Specs-wise, it’s really up to a designer’s imagination; that’s the advantages of concepts. Realistically speaking, playing around with the materials used in an innovative way is kind of restrictive. Radio FM follows the norm of an object by appearing to be this rigid ceramic piece, but in reality the body is an enigmatic fluid PVC sail and is flexible. The controls are cleverly hidden underneath the device and simple; a button to switch it on and a dial to tune in the frequency. Can anything get simpler than that!

Quick Facts:

FM frequencies reach from 87,5 till 108 MHz.

The radio is portable because it operates on 3 penlight batteries. (included)

Limited series of 50 pieces @ € 150 each.

A lamppost powered by trash seems like a strange idea but if you think about the ratio between city trash and energy needs – things start to make sense, kinda. This lamppost composts trash and uses the methane byproduct as a fuel to power the lamps. The compost can then be retrieved to re-green our cities. I like the idea but it’s not clear how much trash is needed to keep such a system going.

Have you ever slept at the airport? I sure haven’t. The very idea scares the pee out of me. Some people do, though, and those people are crazy. For those of us who want the convenience of sleeping at the airport, without so much of the crazy, there’s these amazing things right here! “Sleep Box” they go by the name of, designed by Arch Group for those who need private time in strange, unfriendly places!

There’s a thousand instances where the ideal personal cubical could come in handy. Here’s one of them: the airport. In between flights, what do you do? Sit in some marginally comfortable seats. Lots of time in between flights, what do you do? Sleep box.

The box itself is 2mx1.4mx2.3m. The main bed is 2×0.6m, equipped with an automatic system which changes the linens (think Fifth Element.) The bed is a soft, flexible strip of polymer and pulp tissue.

Ventilation system, sound alerts, built-in LCD television, wireless internet access, power sockets, extra luggage space under lounges. Payment is made in time, anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours.

The rest I leave up to your imagination!

Seoul metro stations still use old school ad boards but designer Changhee Kang thinks his AD projection system called Motion Graphic might keep commuters more entertained. The large screens show of all things – birds. Not pretty blue jays or cute parakeets but black birds. The sight of a swarm of black birds flying by as a train enters the station sure will wake sleepy commuters but I can’t help and think of the scene from Hitchcock’s The Birds. On the other hand all that real estate should give advertising agencies a kick in the creative noggin dreaming up the best way to sell you a Hyundai.

Dignity and pride in whatever you do, even if it’s cleaning the streets. Someone has to the dirty job of cleaning up your litter, and why not equip them with the perfect gear so that they can do a perfect job. With this contention in mind, we have Youn-il Lee designing the Green Fox Street Cleaning Kit for the road sweepers of Seoul. However, it’s something that the street-sweepers from the world over can do with. A standard 100-liter bin with special care to the peripherals makes this an ideal design.

Features Include:

The dustpan is designed to be used as a lid for the container, thus covers the trash from getting wet when it rains.

The angle of the cart makes it easy for it to be pulled along, even on an uneven road.

The brooms and other equipments for cleaning fit snug into the body of the cart, making it easy to carry them.

The bag for recycling trash looks compact when it is not used, but it is made of trampoline, an elastic material, so that it can contain used bottles and cans for recycling.

Don’t worry you won’t fall in. This is the “Eco Sign” for you, a digital manhole cover that harnesses the rainwater to power it. Tap a foot left or right and it gives you instant info on the nearest train station or bus stop. Maps and signboards be damned! A multifunctional manhole with a rocking display…and all the thieves vying for it!

A carpool concept for a perfectly trusting world. That’s what this is. Our designers here, Gwang Hoon Lee, Chan Il Jung, have concocted a simple window-sticky device that displays statistics about the contents of the vehicle it inhabits. It shows availability, maximum number of passengers, destination, and ETD estimated time of departure. Sound just fine to you?

It’s also got sleepy Mondays mode (and every other day if you get sleepy) and a BRB system so people can know that you’ll be returning soon to your car.

I’m skeptical! But I will say that self-contained, solar-powered systems like this are an eye-opening bit of technology if they come around. I can see big things coming of this.
