Looking As Loud As It Is

The Levitating Superconductor Speakers by James Coleman has got to be one of the coolest I’ve seen! The concept works by housing a superconducting element inside a transducer, which can be suspended in a superdiamagnetic field by an electromagnet. Changing the electromagnetic field strength will cause the transducer to oscillate, which will impart sound directly into the air. Crossing my fingers that superconducting technology advances quickly because I want both the black/gold and blue/silver versions!

KwickScreen Wins 2011 James Dyson Award

A winner of the 2011 James Dyson Award, this incredibly useful design called the KwickScreen is already finding its place in hospitals around the world. Inspired by the tongue of a frog, the retractable, portable screen uses innovative fiberglass tubes (originally designed for use in space) to bring flexibility to care environments, allowing better space management while helping prevent infection and providing added privacy.

Dog Walker’s Best Friend!

The BBone’ Strap is a very clever integration of dog leash and disposable poop bags. The handle of the strap holds rolled up bags that can be easily snapped out for poop-scoops. A very thoughtful design considering the fact that all you need to walk the dog is held in one hand!

Cook The Perfect Rare

I don’t cook meat so I really don’t have this perception of cooking with timer and temperature. But for those of you who do, the Electrolux Slice Concept makes perfect sense. This cooking tool is a combination of a sensor and timer that monitors food as it cooks. As the meat turns from raw to rare the sensor changes color, indicating that the desired temperature has been reached. I love the sleek finish given to the overall device, very minimalistic and clean.

The Mother of Split!

I thought my ultimate phone fantasy ended with Seunghan Song’s Window Phone Concept. I was wrong; Space 3 is my latest hitch. The device takes the idea of a transparent touchphone one step forward with its twin splitting transparent displays! Although the designers focus only on the navigational aspects, I think the interaction can be explored further to involve videos, photographs or even surfing the Internet! Totally rad!

Unmanned Flight of Fantasy

The D.F.O is an unmanned helicopter to spray meds or pesticides on farm produce. For an industry where airplanes do the bidding, RC Unmanned choppers sounds too Star Wars-ish, nonetheless a fathomable concept. It makes me wonder if it will be the farmer or his son who takes on this job. Hell, I’ll do it for free mister…. Just gimme the darn controls!

Fusioon And The Tea Bag Story

Coming from a country where tea is not so much of a ceremonial process but just a necessity of life, concepts involving the right amount of steeping and fussing amuse me no end. Adding to my list of fascinating tea stories is the Fusioon Spoon Concept, where an appropriate niche holds the green teabag for centralized dipping, so that it receives an equal amount of water from all sides. The clever design also takes care of the used bag efficiently. Maybe it’s time I acquired some international tea drinking skills, or maybe I should just stick to instant coffee!

Age of the Notebook Kitchen?

The Electrolux Mobile Kitchen Concept combines three basics of modern-day kitchens: a 4-tier induction cooking element, an efficient cutting board and a touchscreen computer for your recipes, downloads and nutrition facts. The placement of the three as a tribute to the laptop makes it a truly portable design. My only concern is the functional relationship between the three. Although the renders make the placement of pots, chopping board and the tablet look synchronistic, but in reality will they hold good? Oil squirts, fumes! Nevertheless, as a camper or travel companion, it fits the bill!

Concept X is a conceptual bracelet designed to create jewelry that mixes sensual organic forms with the strength of industrial, almost medical silhouettes. Its curvilinear body and undulating elements form a cincture-like cast – as if it naturally evolved there. The designers believe the evolutionary organic image fits well into modern life. They describe their project as “the re-definition of the spatial order of  jewelry”.

Chair in a Chair

Armchair “IN” isn’t the first of dual-combi chairs. In fact I’ve seen a handful of variations this past year but this one seems to nicely hit a balance between aesthetic duality and versatility. Playing with the idea of “internal content”, you can pull out the core and use it as a foot rest. Pull it out slightly to the side and you have an instant side table with convenient storage opportunities for CD’s (so 90′s) and magazines on the opposite side.
