Insect-Inspired Cement Mixer

The Orpela Tino self-loading cement mixer takes inspiration from the mud dauber wasp, which builds its home from a mixture of mud and digestive juices (yummy!). Like the wasp, the front of the machine with the loading shovel is strong and aggressive while the back area with the mixing drum mocks the form of the wasp’s water droplet shaped rear end. Articulated steering and hydraulic suspension also make this mixing monster ideal for use in rough-terrain areas where access is limited.

Cool Air and More

Although we are heading towards winter, let’s not forget the folks from Down Under who are gearing up for their summers. I think escape from heat and reality should be more than just Kool Aid and popsicles; it should be funky like the Water Wave Air Conditioner. It features ambient lighting with moods like stars and water, matching sound effects and cool breezy air to lower your temperature. Now that’s what soothing summers should be like!

Socket Pop for Energy Savings

Unplugging devices is the easiest way to conserve energy and we have seen many attempts in the past to enforce this. However none of them have been this cool and easy as the Eco-socket. Once you are done with using a device, the socket automatically detects lower energy consumption and kinda pops the plug for you! When you need to use it again, simply push in the plug and you are good to go! Energy saved and you didn’t even have to do a thing!

Everyday Solar Distiller

Designed to aid in providing safe drinking water for people in developing countries, Gabriele Diamanti’s Eliodomestico water distiller harnesses the sun’s power to produce up to 5 liters of drinking water daily. Eliodomestico is almost 3 times as efficient as traditional solar stills and functions without electricity or even much maintenance as it works autonomously during the day. Made from only terra-cotta and zinc-plated metal sheets, the design could also be produced or repaired by locals quite easily.

The Catapult Boy ring is unlike any other in that it actually has a secret use that isn’t immediately apparent! What looks like a simple ornamental ring is actually a clever device for shooting rubber bands “sling-shot style” at your friends. Just keep a pack of rubber bands handy and you’ll be popping everyone all day. The only thing to worry about… retaliation!

Multi-Use Wall Hanger

Gotta love this utilitarian design by Swedish design studio, Lagström Wiktorsson. The Leaf hanger set consists of five steel rings of different size that anchor to wall on one side, making it suitable for a variety of uses depending on which way the user anchors it. Position it upside down as a towel ring, or right-side-up as a coat hanger. Each piece in the set is laser cut from a single steel sheet, minimizing material waste. In powder-coated charcoal gray and white they’re as attractive as they are useful.

HumanForm is a an project by Nokia Design and Nokia Research Center and explores the promise of nanotechnology and emotional interactions in a dynamically flexible device that goes beyond being just another touch screen. It features voice communication where technology is invisible and intuition takes over!

The Right Shade of Autumn

Color Elite is device that aims to replace paper and fabric swatches that is used in the paint industry today. It is the combination of e-paper technology, a camera and the Internet. Together they combine to provide you the exact shade or colors you are looking for, and even help reduce the use of paper. The explanatory video shows us how easy it is to use this device to pick shades from everyday scenarios (like leaves) and match it to the e-swatches. Super convenient and awesome use of technology!

The Grasshopper

The Grasshopper

The motivation behind the El Tucura (The Grasshopper) trike was to give paraplegic users the opportunity to enjoy the thrill of off-road downhill mountain biking, promoting it as an integrated nationwide sport. A crank handle drive means hands are free for steering while accelerating and three 180mm disc brakes and a 250mm suspension give added control on those extreme downhills. I’d have no qualms about trading in my two-wheels for these three!

Coral Rasa aims to help scientists monitor & protect the coral reefs of the world, currently one of the least protected natural habitats with 60% being under imminent risk of collapse due to human pressures. The diver-delivered device incorporates a camera, water tester, hydrophone, & coral bleaching monitor into one central unit that becomes a part of the reef itself, providing invaluable information about changes to the marine environment while simultaneously bringing public awareness to the fragile situation.

I like it for its hygienic option, plus a person like me always carried my brand of instant fix on travels. This packaging can come handy as individual sachets to carry.

Too Many Sockets Make a Brick

Too Many Sockets Make a Brick

Socket Like Brick allows you to configure and create a modular multi tap as per convenience. Extend or remove modules safely, moreover accommodate the different sized plugs with ease. It basically provides a good solution to the managing devices; my only fear is that people shouldn’t go overboard with the configurations. Maybe if one of the modules can be a circuit breaker that indicates overload. What do you think?
