Recession time over or not, you need to pull up your socks and work your butt to afford the sweet luxuries of life. The happy Brady Bunch here makes no bones of the fact that their Vivace26 Concept Speed Boat is only for the Haves; poor folks be damned! The two-seater high-speed luxury vessel, boasts of specs that take into account technology advances that have already been discovered and developed.

V12 TDI diesel engines from the Audi Rio Lemans Prototype and using Arneson surface drives as propulsion, the Vivace 26 can produce up to 650 horsepower and can touch speeds of 80+ knots. The Vivace 26 features a fully convertible top, joystick steering, steering, OLED display screens and hull stabilizers.

A unique feature in the design is the hull, which has Stabilizers to channel the water from the bow to the stern. This allows the boat to “grab” onto the water when traveling at high speeds.

The lighthearted comparison of this lamp “After Dinner” to a snake that’s just eaten. There’s two kinds, After Dinner and After Lunch. Can you guess which is which? Not for sitting on.

Made to be versatile. The After Dinner and After Lunch both use fluorescent energy-saving bulbs. Small amounts of light and heat emit from this lamp, allowing for many locations of placement.

Pratt, in a crazy scheme to promote its students, alumni and faculty, recently outfitted two Brooklyn condos on the corner of 3rd and Bond Street with every manner of design paraphernalia, invited a bunch of people and put up an open bar. Color me there. Drawing on past and present Pratt faculty and students like Eva Zeisel and Tucker Viemeister, the spaces came alive with conscious, inventive, often green, always cool design.

The space of the upper apartment above uses the Dual Height Bench from David Zachary as a delightfully geometric centerpiece surrounded by a one-of-a-kind lounge from Eva Zeisel as well as cardboard chairs from CardboardDesign. In a similar nod to cardboard, the winerack from Anthony Caradonna and Pratt architecture students (below) will contrast nicely with your expensive wine and if the recycled cardboard doesn’t assuage your eco-guilt, its alcoholic contents surely will.

One of my personal favorites, the Array Series from Pratt alumnus Jason Pfaeffle (above), will appeal to any former K’nex fans who can’t resist taking apart their furniture and putting it back together as they like. Evoking similar focus on user interaction, the Rosebud Felt Bowl from alumnus Diane Ruengsorn below has the user snap the bowl together using a magnets embedded in a single piece of industrial felt.

Also displaying a selection of fine art from the school, the Laser Bed Prints (above) were captured from the Architecture department’s often used laser cutting machine by Pratt professor Mark Parsons and transferred to Homasote, rendering otherwise discarded scraps into something beautiful. Using the same laser cutting process, Anthony Caradonna cut away the disarming lamp shades (below) which, standing erect by their own cylindrical structure, are simply placed over a bare lightbulb.

Finally, seeing Pratt alum Harry Allen’s C’mere Hand Hook in person, holding a Timex watch from Evo Design, confirms every suspicion I had, it is indeed as creepy in person as it is on the ‘tubes. If anyone in the Brooklyn area has an interest in the condo’s and between 300 and 900 large burning a hole in their pocket, drop by Third and Bond, for those less filthy rich I would suggest the newly opened Yanko Store.

What in the world is that. Is that a boat? Is that a flying dirigible? Nay! It’s a moth! A moth is a kind of small, FAST, single-handed sailboat made for racing. Originated some time in the early 1900’s in North Carolina, the classic Moth can be any number of things: skiff, pram, scow, dinghy, basically anything within the restrictions of 75lbs, 72 Sw Fr sail area, and a maximum beam of 60 inches. What David Valham has done here is to make a Moth into a superior flying machine that’s riding on the edge of boatness, appearing to nearly take off!

Now, modern Moth boats look very similar to this Valham design, with the exception of a few factors: while the usual Moth has a couple of “wings” for the pilot to sit on, the Valham design turns these into actual wings, adding to the balance of the boat, adding to the speed. Furthermore, there’s a bunch of littler additions that make this lovely boat a Moth to behold:

Flexible Wing Mast

Lighter Beem Shape

Ergonomic Sitting Area (this is the wings)

Angle of Attack Indicator (rudder)

Rigged Handles for Easier Transport

Dihedral Angle on the Front

Higher Lifting Point

Double Wands on the Front

Now take a look at this bad boy, and tell me if you’d dare drive it. Part of the fun of this sport is the skill involved in keeping the boat upright. Learning how to run one of these splendid looking insects involves a lot of crashing and swimming. But! Once you’re up, you’re OFF!

Designer: David Valham

Somebody pass me a helmut and a time travel ship because if this is what Harley bikes look like in 10 years, I’m so there. Designer Miguel Cotto pays homage to the big road hogs by keeping the large 883cc engine, complete with high revs and roars. The similarities end there. The design is almost tron-like in execution. Check out the wheel hubs. They’re actually giant bearings. I do see glimpses of Harley DNA in the center chassis but seriously, can you image any road warriors riding this?

Let’s pretend for a moment that you live in the same state I do. Not the same state of mind, but the same physical location in the United States of America. I live in Minnesota. It is here on this ring of Earth that we have four very distinct seasons. For at least 2 of these seasons, we’ve got no use for a coat rack.* What does the rack look like then when you have no need for it?

What does the rack look like? Well! Funny you should ask. It looks so very nice, because it is the “Symbol” designed by none other than a mister David Scott. This rack is made to take hold of those months when the coat rack’s function is nil. It’s just so pretty on it’s own. But then of course it’s got Winter mode as well. 36″ wide, holds 75 pounds, and is made in monochrome aluminum or white with anodized colors.

*Unless you’re a fancy fellow or lady and need a place to hang your hat. And sometimes people put their shoes on there if they’ve been through a puddle. Dry time!

Easy Living Washing Machine was one of the French submissions at this year’s James Dyson Awards. The concept offers a solution for those seeking to do their laundry individually. Meaning, they don’t want to wait for the rest of the folks in their home to dump in their smellies! The system comprises of a single wall unit with framework to hook up the individual pods. It uses steam as a medium for cleaning and can wash small quantities at a time.

A space saving concept, the Easy Living wall unit can latch on 3 or max 4 tubs at a time. Since the quantity of clothes is less the cycle also runs for a shorter duration. My only worry is stubborn stains and their effective cleaning by steam. Because space, size, water and eco-friendly-dynamics can be squabbled over later, it’s just the question about a greasy stain!

What’s got two bald tires, runs on electricity, and is red and black all over? ZEVS! An elegant futuristic electric motorbike by three fellows, one of whom we’ve had up on Yanko before: Bernhard Ranner. Look and see, see and judge weather this bike performs to your aesthetic and atta-glance logistics standards if you dare.

The aim of this motorcycle, as stated in it’s outline, is thus:

“The first electric motorcycle for the real biker.” Designs for “real men”, dusty roads, in the spirit of Harley Davidson, Custom Chopper culture and the good old Route 66 romance.

Now I’m gonna always be the first to say “real men” is sort of an oxymoron where I come from, but let’s go on from there. Given the lack of statistics and logistical data we’ve been give, take this bike apart: will it be safe to have that seat in that sort of proximity to the back tire? Where will the left leg go? Will the red and blackness be outlawed like the Air Jordan Ones?

All these questions may also pale in comparison to the wildness of the design. These things often happen. Write on up! Take a crack at the keyboard. Will it blend?

Designer: Bernhard Ranner, Anders August Kittilsen, and Rudolf Stefanich

That’s all you need for the most naturally ninja-tastic backpack you’re ever gonna own. Straight from Shenkar College of engineering and design in Tel Aviv, Israel, here’s Davidi Galid’s “Meiosis.” Three dimensional polygons galore in a grid system that screams naturalistic and it’s probably really really safe on the inside.

I don’t often do this, but this designer, Davidi Galid, has such a way with words that I’ve just got to quote him word-for-word:

The backpack is the development of a new way of assembly that utilizes the physical attributes of the materials from which it is made. It is constructed of a three-dimensional polygon system, which is the result of released tensions and convergence of the material.

While the backpack parts are in that state, the bag gets its exterior shape, and remains so due to geometric locks as a result of the shrink. The relationship between the parts enables the opening and closing of the backpack, and determines its design and unique shape.

I wish each pack could be form-fitted perfectly to the wearer. I’ve always wanted my own shell. It seemed to me unfair that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had these really useful shells that they could store things in when I was a kid – then I realized that they probably couldn’t do that.

But now you can!

Designer: Davidi Galid
