Located in the heart of Manhattan’s waterfront Battery Park sits the recently completed New Amsterdam Plein & Pavilion, a $2.3 million gift from the Kingdom of the Netherlands to New York City in honor of their shared values of innovation, creativity, diversity, & progress. The structure will be a major transportation hub, serving over 150,000 visitors & residents with visitor information & locally grown food at one of Lower Manhattan’s newest & most dynamic cultural gateways.

Expanding Recreational Diving

This underwater system by designer Emil Orman aims to make scuba diving a safe & tangible reality for those who suffer from paraplegia. The concept was developed by working hand-in-hand with disabled divers, conducting full-scale diving exhibitions, & carrying out mock-up tests. Buoyancy and body trim can be adjusted via the chest mounted control to assist the user into a horizontal, vertical, or angular position, increasing the freedom of movement & enhancing the overall experience.

This Vacuum Sucks… in a Good Way!

I’ll be the first to admit that my cleaning lady, Claudia, is my best friend. Call me lazy, but one of the reasons is that I (& my dog) despise the cumbersome, loud, rolling vacuum that hides in my storage. Now, if vacuuming were as easy, cute, & just plain fun to use as the Magic Glove then I just might have a change of heart. This miniature sized aspirator is powered by a rechargeable battery & is able to brush & vacuum simultaneously, cleaning & dusting all while attached to your hand. Move over Claudia!

All of the products are unique and most are sustainably produced. The online concept was set up by Emma Brocklesby; an undergraduate, who worried about how she and other undergraduates, could work in design if employment opportunities remained scarce. Is there space for old school guises in the digital revolution? I think there is, which is why steampunk is alive. Settling the Digital v/s Mechanical dispute with his Rotary Mechanical Smartphone, designer Richard Clarkson gives us a smartphone that is so very tangible that its aura speaks for itself! Stalling the ‘digital-take-over’, the phone features two interchangeable brass dials, a true rotary dial and a button dial. WHats really clever is that the act of changing these is inspired from changing the lenses on a camera!

Power Knowledge of Cells

My father never trashes any old batteries because he knows that combined with another used one, a few weeks later, it can juice up the wall clock any such device. I know its not recommended, but bottom line is that people DO it! So if you can’t break them, may as well join them; provide them with a Digital Measuring Paper. It features soft OLED screen and paper-thin IC that displays the amount of backup juice in a cell. At least two like-powered batteries can be used together more effectively.

Precise Orientation

One of the biggest advantages of a laptop is its portability feature. Using this as its premise, here is a very sleek version of how we should be really using a digital notebook. Ironic that it’s a leaf out of the journal kind, the Anderson’s main USP is the practical way of handling the book. Dual hinge system makes it possible to use the notebook in portrait and landscape mode. Realistic and do-able, I’d like one Anderson just for me!

Kinetic Coffee Table

Inspired by the work of kinetic sculptors Theo Jansen & Reuben Margolin, the Kanagawa Coffee Table is the result of a merge between the warm aesthetic of wood and cold feel of mechanics. The table is constructed of 298 pieces of laser cut Baltic Birch plywood, oak dowels, rubber “o” rings, and conduit that are set into an elegant & complex wave motion with a turn of the hand crank. The clear glass top makes for the perfect window to view the inner workings & measures at 50″x30″, offering plenty of usable space.

Hidden Vacuum

Raise your hand if you think most vacuums and trash cans are ugly! I know I do. Here is yet another unorthodox but clever vacuum design, this time from designer Jocelyn Sie. The Vacbin (if you didn’t gather from the name) is a waste bin/vacuum combination for those who don’t like the obvious look of the conventional trash can and rolling vacuum, which can sometimes be a real eyesore. Hidden within the inconspicuous body of the bin is a hand held vacuum that easily stores and releases for quick tidying up.

One Go-Kart 2 Go Please

Launch of a whole new electric go kart that can fold up and fit in the back of your car. Designed and engineered to look and feel like a formula one car, this go-kart only weighs 65 pounds. The entire chassis and body work are made from carbon fiber, and lightweight lithium batteries power this racer to a top speed of 60 mph. The chassis is designed to fold up into a package of only 30” x 30” x 15,” this is achieved by quick disconnects of the rims and steering wheel and folding the chassis in half. DO WANT!

The Flow of Time

The Flow of Time

The Time Flows clock is an “interesting” clock because it’s haunting how the hours and minutes trail behind. Problem is, even with the animation (hit the jump), I still have no idea how to read it. Any ideas? Here’s what the designer said; “This clock lets us know the hour and the minute but all the unncessary things. There is a circle board in the middle. Only the 1/4 part of the whole is colored. The hour and minute hands do not exist. The only thing that turns is the circle board. Through that we can know the time.”

Water My Weight

Water My Weight

After its useful life, a weighing machine generates a lot of wasteful scrap that can be limited, if we revisit the design. An out-of-the-box solution is the Water Climb; a scale that uses water, a watertight bag and cylindrical marked glass tube. Using the laws of physics for its functioning, the project calls for an Archimedes moment and maybe some applause. My only worry is that the scale shouldn’t wobble too much under my heavy weight!
