Book Wrap

Book Wrap

The Scroll Bookshelf is one of the most basic ways of managing your books in a tidy fashion. A metal sheet covered with a plastic sleeve and two sturdy end-rolls is what its all about. Unfurl the sheet and stack em books! And look! The ends have secret chambers to hold pens and other trinkets. Cute!

Addicted to Information

Addicted to Information

What will the future of information technology look like? Sound like? Behave like? Designer Lukas Franciszkeiwicz envisions a minimal, shape sorter, toy-like instrument adapted for the social networking revolution that also makes a profound statement about our modern addiction to digital interaction & how computers already dictate our decisions. Fusing mind & machine, Beta is one glimpse into how our future relationships might be with such technological concepts that may be able to predict our responses.

Subatomic Table

Subatomic Table

Inspired by quantum physics, the Quantum table is an interpretation of what the movement or path of subatomic particles might look like. The lacquered orange corian top is supported in sharp contrast by the turbulent flux of the hand formed steel wire base in powder-coated black.

The Apple Arrow

The Apple Arrow

The Feccia Mela wall-suspended dish by designers Andrea Maffezzoni and Nicola Loi makes for a great decorative way to put your fruit on display. Made of corian or aluminum this playful design has a humorous quaity and is sure to be a conversation starter. Kinda reminds me of William Tell!

Alarm Everywhere

Alarm Everywhere

The Cicadidae Click is an interesting concept. It functions as a traditional alarm clock named after one of the most annoying families of insects (IMHO), but has a tiny bluetooth dongle with a 3.5 mini jack. Plug it into anything with a 3.5 mm plug with speakers and you could get some really amplified sound when it goes off. Talk about being JOLTED awake! Would anyone use anything like this?.

Clean Babies

Clean Babies

The Gloob project is a children’s bathtub that fits in perfectly with today’s bathrooms and can be used in a variety of ways. Use it as a traditional tub and changing table. Stand it on its pedestal or go low and sit it on the floor. I love the design but the stand does look like it could wobble. BTW, clean babies are the best kind. Just sayin’.

Compact Cooking

Compact Cooking

Dreaming of a decent kitchen in student quarters is like an irrational fantasy! Addressing this need to be able to whip up a decent meal, even though you lack the space, is this Cookease. It is a compact integrated cooking system, which contains a heater and 2 bowls. The heater works on magnetic induction and is made from silicone, while the bowls are color coated stainless steel. Much like a compact lunchbox, I’d much rather have a small setup than none.

Untangled Tangles

Untangled Tangles

The easy way out to combing my daughter’s hair is to simply snip it short. But the girl likes her lustrous mane long and in two tight braids for school! The 2way comb should end my struggle for taming her tangles. It allows the user to clasp and comb entangled hair, using several locking positions. Easy on the wrist and made from wood, this comb is simply awesome!

Mass Production Gets Personal

Mass Production Gets Personal

Mass manufacturing doesn’t mean that products must sacrifice variation & individuality. Focusing on this concept, designer Thomas Hunt developed Mea, a line of ceramic tableware that allows users to personalize individual pieces through the use of ceramic additive manufacturing. Upon ordering, users simply input the date, time, location, & a personalized message which is then codified in an attractive & unique pattern onto the exterior of the object. An outstanding gift idea that won’t be soon forgotten.

Sustainable Mercedes Roadster

Sustainable Mercedes Roadster

Combine modern power with classic Mercedes styling reminiscent of the 1930s Silver Arrow and you’ve got this dynamic electric concept sports car, the latest from designer Ali Khanzadi. The lightweight modern roadster’s body is formed using a composite of recycled plastic & carbon fiber & the chassis a composite of carbon fiber & aluminum. Lacking traditional brakes, it utilizes the same electricity & magnetic system in braking that is used to propel the vehicle.

Sharp Dressed Man, ShirtsMyWay Contest

Sharp Dressed Man, ShirtsMyWay Contest

One of the most commonly asked questions regard my advice to new, fresh faced, dough-eyed designers. INVEST in a tailored dress shirt! It’s an ironic piece of menswear because it’s conformist yet can set you apart from a sea of ubiquity, plus there’s nothing sharper than a man with a custom tailored shirt. We’ve teamed up with ShirtsMyWay to give one $200 gift certificate to use on their site. To enter, go to ShirtsMyWay, pick a fabric you like and leave it in comments here. We’ll announce the winner June 17. Open worldwide!

Top 25 Entries of Electrolux Design Lab 2011

Intelligent Mobility, Scandinavian Design Sensibilities and Existing Technologies were the key words for consideration while designing the Electrolux Design Lab entries for 2011. For booty of 5,000 Euros and six-months paid internship, thousands of designers set to the task of designing appliances that can be used at home and beyond. Looking at the shortlisted 25 entries it’s really hard to predict which one will wear the crown. Last year’s winner Peter Alwin pitched the bar up high with his Snail Concept; this year the competition gets tougher, so good luck designers!
