this for real? Aston Martin creates a designer dream-car that defies the imagination of the middle class and acts as a masthead for the company:

“all [the] beauty we could bring to a car.”

Aston Martin says this is no mere car, but ‘possibly the world’s most desirable automotive art form’:

Marek Reichmann and his design team have sculpted the One-77 so that it is still instantly recognisably an Aston Martin, but with hints of a new design language.

The significance of the One-77 name, which won’t be used for production cars, is that Aston intends to build no more than 77 cars. The exact number is believed to have been chosen because of CEO Ulrich Bez’s belief in ‘lucky 7’. Car assembly is likely to be at Gaydon, though the V12 engine will come from Aston’s dedicated engine facility in Cologne.

Aston wants to show the car to potential customers by the end of the year, with the potential for the first production cars to roll out of Gaydon by the end of 2009.

Can we expect our rapper-friends to be holding one of these in their pocket(s)? What about our politicians and TV personalities? What kind of person buys a car like this? Investors? Perhaps the same people who buy astronomically expensive art pieces where the pricetag is the artwork?

If you’re looking to be one of the lucky (and rich) buyers of the Aston Martin One-77, you may already be too late. Aston claims that over 100 wealthy buyers have signed up for the One-77 supercar, though it plans to build only enough to satisfy the car’s label: 77. Amazingly, those customers have dropped a £200,000 deposit without ever having so much as seen a totally uncovered photo of the British supercar. But hey, it’s an Aston, so how ugly can it be? If you’ve got money to burn, we can think of few ways to better spend over £1 million on an automobile, especially considering that it’s rare enough to actually increase in value over time.

A car that increases in value is something I like to hear about. As a person who’s a lover of ingenuity and progress, you’d be surprised how much I support the preservation of excellent old things. If and when this car makes it off the assembly block, I suppose nothing less than it to become a collectors car. Does this car push forward the automotive industry in a way that’s healthy?

I think about the fact that I’ll never see one in person, much less be able to own or drive one.

What do you think?

1. Is this a slap in our recessing face?

2. Or is it a great day for the automotive industry?

And, most importantly I think: as some of you mentioned in a possibly related post, [should we really be designing the perfect form for a product that should be on it's way out?]

Origami is one of the oldest forms of Japanese design. The Japanese origin began in the 6th century when Buddhist monks from China carried paper to Japan. Maybe they just wanted to annoy the Japanese by paying them in folded money that was nearly impossible to unfold, who knows. The planning and genius use of a single material to create a an intricate silhouette or design is probably one of the most challenging for any designer. Maone Bank of Brazil commissioned advertising agency DCS and created this clever use of local currency to illustrate how your money should multiply along with your family.
