Carrying a purse or bag while riding a bicycle has been restrictive thus far. What I mean is that either you end up carrying a backpack or have those geeky baskets in front of the handlebars. Revolutionizing the way we carry our stuff is this absolutely fashionable set, simply called the Handlebar Bag & Bike Rack Bag. What I love is the way it hooks onto the bike, and then simply comes off as an elegant bag; loops, extra straps, and attachment clips detach and can be hidden.

Summer’s up and as most of you design students must be getting ready to buy supplies for the new term. Before you head out for a new backpack, just browse through this prized collection. I know most of them are just concepts, but they are unique, exciting and desirable.

10) Reppo II Boombox backpack by Joonas Saaranen

Here’s how to look to like a cool kid with his music on the go. A hardshell backpack with built-in speakers, this ones gonna make you popular.

9) City Bag and City Briefcase by Jerome Olivet

As expected of an apprentice of design master Philippe Starck, Jerome Olivet lives up to the reputation of “futuristic and abstruse” designing with this collection. The City Bag is what we are more interested in, and it scores well on the iPod and Mobile Phone compatibility front.

8 ) Velina Volante Backpack by Jannita van den Haak

Styled for the ladies, this sexy, waterproof bag looks trendy and has pleated compartments to make more space. The cool pocket on top is detachable and doubles up as a evening bag.

7) Boxcooler Backpack Fridge by Sebastian Bertram

Students are hungry ALL the time. So carry your food on campus in this suave Boxcooler Backpack which includes a fridge with picnic dishes. Let’s binge!

6) Arrow Backpack by Notus Design

With all the weight of books and supplies that you need to carry these days, a good spine-supporting backpack is a must. In fact I think it should be laid down as a ground rule. Arrow Backpack does this quite effectively. Support the spine.

5) Peach by Yen-Hsiang Skeet Wang

No comments, but looks like some people with a good sense of humor may be able to pull-off this stunt. Sure become the Butt of a joke!

4) Carga Messenger Bags

Carga is a detour from the backpack countdown. But going by Long Tran’s review it’s of worthy mention. It’s hard to find a good looking bag that can hold all the contents (junk included) we are so used to lugging along. Carga fits the bill; now only if we could have it as a backpack!

3) Modular Travel Bag by Teo Song Wei

I like this bag, it comes with a basic skeleton and you add on modules that you only deem fit for the day. Nothing extra, only the basics.

2) Flo Backpack by Ivan Huber

A backpack that withstands the vigor of city life. Hardshell, modular, ergonomic and what not; it comes in three sizes the urban day pack, the weekender, and the 5-day trekker – that quickly snap into the universal Flo frame.

1) Arret a Porter – Wearable Design by Jimin Kim

Wicked design and yes this ain’t a backpack, but a ‘hands-free handbag’ project. Let’s see what’s up her sleeve.

A shopping bag is a bag and nothing more, unless you peak it up with some special effects. Regenesi’s Fruit Bag’s claim to fame is the ingenious use of reclaimed leather, specially sourced from Salamander. The smooth marriage of Italian flamboyance and Japanese practicality is evident in the characteristics of the shopper. Comfortable handles that sit easy on the shoulders and a series of internal pockets render it functional and secure. Because it uses regenerated leather, the bag guarantees durability, color resistance both to light and rubbing and a smooth surface.

Dimensions: Length cm. 30 x Height cm. 35 x Width cm. 10

The material: The regenerated leather produced by Salamander is entirely made of natural raw materials: genuine leather fibers tanned with vegetal substances, natural latex (extracted from rubber plants), water, natural fats and natural coloring agents and salts.

I’m a veteran when it comes to traveling with kids and I know the nightmarish times I went through every time I ventured out. Cranky, jet lagged babies + luggage management is horrid combo. Try pushing a buggy and pulling your trolley bag at the same time! Dreadful! Good folks at Castiglione Morelli have an ingenious idea with their Samsonite Convertible Trolley Stroller Bag. A specialized compartment holds in a folded fabric, which when pulled out, stretches over the pull-out metallic frame; thus resulting in a child seat. Very Convenient.

Vegan Leather? Matt & Nat Archive Bag Review

In my never ending quest for the perfect laptop bag, I stumbled across a French Canadian company called Matt & Nat who have an entire line of soft goods but it was their Archive bag that caught my eye. It’s all vegan leather which is an oxymoron so just think of it as faux leather – really good faux leather. Hit the jump for me review.

For a faux leather bag that commands an almost “real” leather price tag, quality better be good. Thankfully Matt & Nat’s quality is top tier. It looks like leather, feels like leather, and smells like leather. The grain is smooth without the nasty cracking. It’s incredibly soft and when placed right next to a Louis Vuitton bag, you’d be hard pressed to differentiate quality.

The Archive has a light grey faux suede lining, tone on tone stitching, and brushed nickel hardware. Utilitarian fans rejoice because there are enough zip enclosures, pockets, flaps, nooks and crannies to carry everything from a 17″ laptop to cables, mobile phone, stationary, and accessories. I’ve been toting it around with my MacBook Pro for a month and it still looks brand new. The only noticeable change is the bag getting softer which I’m all for. There’s a detachable shoulder strap too but I prefer to carry it as a briefcase or manbag – whatever you want to call it.

There are 3 colors to choose from, white, grey, and black. The Archive measure 19″ X 16″ X 3.75″ and costs $315. If you need something that’s functional and stylish, leave the ordinary laptop carriers at home. Splurge and get the Archive. It’s absolutely gorgeous inside and out.

Airlines really know how to ruin your vacations and I’m not just talking about flight delays. On my last trip Down Under they managed to screw up not one, but two of my luggage pieces. Thankfully they DID replace both of them, but to be fair for some part my suitcases were to be blamed as well. They were definitely not as sturdy as this Alliance Modular luggage that we see here.

This attractive trolley transforms into a valet when zipped open and has enough capacity to hold all your weekend stuff. Shoes-fetish people will love that extra box where you can load em Choos. It may not be the Setgo Rack, but its an interesting option.

Need a duffle bag that’s sleek, nondescript, and functional? The Setgo Rack may be the bag for you. The company recently (Nov. ‘08) updated their inventory with 12 new products for the urban go-getter. They were kind enough to send me the Rack bag to try out. I was on vacation prior and now wish I had the bag beforehand because it turns out, is quite sharp and utilitarian. Hit the jump for my review.

Although the bag was design specifically for gym gear, who’s got time to do that when you spend almost every waking hour trying to find cool concepts to post here! So I did what any creative whiz kid does (indulge me here it’s not arrogance, it’s called a self-esteem boost), I repurposed the bag as a small weekender. If that fashion term escapes you – think big enough to hold just what you need and then some. I had a trip planned to New York in preparations for fashion week. The Rack became a repository for a pair of shoes, point-and-shoot camera, scarf (knitted myself thank you), gloves, water and snacks.

The NYC area was FREEZING earlier this year. Rain, ice, and even a little bit of snow were my company and the Rack bag which at first glimpse seems a bit “thin” and flimsy stood up very well to the rigors of urban travel.

I’m not quite sure how much volume it holds but you get the general idea by how much stuff I placed in it. There are a few small compartments I used for keys and a very cold iPhone (thanks to its metal construction). Perhaps the best part was breezing thru the airport as carry-on; gave me a chance to inspect how well it held up. The nylon material is atypical and exactly what you’d expect. The stitching is plenty strong but there is one caveat… the price.

Setgo prices it at $100 even which I think is just a tad expensive but in their defense, TUMI sells similar bags for $250 and up. I would go out on a limb and say both companies sell products of comparable quality.

What I liked:

Super durable

Nondescript design for men and women

Enough space for a pair of shoes and a day’s change of clothes

Surprisingly it’s a little waterproof. Melted snow never seeped in

What could be improved:

Price, about $20 too much

Or use a more exotic material to justify the price, I’m thinking waxed cotton

Greener Shopping, Flip & Tumble Loopt Review

Looking to abandon disposable plastic bags at the grocery store? Have a looksie at the Flip & Tumble Loopt before you decide. Hit the jump to read my lightening review, GO!

What we liked:

Super cheap compared to hemp canvas bags, $6

Durable – the stretchy plastic makes stuffing this bag easy

Built in rubber band keeps bags neat and tidy

Array of colors, easy for categorizing foods

Easy to wash and dry since it’s plastic

What could be improved:

We question the use of plastic, haha!

I’ve been using them for over a month on weekly grocery trips. Don’t be fooled by how thin they are. They hold a lot. To give you an idea, one bag was enough to hold a head of lettuce, 32 oz can of broth, 3 apples, 2 oranges, a bag of grapes, 2 bunches of kale, and a bunch of carrots. They’re no more convenient than canvas bags and I never spend the time to carefully roll them up into the built-in bands. If you haven’t already made the switch to reusable bags, I’d recommend these since they’re so much easier to wash and especially dry than bags made hemp and cotton.
