Sustainable Cycle

Sustainable Cycle

Featured in the top 20 for the 2011 International Bicycle Design Competition, the Greencycle 2 provides more than just basic transportation between point A and point B; it provides an environmentally sustainable, meaningful and overall beneficial solution to poorer countries. A series of G2s were created in the design process with core parts made from renewable resources such as bamboo, which is widely available in many 3rd world countries.

Ceramic Bio-Fireplace

Ceramic Bio-Fireplace

Inspired by natural peculiarities and movement of the flame itself, the Essence of Flame series of bio-fireplaces transform an industrial fireplace into a visually rich creation, even when it isn’t burning. Designed to fit industrial fireplaces, the simple rings are made of high refractory clay that resists frequent heat. More decoration than primary heat source, and with a variety of styles, each is sure to conjure a relaxed mood in any room.

Half-sized Sheets of Toilet Paper

Half-sized Sheets of Toilet Paper

I’m a big fan of paper towels perforated into smaller sizes because not every mess demands a giant square sheet but can toilet paper benefit from the same design? HowGee looks like every other roll of toilet paper but the sheets are perforated at half-sizes. Ultimately the designers hope by letting you choose how much to use, you’ll save paper. So let’s think about what we use toilet paper for because lets be frank, not every “mess” in the bathroom demands a full-size sheet right? RIGHT?

The Ultimate Sled

The Ultimate Sled

Steil is a conceptual sled with easy-carry straps designed for multiple sitting positions. Just check out the pictures after the jump. Doesn’t the guy look like he’s having fun? Oooh! I got a story. Gather ’round kids. When I was 9, I woke up to snow falling in Texas (yes it snows in Texas). I grabbed my sled and attempted to glide on a sheet of ice in the driveway. Needless to say, I ended up bruised and dented the family car. From then on I decided snow was no longer my friend and blamed my imagery friend “Matt” for the fiasco.

Mixing Bar with Dumb!

Mixing Bar with Dumb!

I’m all for tidy exercise equipment at home or at work and this Bar&Dumbbell fits the bill right. In one clever re-design shift of merging designs, two heavy-duty gym equipments get an aesthetic new avatar and occupy much lesser space. Very clever!

Modulating The iPhone Sound

Modulating The iPhone Sound

The Air Module is a very simple speaker design that requires no power supply! Yea, you got that right! It has a rubber brake, wood and ceramic system that allows it to modulate sound. Have a look at the pictures inside and you will know what I mean. So basically the module just envelops your iPhone (or any other device) and pipes out the music in rhythm. Cool!

Doodle Masterpiece

Doodle Masterpiece

The Masterpiece Pad is a great take on the doodle pad that features a variety of whimsical frames that instantly give each piece a sense of permanence, encouraging the drawer to keep their work of art. Fold the pre-cut flaps, insert the tabs that hold it together and voila- you’ve got your own doodle masterpiece!

Cleaning Cuttlefish Style

Cleaning Cuttlefish Style

To help preserve wildlife and the environment, the Oceanic Cleaning System uses solar power and automated satellite units to seek out and capture plastic particles and man-made waste. Inspired by cuttlefish, the satellites use lateral fins to maneuver through the water, collecting plastic and other debris. After waste is collected, the units navigate back to the base where it is deposited and sorted for recycling.

DIY, FLat-pack Bamboo and Glass

DIY, FLat-pack Bamboo and Glass

Gotta love this simple, flat-pack, DIY design by designer Tamara Petrovic. The Star Table is the result of a study in form triangulation and features light frame construction that consists of 4 thin planes that interlock to form a lightweight, strong and stable base.

Scanning Watch

Scanning Watch

Inspired by scanning devices for scanning targets in sci-fi movies, the Sonar Watch has three themes – blue for sonar, green for radar, and red for a scanner interface. The time is shown as three targets which are lit up. By pressing a button, a radar/sonar/scanner animation will play. The dots represent the hour, minutes and seconds. Cool, novel design. Definitely something I could see Tokyoflash selling.

Tape on USB

Tape on USB

I’m a sucker for retro cassette tape concepts and they always take me back in time. So check this Player & Tape Concept, which features a portable music player that can dock 3 USB sticks at a time. It comes with a mock USB cassette tape that can store music and can be shared with friends. Just like how you used to make mix-tapes and compile romantic love songs! Ah, those were the days…
