Registrations for the 2012 iF DESIGN TALENTS (previously iF concept design) is open and the forum is looking for talented designers like you! The good news is that the competition is open to all design students and universities. The double whammy is that winners get to partake a part of the EUR 30,000 prize money! Empty Memory is an elegant jewelry collection that works as USB memory sticks! Delightful designs crafted by Yoo-Kyung Shin & Hanhsi Chen, each stick is a response to their questions, “what will happen if the technology becomes invisible.” The collection comes with two different designs – Structure and Transparency, both indicating that you can fill ‘em up with your own memories!

The Sketcher concept is a piece of innovation that I think all my designer friends will want to try. It is a tablet designed specifically for illustrators and designers looking for the best drawing experience. The current crop of tablets supports graphic software, but they lack accuracy and pressure sensitivity. Banking on Wacom’s glory, this concept hopes to give designers a real digital sketchpad that is surreal to use.

Automotive enthusiast Marko Petrovic’s unusual timepiece takes inspiration from and follows the design language of Lamborghini’s ultramodern hypercar, the Aventador. The Avenger watch transfers the same ultramodern aesthetic, signature black and orange of the Aventador, and complex engineering into a vertical tourbillion presented much in the same way as the car’s engine and transparent cover. It’s loud… real loud.

Sculptural sidewalk element by day and super-efficient streetlamp by night, the Windtulip is a great example of one of the many changes we can make in our public areas in order to reach environmental sustainability. Harnessing the power of the wind, compact turbines generate and transmit energy from transformer to battery before the lamp’s light-sensors activate the LED.

Vladimir Nikolic’s compact 12.1 megapixel digicam was designed to take the guesswork out of choosing the right shooting mode. The camera features an iAuto mode that automatically adjusts settings for the best pictures in almost any environment. The slender design is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand but powerful enough to capture star quality images with superb contrast and clarity down to the finest detail.

The Water Absorbent Coaster convincingly fools guests into thinking they shattered your coaster! This eco-friendly water absorbent coaster is crafted from concrete and non-toxic recycled materials to give it that green edge. With a typical beach theme of Spiral Shell, Princess Shell, Empty Bottle, and Footprint; my pick is the Dry Land for the most obvious reasons! Let’s play the prank NOW!

d’Light is an expandable tube light made from heat resistant tempered silicone material and LEDs. The idea is to have a safer tube light that is easy to install. Hence with this babe, you need to hook it to one end and then just expand the length to the other side. A very radical design for something that is always envisioned to be rigid! Simply Superb!

It’s not the first time you heard us warn you about the repercussions of sitting on the computer for too long. Stiff back, sore wrists, numb legs….the list is endless! Looks to me that we all need a YoYo Mouse! This cute concept forces you to get up and do some Yo-Yo tricks to re-energize it because the battery drains out fast! Works best for me be, given that my wireless mouse runs out of battery ever so often!

There’s no ignoring the fact that single-use water bottles have a deadly impact on the environment, which is precisely why we love a good multi-use water bottle design. The GOBIE H20 bottle is the eco-friendly brainchild of designer Rusty Allen, and it has a number of qualities worth bragging about: 100% BPA free, 22 oz capacity, enhanced ergonomic body and mouthpiece, non-slip base, and best of all- a built in replaceable filter, a feature that tends to be left out of a lot of designs despite being super important to the user. Better yet, the filter works as water moves out rather than in, making the filtration process much faster.

It’s unfortunate that there’s a need for this at all, but I guess there’s also something to be said for a peaceful protest! This riot shield design provides multidirectional protection from incoming projectiles whether directly ahead or above. When counterattacks are necessary, nonlethal weapons like tasers & defense spray are built into the shield & can be operated by a triggered handle. The real goal here: providing a deepened sense of security to defense personnel in hopes that nervousness doesn’t escalate violence.

Only a handful of space tourists have actually made it to the outskirts of our planet, but with companies like Virgin Galactic already taking down payments on seats, it’s only a matter of time before the cosmos become a sought-after vacation destination (for those who can afford it, of course). This project aims to offer riders a quick trip where they can briefly experience zero-gravity and get a peek of our planet.
