If you’ve been lucky enough to visit Japan and see the majestic mount Fuji, then you understand why designers like Yuchen Liu are inspired by it. It’s perpetually surrounded by mist and that’s when it clicked for Yuchen Liu. The Fujisan Humidifer is an homage to mountain – purifies the air and puts moisture back into it. Beautiful, honest design.

This twist (literally) on the chair, the brainchild of designer Markus Johansson, challenges the straight, rigid, and traditional forms of the modernist aesthetic, presenting itself as a violent and chaotic swirl of solid wood frozen in time. Combining modern and age-old technique, NEST is constructed of a free form combination of round pegs that are bent and then drilled in a CNC milling machine for a precision fit. The pegs share an identical cut, making production easy and straightforward without sacrificing style.

It’s a strange thing that we’ll never fully experience what it’s like to see ourselves through someone else’s eyes. Seeing your reflection, or viewing photos of yourself is somehow different than how other people see you. Deception of Reflection by designer John Leung is a mirrored analogy of this phenomenon. The frame’s 3D honeycomb surface makes it appear as though the frame is magically reflected in an entirely different color, reminding the viewer that what is seen in the mirror is entirely subjective.

For the ultra-rich, available hobbies are as limitless as their bank accounts. Designer Timon Sager envisions the future elite class shedding their riding boots and leaving the exotic car garaged for something even more exhilarating: a purely recreational private jet. The AvA 02 Serafim has a fighter jet aesthetic with a more customized look. Shown here in red, it’s a natural choice for adrenaline junkies.

DV01 is a bicycle concept for people who want a bike to be a convenient means of transportation and a product with high aesthetic value. For many people a bicycle is a place to express personal style. It’s also a product that consists of many different components and parts, which all affect the overall impression. The focus of the project has been about finding a balance between those components. When form and function interact in a successful symbiosis, the product may last longer and loved by more people. Several unique features provide a superior developmentally appropriate environment for the patient, while simplifying procedures for the clinician. With pioneering new technologies for newborns and their caregivers, it simplifies equipment ergonomics to support nursing care.

EcoWash is your friendly dishwasher/dinner-set holder that you can take along on picnics and camping trips. Combining the components of a bucket of water, cleaning brush, suds and drying, this compact portable machine is ideal for the outdoors. The crank handle works the inner machinery to rotate the dish rack for cleaning purposes. Water is sourced through a tap or a pipe and is expelled with the grime through a special release slot.

After looking through several cases for my precious phone, I finally settled on a case that promised to save it from scratches and would bear the brunt if it slipped and fell. The case was hideous and it didn’t even save my phone when the inevitable happened. Shattered display and a broken heart later, I had written off all phone cases, till the CalypsoCase happened. It’s a case that doesn’t hide the phone under a body amour; in fact it celebrates the design genius with elegance. Looks like iPhone, BlackBerry, HTC and Samsung users are going to Calypso with me!

Besides chuckling every time I see a naked mannequin, I wonder, “where the heck does anyone have room to keep those awkward things?” Industrial design hot house, Arash and Kelly Studio, saw the potential for improvement, so they developed ZiPP, a flat pack, zip-able mannequin that provides a low cost, no bulk solution for displaying items. The bust, waist, & full length figures are made of lightweight, semitransparent polypropelene; perfect for trade shows, new launches, or retail window displays.

Who doesn’t remember makeshift telephones made of wire and cans? The Invoxicated interactive play sculpture is a bit like that, but a bit more complex, a lot cooler looking, and it actually works! Children can explore the playful qualities of sound by talking into one end of the sculpture to produce sound for the listener on the other end. By bending parts of the sculpture and pressing its various buttons, a multitude of sound effects can be achieved in real time.

It’s no surprise that designer Jason Falconer took 1st Place at this years PAL Robotics’ REEM-C design challenge. Being the editor of robot-blog PlasticPals, the designer naturally developed inspiration from various designs over time. Understanding the dos and don’ts of humanoid robot design, Falconer payed close attention to the approachability of the robot by smoothing out the face, emphasizing the eye area, and designing the overall proportions of the figure to be as similar to the human silhouette as possible.

Herman Miller recently launched a new section of their website called POV (point of view). The website includes stunning photography and exclusive video interviews with architects Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner, Kim Coleman, James Meyer, Jim Jennings and John Friedman. What a beautiful way to check out these inspired spaces. I may have to visit them all. There’s also a contest to win Julius Shulman’s “Modernism Rediscovered”- a collection from the photographer’s personal archives.

Adrian Castro originally conceived the MoonWatch in 2004 and decided to update it for 2011 using new materials and tech. Made of high-strength plastic, lacquered in different colors and equipped with an LED screen that displays time via numeric codes and digital hands. Other variations include titanium, gel silicone, leather and carbon fiber straps. The unique shape of the MoonWatch is supposed to better fit the wrist and the overall design is pretty unisex.
