Thanks for following our live feeds on Facebook & Twitter on July 4th as we reported directly from the 2011 red dot product design awards ceremony and Designers’ Night after party in Essen, Germany. We had a blast this year and hope you did too! Ah, now what other juicy info can we give you about this year’s red dot awards!?
Solar power and waste disposal is always a winning combination with the green brigade, but unlike some loft concepts, the City Context is a very practical and utilitarian design. It’s the combo of solar powered streetlamps with color-coded dustbins within the shaft of the lamp. Icons on the bin indicate its use and help in garbage segregation in its first level itself.

I am totally smitten by this simple exploration of basic shapes like rectangle, cylinder and hole. The resulting coffee machine is a stunning design that is bare-minimal and intuitive. The only thing different is the operations; the brew is made by pressing the cylinder inside. Hope Nespresso likes the concept too!

The Dentris mobile dental treatment system ensures that bed-ridden patients & others unable to visit the clinic are able to receive the dental treatment they need by providing a way for dentists to bring care to their patients’ homes. The complete dentist station is packed into a lightweight, robust case that includes all the necessary tools for cleanings, fillings, & other operations. Not just for immobile patients, Dentris also offers a solution to those who have a phobia of the dentist’s office. Sign me up!

The Moosh Watch is a response to the global decline in children’s physical activity & the increase in the percentage of overweight and obese children worldwide. The solution aims to encourage exercise & interaction by providing a way for kids to reflect on daily activities by simply by doing what they do best- playing. The watch measures the type, duration, & other members involved in an activity & links this information to a social networking site where they earn badges based & can compare their scores.

Totally intrigued by the Hydralamp. It has a unique cooling system that extends the LED bulb lifetime to 50,000 hours. The lamp is also an energy saver. It produces the same luminous power as a 20W halogen bulb but consumes only 4W. The lamp casing is made of anodized aluminum and tempered glass totalling 900mm high.

Considering the fact that iPhone 5 isn’t out as yet, the iPhone 6 rumors just make me smirk at our Apple obsession! In case you haven’t heard, 6 is rumored to have inductive charging, sleek compact body and 3.7” screen, amongst other things. So tell me Antoine Brieux, do you think your vision of the 5, sans LED Panel, stereo jack moved to the top of the phone, single aluminum anodized body with several color options, hold a candle to these rumors? Get back to the drawing board my man, and let’s see what iPhone 6 looks to you!

The only time I had an urge to splurge on Band-Aid was when I came across Cynthia Rowley’s blinged brigade called Dress-Up Band-Aid. No doubt the price tab for crystal and sequins encrusted plaster hurts more than the wound. So I reckon I’m going to please myself with the Smile Band Aid instead. Not rocket science, but cute as a button, it’s the kinda of emoticon I’d rather settle with, to ease my pain!

The Furrow is a simple intuitive design for the socket plate that has furrows in either horizontal or diagonal positioning. These positions correspond with the orientation of the plug-socket. It comes handy for those spots where the plugs are far from reach (like beneath your desk) or below the eye-level. Ah, the woman in the picture says it all!

This MA degree project at the Royal College of Art, MONOFORM addresses the automotive industry’s lack of cultural relevance. It stands as a point of view towards progressive mobility experiences that connect with the emerging philosophies of the 21st century and speaks directly to those who feel alienated by the conservative symbolism applied in modern automotive design.

Now here is a curious idea, what we have is the plastic screw-on cap of a bottle and in that cap is the sealing strip as well. When you rip put the seal, it unfurls to open up as a straw. Now I don’t know how practical this design can get, but I think it can build on to bigger, better things. It’s not the first time we are seeing lids being used as alternate functional tools. If we put our heads together, I’m sure this can be an awesome practical design.

As you can see that the Keyboard “ABC” has a pretty glossy finish and looks like a total glam-doll! Let’s just dive into the USP; it sports a complete touch surface and can be configured to any language with customized keys. What’s really cool is that you can change the keyboard color at whim and it works well for the left-handers too. It seems to be an LCD screen for the keyboard, with built-in memory for storing files. Now that is a good feature to have. My only two grouse: saving the board from fingerprints and if it can have the Apple keyboard-esque tilt.

We dabbled with Livestream on our YD Facebook and it was so much of chaotic fun! If we had such a good time just testing it out, imagine doing it on a regular basis and that too via a camcorder. The story gets better, because with the OnAir Camcorder you can record and/or live stream your videos in real time to share with friends and family using social accounts or plain old video channels. Not only do you get to record what’s in front of the camera, you get to record yourself (the camcorder user) simultaneously.
