Better Bandaging
The AmoeBAND is a bionic concept for band aid. The design features strategic cut-outs so that you can shape it to fit fingers in such a way that it is easy to bend them and not disrupt the bandage. It even features an intelligent dressing material allows you to regularly check wounds from the outside, without upsetting the healing process. Since the bandage material used exudes a leather-like feel, availability in different skin-tones helps it blend in, without overly highlighting the injury.
As the designers explain, “According to research, the when an infection of a wound is detected, the pH value is between 6.5 and 8.5. AmoeBAND’s indicator cross turns purple, alerting the user needs to change it immediately.”
Even the packaging has been redesigned to a matchbox style and even includes Braille instructions!
AmoeBAND is a 2012 IDEA Award Finalist.

You made a point to mention braille on the box. Is there a tactile equivalent to the bandage turning purple for blind people to know when to replace the bandage?

Is it latex free?

Great idea! Also great to have different shades for different skin colours.
However, the map displaying the shades really needs to be gotten rid of.
It comes across quite racist. The map displays multiple assumptions that are just no longer true. It assumes that no one has immigrated. It simply fits stereotypes. It is really backwards. For example darker skinned people living only in Africa and South America demonstrated no immigration. Yet Australia is displayed as having only lighter skinned people completely disregarding the existence of Indigenous people before the arrival of the British. The map is completely wrong and there is no need for it as continents and countries became multicultural a very long time ago. I really hope the map does not get used in pitching the concept or its advertising.
